It was ‘OK’. Definitely ‘OK’.

Not great; definitely not even close to the ‘Greatest Show On Earth‘ — but it had its moments and acts.

At least two acts that were world-class and memorable: an amazing jump-rope performance and a delightful ‘quick change’ skit.

A few other decent acts: hula-hoops, trapeze, juggling and a balancing act.

Lot of loud Christmas music and bonhomie. It was like a very loud Nutcracker with acrobatic acts thrown in. But, they tried and it was very colorful and fast moving. Best geared for YOUNGER kids (10 and under) who haven’t been to too many circuses.

What they could do was limited. Fairly small stage. 80% of the acts literally revolved around this one hanging rope that could pull performers off the stage.

In reality it was just but one notch above the ALL-AMATEUR ‘Circus Smirkus‘ we had seen in Wolfeboro in August.

I will caution you about going to see this. It is expensive for what it was. We paid ~$65 each. Not sure it was worth that. We used to see ‘Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey‘, at that very same arena, in better seats for less and there is NO comparison between the two.

Really check it out before you get the tickets. Best for younger kids who have never been to a circus and already excited about Christmas.

Deanna saw this on the Web and brought it to my attention. Never heard of them. They are NOT, I repeat NOT, the circus act that performed at the “America’s Got Talent” (AGT) semi-finals 1-hour ‘results’ show, on Wednesday, September 12, 2018. That was ‘A Magical Circus Christmas. They seem MUCH BETTER — but they are not coming to New Hampshire. These folks are.

About time we had a circus in Manchester. The last ‘Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus‘, which we attended, was in April 2017. This is good. I hope they are halfway decent. We deserve that.

Went to the ‘Mint Bistro‘ in Manchester, New Hampshire for dinner. I wasn’t that impressed with the place nor its food BUT it had a nice airy, single-use men’s room with a large, clean, well-lit mirror. Had my Google Pixel 2 in my pocket and could not resist. This was the best part of going there for dinner!

I had heard about this earlier in the Summer.

Mahrajan‘ means festival. It looks good. Great menu and very realistic pricing.

Not sure whether I will be able to make it. I really would like to.

Here is a YouTube of the ‘George Maalouf Band‘ that will be playing Saturday & Sunday.

‘Riverdance’ 20th-Anniversary Tour — Some Pictures Of The Titchy Stage.

by Anura Guruge

My June 8, 2017 post on the
Manchester, NH show on June 7, 2017.

Cameras were not allowed into the arena BUT phones were — as if phones do not have cameras built-in! It is a travesty.

Deanna had her phone with her and took these pictures prior to the start. They clearly demonstrate the paucity of the stage.

‘Portland Pie Co’ (Manchester, NH) — Do NOT Bother Unless You Just Want Pizza.

by Anura Guruge

Riverdance — 20th Anniversary Tour‘, at the SNHU Arena, on June 7, 2017, was at 8pm. We decided to get there early to get some good parking and have dinner before the show.

Since the ‘Portland Pie Co.‘ was just a block away we decided to go there. We had been there, once before, a couple of years ago, with all four kids and it had been ‘OK’.

There was a 20-minute wait, though all the tables were not taken. I think it had to do with staffing.

It is nice enough inside and the house red wine is pretty damn good.

I ordered the ‘Fryeburg Fair Cheeseburger‘ without any bread and opted to UPGRADE with a fruit salad.

The two-patty cheeseburger sans a bun was pathetic. Emaciated and anemic. The burger patties at McDonald’s are twice as thick and ten times more flavorful. NOT IMPRESSED. It was insipid and unappetizing.

The fruit salad was a total bloody JOKE. 9 slices of apple, one grape and a sliver of peach. That was it. 98% apple. I couldn’t believe it.

Deanna had the ‘Steak and Bleu Salad‘ and was not enthused by the salad part!

Devanee had a pizza and that was fine.

Teischan had the ‘Nacho Grande‘ appetizer with the $3.00 beef burger upgrade. A lot of Nachos but, at best, there was probably half of a burger of meat.

‘Riverdance’ 20th-Anniversary Tour (Manchester, NH, June 7, 2017) — Not The Same As The Original.

by Anura Guruge

It is NOT a reenactment of the original from 20-years ago.

It was good, with some EXTREMELY brilliant dance segments (albeit, many of them NOT Irish), but the best way to describe it is that it was a watered down version.

Everything had been scaled back — starting with the stage. Even IF you hadn’t seen the original you would have been struck by how small the stage was. It was, at best, 70% the size of a normal stage at a theatre.

Please refer to this, June 11, 2017, post for pictures of the titchy stage.

Well, starting with the stage everything else was also on the small side. The orchestra was just 4 people, one of them the drummer. The huge, iconic hanging drum they had in the original was not to be seen.

More fiddle and flute segments, some of them quite long and less Irish dancing — or dancing in general.

A Russian dance segment, which was VERY, VERY good, which I do not remember from the original.

What I refer to as the “West Side Story” segment only had 6 dancers on stage, 4 Irish, one black and one Latino. The latter two were QUITE OUTSTANDING. The stars of the show — and they knew it!

Some good dance segments — from the original, and it was good to see them.

The lighting and graphics, as one would hope, was superior to what was used 20-years ago.

The kids in the audience loved it — including 11-year old Teischan.

The lady (a stranger) I sat next to, like I, had seen the original in Boston 20-years ago. We compared notes. She pointed out the scaled-back nature before I brought it up. So, I was not alone.

I can’t be 100% sure of this BUT I got a distinct feeling that the ‘twinkling toe’ sounds on the ‘board’ were LIP-SYNCHED! I hope I am wrong.

P.S., Cameras were not permitted in the arena.

Hamster #2 For Teischan (11).

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Teischan wanted, very badly, a hamster for Christmas 2016. Since we were going away right after Christmas it was agreed that we would get the hamster when we got back. And that we did — on January 4, 2017.

She wanted a teddy bear hamster and we eventually found one she liked, albeit female as opposed to the male that she thought would be better, at Petco in Manchester, NH. She named it Rebel.

Rebel was spoilt. The dogs adored her — as they had done the rabbits. She had two cages and lot of toys. Teischan spent time with her everyday. Her cage was brought up to my office every night so that she would have human company for a longer period during the nocturnal hours that she was awake.

Everything was going well. On Saturday, April 22, 2017 we were going to Maine for the day. We got up early. Rebel who had been fine at 1am that morning when I went to bed was ill, very ill. It was sudden and unexpected. No signs of illness or distress prior to this. It was pretty obvious that she was dying! We were willing to cancel the trip. But, Teischan wanted to go.

When we got back Rebel was dead. I had to check.

She had been with us 108 days, just over 3 months.

We were all cut-up. This was so unexpected. I did a fair amount of research to try and understand what had happened. I am still none the wiser.

At first Teischan was saying she didn’t want another hamster till the Summer. I knew that that would change. And it did, last week.

Again, I was on the phone calling up pet stores.

The same Petco that we bought Rebel yet again came up trumps.

We went on Thursday, May 11, 2017 to look at the four teddy bear hamsters they had at the store. Teischan picked this one. She named it ‘Treble’ not because of the meaning BUT because it rhymed with ‘Rebel’ — and it is ‘rebel’ with a ‘T’ in front.

So, that is the story. I really hope this one stays with us for a few years rather than a few months. They are not expensive, compared to dogs, BUT I still hate to see any animals die.
