I have to confess to being taken aback by that an US adult, in 2017, would be UNFAMILIAR with the near ubiquitous Chinese Lucky Bamboo EVEN IF they are from New Hampshire.

So, this adds to my collection of classic questions asked by Americans, my all time favorite two being:

  1. “So Anu, tell me, how do they celebrate the 4th of July in England?” [From a neighbor in Maryland on the 4th in 1985.]
    ….
  2. “This U.K. ‘pound’, is that some kind of currency like the ‘dollar’?” [From a TWA airport counter clerk in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1981.]
    ….

WOW. I see them in gas stations and in many a New Hampshire Chinese restaurant.

Yes, we probably have at least 6 plants in our house — but we are strange.

One thing I did NOT know. It is not a BAMBOO! Neither was it NATIVE to China.

I am very familiar with bamboo which grows wild in Ceylon/Sri Lanka. Lucky bamboo does look like green, immature bamboo. It is a LILY PLANT from Africa. Fancy that.
