This was Serendipitous to say the least. Yes, I arranged for this ‘Dragon Parade‘ to take place in Concord for the 2017 ‘Multicultural Festival‘ but I was NOT supposed to he heading it. The plan was that it would be headed by a Chinese who knew how to ‘dance’ the head. And that is how we set off. The tall, lanky gentleman behind me, on the second pole, at the head. I had the second pole so I could tell him which way to go. BUT, the head is heavy and it was windy and holding it up, while being buffeted by the wind, gets hard. So, halfway through we asked me if I would swap. I wasn’t going to say NO. It was a blast and rare honor. Not sure whether I will ever get the chance again. This is the only picture I have.

This, however, was not the first time I have headed a Chinese Dragon Parade. I had done it, in 2015, with this same dragon, at the UNH ‘Confucius Institute‘, Chinese New Year Miaohui (Temple Fair) celebrations.

It was a BLAST. Had a lot of fun. Got to be at the head of the dragon, by coincidence, we we brought it into the State House Lawn. That was a thrill.

My Garmin Vivoactive HR said that I did 17,000 steps while at the festival. That is more than when I go running!

Day 1 of Concord’s duly vaunted ‘Market Days 2017‘ or ‘Market Days Festival 2017‘, if I were to use the full moniker. The weather could not have been any better. Low 80Fs, sunny skies and nice breeze. Concord, always an attractive city, was resplendent. At its majestic best. Colorful, cheerful, moderately crowded and full of good cheer.

We were there for about 3.5 hours, in the afternoon, starting at 2pm. It was good. We went last year too and I will be there on Saturday, for the ‘Multicultural Festival‘ — I a Committee Member and Sponsor.

IF you are around the next two days definitely make it down to Concord. You will enjoy it.

It was serendipitous, without doubt. I came across this delightful ‘Consignment Gallery‘ last Thursday night when we ‘did’ Concord “Market Days Festival” — in part to watch our neighbour ‘Kristie’ sing at “Tandy’s Pub“, in Eagle Square. This ‘Gallery’ — and it is indeed that as opposed to just a ‘shop’ — is just around the corner from Eagle Square. Though they have been there on N. Main St. (smack bang in the middle) this was the first time we had noticed it — mainly because we don’t walk that street that much.

Glad we stumbled upon it. Really well laid out. Very inviting, warm and congenial. Very colorful and a visual treat. Loved it. The prices were extremely compelling. It was close to 8pm and Deanna was not in a shopping mood. That was a shame because I would have bought a few things. But we will go back.

If you are in Concord, NH you should definitely stop by. It really is like entering an Art Gallery! What more can I say.

One Picture Each Of Each Of The Performances.

See list below — in order, of appearance at the Festival,
and as such also of the pictures
[left to right –>].

The List of Performances (in order and corresponding to above gallery).
Emcee Victoria Adewumi, Wah Lum Dragon and Lion Dance, Capital Celts, In the Field Irish Dancers (x2), NH School of Scottish Arts’ Highland Dancers, Himalaya Heritage Music Group (x2),
Holy Trinity Greek Dance Troupe, Nepali Performance, Filipino Folk Dancers of NH, Salsa Colombiana, Nepali Performance, Song of the Lark, Filipino Folk Dancers of NH (2nd dance), Cumbia Colombiana & Akwaaba Traditional African Drumming and Dance Ensemble

Though we have only missed one of the 14 (in total) ‘Laconia Multicultural Days’, this, inexplicably, was our first ‘Concord Multicultural Festival’ (and definitely not the last).

It was good. Very, very good. Loved it. 4 solid, packed hours — 2 to 6pm — in what was, again, picture perfect weather (high 70s). It was brilliant. Vary varied, fast paced, 15 – 20 minute performances and a wonderful ambience and spirit. I would say there was always at least 200 people in ‘that’ corner of the State House Lawn and towards the end, with the African Drummers in full voice we probably had 300 – 350 folks — many dancing.

It was great. So good to see such events in still 90% white New Hampshire. Bravo. Kudos.

I liked, without exception, all the performances. We, given our annual pilgrimage to Boston’s Chinatown for Chinese New Year, are no strangers to Dragon Dances. We have seen plenty. So seeing one here was not that special. We have also seen the Himalayan, African Drumming and Nepali acts in Laconia. But they never get old. They were good. Since we go to the Loon “Highland Games“, religiously, the Scottish/Celtic parts were not new to us either, BUT they too were good.

If I had to pick three favorites I would have to say Himalaya Heritage Music Group, Akwaaba African Drumming and Irish Field Dancers. But, I again stress, it was all good.

The Emcee Victoria Adewumi was outstanding. The PA system needed to be bigger (i.e., more ‘oomph’ with more speakers). But that minor.

I am and I was so happy. Great day. Ended up with another huge meal at Tandy’s Pub in Eagle Square as we had done on Thursday.

For reasons, inexplicable, this was the first Concord, N.H. “Market Days Festival” we had been to. I guess we had always meant to go but never made it. This year we had the definitive impetus in that our neighbor Kristie Hallberg (Kristianna Palm) was performing at “Tandy’s Pub” (Eagle Square), on Thursday June 23, 2016, as part of the festival. So we made a point of going and we are sure glad we did so.

Yes, it proved to be the perfect, Goldilocks evening for such a street festival. Sunny but not too hot (or cold, for that matter). Low 70s. Just idyllic weather. New Hampshire at its Summer best.

Very colorful, extremely congenial, not too loud and not mobbed. Again, just right. Very laid back. It oozed fun and happiness. We had a real good time. Plan to go again. We had dinner at Tandy’s, while Kristie was performing, and it was outstanding on all counts (even if service was a tad slow given how busy they were).

Definite, unstinted recommendation. You will enjoy it. Smile.
