The New ‘Garmin Forums’ Are Here — Old Links Will Not Work.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the NEW Landing Page for Garmin Forums.

If you follow the ‘Garmin Forums‘ you would have known that they have been DOWN for about a ‘week’ while they were being moved to a new — and supposedly better — platform.

They are up and running again.

However, only the TOP LEVEL ‘forums.garmin.com‘ URL is the same. So, if you had links to specific Forums, say the Fenix 5 Plus (as I did), they will NOT work. You will have to redo them — as I had to.

The Categories are a bit confusing. Why isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) under ‘Sports & Fitness’ — isn’t the Fenix 5 (Plus) Garmin’s premier sports watch?

Anywho … they are BACK.

I didn’t have time today to check them out. Just wanted to make sure they are back.

Hope this helps.

“Garmin VIP Club”, For Making UPGRADING Easier With Trade-Ins, By ‘Heart Rate Monitors USA’.

— just $9.99.

This BRILLIANT for folks like I who like the latest technology on our wrist. Essentially an easy, guaranteed UPGRADE path without having the hassle of trying to sell your current Garmin.

I signed up at once … at once. At $9.99 it was a no-brainer. Don’t tell them BUT, I would have paid MORE for this privilege! {Smile}

Amazon, in 2016 – 2017, had a trade-in program. I used in a bunch of times to keep up with my need to change cameras. Now that they don’t have that, I am delighted that HRM USA has stepped into the breach.

The program, alas, is NOT — I repeat ‘NOT’ — retroactive; i.e., it does NOT apply to Garmins we already have. Only to those we purchase after we become members. That is a bummer. That means you still have to ‘finance’ your next Garmin upgrade on your own.

But, do not wait. Sign Up.

Yes, this means you end up being tied to HRM USA when it comes to buying your Garmins. From my experience that is not a bad thing. I have bought three Garmins from them so far — plus a Fitbit Ionic. So, I have no issues with that.

Well, I have done my duty and told you about this.

P.S., I saw it on my Facebook timeline last thing last night. So, in case you were wondering as to how I hear about this.

I will NOT have the time to peruse these. I will leave that to the experts and professionals.

Getting WordPress Post, With Image, To Appear, With Image, On Facebook.

by Anura Guruge

Basically achieving this
between WordPress and Facebook.

I want my WordPress posts, which invariably have an image,
to appear on Facebook, with the SAME image, and a built-in, clickable link.

Like this.

fbdebug00

Just trying to paste the link to Facebook results in unpredictable results.

Often the image is NOT displayed or they display the WRONG image without you getting the option to select the right one.

It appears that you can fix it by using a Facebook developer tool. Use this link to get it. Now book mark it and keep it.

You are going to access that Facebook tool (called the ‘Link Debugger’) each time you want to post a link. A bit of an hassle, no doubt, BUT you will get the results you want. I have been successfully using it since yesterday and have done about 10 posts — all ‘OK’, first time.

This is the step-by-step process.

fbdebug1

This is what you will get when you access the above “Facebook Developer” link. Paste your link into the ‘show’ trench and hit “DEBUG”.

fbdebug2

You will get this screen. Hit “FETCH NEW INFORMATION”.

fbdebug3

You will next get this screen. You can IGNORE this screen! For real. Now copy the WordPress post link AGAIN and paste it into YOUR Facebook timeline STATUS ‘box’. Bingo. Bob’s your uncle.

Google Doodles For April Fool’s Day: Can You Spot The ‘Valid’ Doodle?

Google is noted for its brilliant April Fool’s Day pranks.

Last year they announced the extremely funny 8-bit Google Maps. Just Google for all their other pranks. Wikipedia even has an entry titled: “List of Google’s hoaxes and easter eggs” .

But google has been quite circumspect when it comes to Google Doodles for April 1, i.e., April Fool’s Day. Here are three from 2009, 2010 and 2012. There wasn’t one for 2011.

Are they all pranks?

No. Only one is a bona fide joke. Can you tell which one that is?

One relies on some poetic license. Can you spot that one.

The other is truly legit, though it is very clever.

Никола́й Васи́льевич Го́голь with his trademark nose. But, he wasn’t born on April 1. Neither did he die on April 1. He was a ‘March’ man: was born and died in March.

Yes, the 2010, ‘Topeka‘ renaming was a ‘joke‘, though rather tame and obvious. Topeka, Kansas, more of less forced Google’s hand by making an official announcement, covered by the media, on March 1, 2010, that they were renaming Topeka, Kansas, ‘Google’, Kansas for a month. So, Google retaliates, so to speak. But it was very obvious.

Nikolai Gogol is real! Honest. He was Russian and only those that truly have an appreciation of world literature would have heard of him. That Google found him was so cute. Bravo. But, they did take some poetic license, which to me, spoilt it. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (Никола́й Васи́льевич Го́голь) WAS NOT born on April 1, 1809! He was born March 31, 1809. And Google can’t claim that it was April 1 in the U.S. At best it would have been March 30 in the U.S. So that was cheating.

The ‘VLT‘, standing for ‘Very Large Telescope‘ is very real and it did indeed go public on April 1, 1999. And the names are correct too. So that one is legit, though I have issues with the graphic. The laser shown shooting out of the 4 telescopes is not a common occurrence. Yes, they do shoot a laser to determine atmospheric distortion so that computer software processing the captured images can compensate for it. This is called ‘Adaptive Optics’. Yes, it looks cool, but as an astronomy buff I worry that it creates the wrong impression and that kids, especially, might form this notion of telescopes that shoot lasers into the sky on a routine basis.

The VLT at sunset.

What appears at the Google Doodle archive … replete with Google provided write-up on Douglas Adams.

Adamsdoodledetailed

To say I am still a HUGE fan of Douglas would not capture my deep-seated, profound relationship with this AMAZING man.

He was beyond genius. A rare, alas fleeting, talent.

When the Doodle said ’61st birthday’ by heart skipped a beat.
He tragically died so young. Aged 49, in 2001. I was distressed.

We were contemporaneous and compatriots, though alas I never met him.
I became a ‘Hitchhiker’ with the 1981 BBC TV show. I have it on DVD.
Both my older kids got to love it and I think Devanee has seen it once.

I have read all his books and I am sure I have nearly all of them

I often use Hitchhiker phrases and most don’t have any idea what I am talking about.

Just recently I signed off an e-mail to my papal blog regulars with what I told them was a biblical reference:
Goodbye and Thanks for all the fish‘.

Thank YOU, Douglas. You were the Man.

Thank YOU, Google. You made my day.

The Equestrian High Jump Record, At 8.1′, That Has Stood For 64 Years Seems Incongruous To Me.

The record being set in Chile.

I have learned a lot of late by making a point to study Google Doodles.

I saw the above Chilean Colonel Alberto Larraguibel Morales (May 30, 1919 – April 12, 1995) Doodle on February 5, 2013 — the day after they produced a Doodle for Sri Lanka Independence Day.

I had no idea what they were talking about. Though I used to watch equestrian show jumping on TV, as all Brits are expected to do, I wasn’t familiar with the term ‘Puissance’. Maybe I did know it at one point but had forgotten it because I haven’t seen horse jumping on TV in the 29 years I have lived here (this time around).

Google has actually used the WRONG terminology. Puissance involves an upright fence. As you can see from the Doodle, Alberto Larraguibel was jumping over a sloped fence. That is the equestrian high jump competition ad it involves a single, sloping fence — the bottom half is hedge, the top made out of rails. So the Doodle is accurate in that respect.

Larraguibel (who at the time was a captain) broke the record for the the equestrian high jump, on February 5, 1949, at an official international event, in his native Chile.

He was riding quite a famous horse, chestnut stallion named ‘Huaso‘ (née ‘Faithful’).

They cleared, as officially ratified by the relevant sporting body, 8.1 feet (2.47 meters).

To beat the record somebody needs to jump 8.2 feet.

Same record jump, but head on. Does look quite high to me.

I like horses. Always have. I have done a very small amount of riding. I have watched Devanee taking riding lessons. But, I don’t know much about horses.

That height surprised me. 8.1′ Didn’t seem that high. I commented about this to Deanna.

Yes, I know the horse has a person, weighing at least 120 pounds, sitting on them — and I know the difference that 6 pounds make when I strap on my wrist weights to slog up Prospect Mountain Road.

Tonight I had some time. So I did what I had been meaning to do.

The World and Olympic records for High Jump. [I was in the ball park in what I had thought they were.]

Want to guess?

Men: …..8.03′ [2.45 m] World (set in 1993) and 7.84′ [2.39] Olympic (set in 1996).

Women: 6.86′ [2.09 m] World (set in 1987) and 6.76′ [2.06] Olympic (set in 2004).

So, the horse record is less than an 1″ different from the men’s high jump — obviously without the 120(+) burden.

Seems incongruous to me — especially since the horse record has stood for 64 years, one of the longest standing records in sports.
