nhliquorstoreHeads UP.

Not ALL New Hampshire Liquor stores will have Beaujolais Nouveau 2015 tomorrow — i.e., Beaujolais Nouveau Day, Thursday, November 19, 2015.

Bottles (and cases) will ONLY be available at the BIG outlets, e.g., Portsmouth, Concord, I-93 etc.

I got burned on this in 2013. I went to Farmington assuming that ALL stores would carry the Nouveau. Not so. Luckily I was on my way to Portsmouth and the BIG outlet, at the Rotary, had plenty.

I just checked with Wolfeboro — my ‘nearest’ and preferred outlet.

Attacks in Paris means we have to TONE DOWN 2015 Beaujolais Nouveau Day.

That is a given.

Yes, we have to observe SOME MOURNING.

I had read about this months ago and had done some quick Googling to find out what it was all out.

In a nutshell, starting tomorrow, October 1, 2015, UNLESS you pay by credit card by INSERTING the card, so the embedded chip can be read, the credit card company will REFUSE to compensate the MERCHANT IF the transaction proves to be fraudulent. This is ANOTHER attempt to cut back on credit card fraud — which is a HUGE, billion dollar, if not trillion dollar, problem. The chip in the card, unlike the magnetic stripe, is HARDER to ‘crack’ — both in terms of making counterfeits or changing the information.

creditcardemvBut note. We as consumer are still protected SINCE we can’t determine what technology the merchants use. So the credit card companies will still protect credit card users.

The penalty and liability is on the MERCHANT.

So, how many times have YOU INSERTED your card in — recently, in New Hampshire.

I have done it a FEW times. Walmart uses it. Haven’t seen Supermarkets do so yet. Actually swiped my card this weekend. Wow. Don’t even think the New Hampshire Liquor Stores were using INSERT.

But all this changes tomorrow.

IF you are NOT INSERTING after tomorrow QUESTION the merchant. I have. At places like supermarkets, those working the register, have no idea. And I don’t blame them. Not their job.

But a HEADS UP.

I was visiting the ‘small’ (auxiliary) NH Liquor Store on Fort Eddy Road, Concord, NH, this afternoon and as is my wont of late checked on the price and availability of the Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2012.

Kind of bad news for us on both fronts, but good news for Georges Duboeuf and the NH Liquor stores. The price is still $9.99 (with no discounts in sight) and they only have 3 bottles left. I talked to the manager. Per him that is all they have. So we are unlikely to see it get discounted in January. Most likely those three bottles, prominently placed at the front of the store, will get swept up in the New Year’s Eve buying binge.

At the Market Basket, 3 doors down on the same mall, they had 9 bottles left, again at $9.99. Those were on the ground, next to the main aisle. I am surprised they have not got kicked. Given their location, they may last a bit longer unless somebody runs into them with their cart.

I am sure that you will be able to find a few bottles here and there into 2013, especially online. Plus, there are other labels too.

But, this is just a heads up. Supplies are running out. If you fancy another bottle or haven’t had a bottle as yet, I would do my best to pick one up this weekend. There might be more bottles left at supermarkets as opposed to the Liquor Stores.

Enjoy. It was a good year.

Happy New Year. Hear is to Beaujolais Nouveau 2013. May it be another cracker.

Beaujolais Nouveau 2012 NOT ‘On Sale’ As Yet In NH Liquor Stores, But A Couple Of ‘Bargains’

I had thought we might see a price drop in the awfully compelling 2012 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau from $9.99 to $7.99, now that November had come and gone. This has been the case in the past though that might have been after Christmas. I will keep an eye.

Per the Wolfeboro Liquor Store, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the ‘Nouveau’ was selling well. They claimed to have sold 3 cases in the two weeks. Not sure if that is good or bad. They had three cases on display when I bought my bottle on ‘Nouveau‘ day. They were still using the same stacked 3 cases display. Could have been three different cases, or just a new case on top, the other two the same. I was at the Rochester Hannaford’s the day before Thanksgiving. They have a large wine aisle — double width. They had the same 3 case display, but only 2 bottles were missing from the top case. Again not sure how many cases they might have sold prior to that. I will stay on top of this and let you know as soon as they go on discount. Promise.

Yes, of course, there will be those (including my dear wife) that will readily and gladly quip that given the many, many, many gallons of wine I have consumed over the years, I couldn’t help but be an expert of sorts, I was amused and pleased that a professional came to much the same conclusion as me re. the Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2012. To be honest, I haven’t read a wine review in over a decade, and even then wine reviews were not something I read often given that I really bought or drank any ‘fancy’ wine. I had very pedestrian, though pragmatic criteria: it had to be wet and not too acidic. I am easy to please. I am enjoying my 2nd glass f the 2012 Nouveau as I write. It really is a pleasant, unobtrusive wine — as such ideal for writing with; i.e., lubricant for the rusty old brain.

Cheers.

The bottle that I bought at the NH Liquor Store in Wolfeboro, NH at 7:15pm on November 15, 2012, Beaujolais Nouveau Day 2012. Click to ENLARGE.

Uncorked and waiting my indulgence. It was well worth it. Click to ENLARGE.

As promised, I went to the NH Liquor Store in Wolfeboro, NH, this evening, Beaujolais Nouveau Day 2012, around 7:15 pm, and bought a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau. They only had the Georges Duboeuf and it was $9.99 as I had previously reported. At 7:15 pm I was the FIRST to buy a bottle from that store! More later on that.

The 2012 Georges Duboeuf is a quintessential Beaujolais Nouveau, in my opinion! Rejoice. It is fruity and aromatic. It is pleasantly tart, but that morphs quickly into a refreshing tanginess. It does not let you forget that it came from plump, purple grapes. You can feel the grapes, but in the nicest possible way. If you linger you can visualize the skins. It reminds you of eating grapes.

It is ultra palatable. It is extremely light. Even airy. Very easy to drink, with savour. Those that find reds ‘heavy’ should like this 2012. The ‘lightness’ is something to watch for in a Beaujolais Nouveau. It is expected to be that. If it comes across with flavor, as the 2012 does, you have a winner.

So, I am impressed. I only drank half a glass. I was tempted to have more. But, I refrained.

I wholeheartedly recommend this Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2012.

I did not get a chance to get to a Liquor Store till 7:15 pm this evening. I did go to the local Hannaford in Alton this afternoon but they didn’t have any Beaujolais Nouveau though they did have the Yellow Tail Shiraz at $5.99 a bottle. I bought one. I like the Yellow Tail Shiraz.

So at 7:15 pm, on a Thursday night, I visited the quite large, well laid out and well lit NH Liquor Store in Wolfeboro, NH. I was the only customer.

I found the Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2012 display. Three cases stacked on top of each other, the top case slashed open to show the bottles.

No sign. No price!

The opened case was full! I asked the girl. Yes, I was the first to buy a bottle! That is a shame.

I suspect the 2012 will go on sale for $7.99 within the month. I will buy a few then.

Till then, get a bottle. ENJOY. Cheers.

But, these days tipplers, most likely being snobbish since ‘Nouveau‘ has never been a refined wine, are giving it a miss and just using the day as an excuse to celebrate. I, a great lover of all celebrations, independent of cause, religion or culture, am all for that, but ‘come on’ … lets raise a glass to the ‘Nouveau‘. I plan to do so tonight. I will let you know what I think. Swansea was where I went for my first degree, 1971 to 1974. It was very different then. Just at the start of the upswing.

My favorite Beaujolais.

I just called the Gilford, NH ‘Liquor Store’ (the nearest to me) to check on the status of Beaujolais Nouveau.

The lady I spoke to, was very nice, but had never heard of Beaujolais Nouveau. But, she very kindly went off to find out and came back with a treasure trove of information. Wow.

They already have cases in the store BUT cannot sell them till tomorrow.

I had wondered about that. It appears that what they have is indeed from Georges Duboeuf. So it would appear that Georges Duboeuf get early shipments from France — which kind of debases the whole thing. Hhmmm. I will have to look into this.

They weren’t sure of the price, but given that I can be very persuasive I got them to open a case and scan a bottle. It scanned at $9.99. I think that is par for the course; the online $7.99 price not including shipping.

While looking for the phone number for the Liquor Store I happened to stumble upon the official NH November 2012 price list.

This is what they had for Beaujolais.

They have the G.D. ‘Villages‘ for sale at $7.99. That is a decent price for a bottle of this. ‘Villages’ is basically the ‘generic’ Beaujolais, the name itself denoting a large, diverse wine growing region.

If you want to try some ‘fancy’, but still affordable, ‘Beaujolais’ there is the ‘Brouilly’ (at the top). That is a decent wine, but not my favorite ‘Beaujolais’. ‘Fleurie’ is my favorite, though, of course, it changes from vintage to vintage, and taste is a very personal thing. I am AMAZED that they don’t have ‘Fleurie’ on the list. I even did a search on it. Nada! Wow. Must be a reflection of us in NH. ‘Fleurie’ is slightly upscale, but not that upscale.

Anyway, enjoy. Rejoice. Doing these posts is making me thirsty. I have to be in Wolfeboro tomorrow to take Devanee for her ‘Clearlakes Chorale‘ practice. The Liquor Store there is open till 9pm. I might pop down and get a bottle as a treat — for winning the election. I will keep you posted.

Cheers.

Per this online ad. Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2012 is being offered for $7.99. That is a good price. I haven’t checked shipping. I am assuming that the NH Liquor Stores will have it by this Friday for $9.99. I will let you know. Click to access this online wine store.

Not just from Georges Duboeuf, from others too. This is what I love about what I ‘do’. I get to learn new stuff every day, sometimes every few minutes. I was under the impression that ‘G.D.’ had the U.S. import rights for the ‘Nouveau’. Would appear not. Click to access the list.
