I Got Myself A Google ‘Pixel 5’ To Replace My 13-Month Old ‘Pixel 4’ & I Continue Using ‘Google Fi’ As My Carrier.

by Anura Guruge

First & so far ONLY Picture With My Google Pixel 5.
Straight out of my ‘office’ window.

Though I still take as many pictures as ever, & post at least 7-a-day, I have basically stopped using a dedicated camera — though I still have two ‘new’ Panasonics.

So, if my phone has become my camera THEN I have to stay on top of camera technology. While I appreciate that the Pixel 5 did NOT offer much of an upgrade re. the camera, it is still new camera hardware & software. Plus, Google gives me a 24-month, 0% APR deal.

PLUS, I wanted to go back to a fingerprint reader!

2020 was a REAL bad year to have ‘face recognition‘! Why? Masks!

After saying that setting up the fingerprint reader was one of the few hiccups with the new phone. I finally managed but it took quite a few tries.

I also had trouble downloading the ‘Google Fi‘ APP from the ‘Google Play Store’. Other than that, it was a breeze.

So far, so good.

Actually bought TWO Pixel 5s — one for one of my daughters too.

“Great Smog Of London 1952” & Remarkable Parallels With 2020’s COVID-19.

by Anura Guruge

I happened to see a program that touched upon the 1952 “Great Smog” & was amazed, amused & sobered by what happened then & what happened 68-years ago.

This cracked me up. They was controversy then (as now) as to the effectiveness of wearing masks. Human nature does not change. WOW.

It only lasted 5-days but thousands died. Despite warnings to the Government nothing had been done. Hospitals didn’t have enough equipment & staff. Deja vu all over again. The parallels were quite striking.

Trump’s ‘Medal Of Freedom’ To Jim Ryun, Yesterday — NO Face Masks To Be Seen! (I Kid You Not.)

Being the news junkie I am, I saw a clip of this on some channel.

I was IMMEDIATELY struck by the lack of masks — since this was within 24-hours of Trump touting masks.

What amazed me was that the news channel (I was watching (which was probably CNN or MSNBC)) did NOT point out the absence of masks.

Check it out.

This is so CRAZY.

Google Pixel 4 ‘Face Recognition’ Not Much Good With Face Masks; Pixel 5, LUCKILY, Will Go Back To Fingerprint.

by Anura Guruge

From: ‘gizchina.com’. Google ‘Pixel 5’ for more.

It is both funny & frustrating trying to CONFIRM my identity to my phone when I am wearing a face mask!

The timing could NOT have been worse for Google. Even they would not have been able to predict that face masks would be in vogue in mid-2020.

Yes, most of the time I can keep my Google 4 ‘unlocked’ due to its proximity to my TRUSTED Garmin Fenix 6 smartwatches.

The problem arises when I try to use ‘SMART PAY’. And ironically that is also related to the COVID-19 pandemic. I would rather not touch credit card readers.

But, the phone, for good reason, needs you to verify that it is indeed you trying to use ‘Smart Pay’. Therein lies the problem.

I have NOT been a fan of ‘face recognition’. It works BUT it always seems finicky. Touch-and-go. I much preferred the fingerprint reader. I will HAVE to get a Pixel 5 just for that. SMILE. Well, I will keep you posted.

Sri Lankan Bowler Lahiru Gamage Wouldn’t Be Out Of Breath Bowling In Delhi If He Lost 20 Pounds.

by Anura Guruge

I have been meaning to comment on this for quite few months.

Quite a few of the Sri Lankan cricket team carry too much weight around their belly — classic Dahl belly.

Being even 10 pounds overweight makes a difference when playing cricket at the Test level. You are on the field, when fielding, for 6 – 7 hours.

Gamage is the worst — and he is supposedly a fast bowler (though I think he is more medium pace, than anything else).

Him getting sick in Delhi was understandable. He is too fat. Yes, I, given that I too am 20 lbs overweight, should not be complaining, BUT I am nearly 65-years old and no longer playing cricket. [Though to be fair I was fat when I played cricket.]

Anywho …

Gamage needs to go on a low-carb diet.

Sri Lanka Cricketers Wear Masks In Delhi During 3rd Test — Too Ashamed To Show Their Faces.

by Anura Guruge

I first saw this whole sorry incident in the 2nd day Highlights on Willow.

I was incredulous!

I then went and watched the ball-by-ball video to get the whole picture.

It came across as GAMESMANSHIP! It was embarrassing. Sri Lanka continues to further its reputation as unsporting cricketers. That is shame.

Yes, they are being totally outclassed by India and it must be hard to be in the field getting pounded by the Indians — especially Koli.

But the mask thing just made them look petty and pathetic. It really came across that they were, quite rightly, too ashamed to show their faces.

It upset me. I hate to see the spirit of cricket being besmirched.

There should be further action. The whole team should be FINED.

Other teams should REFUSE to play Sri Lanka. Boycott them until they learn some manners.

The top 4 masks are Sri Lankan (Ceylonese) Devil Masks.
They are used to scare away evil demons.
I have had the 3 big ones for over 30 years!
The little one was a key chain fob.
The other two masks are Latin American
— and are Deanna’s.

Wolfeboro, NH, ‘First Night’ Celebrations New Year’s Eve 2012 (i.e., December 31). Worth Going.

The hot air balloons were a blast.

A bit like Venice in Wolfeboro. Even I made a mask. It was a a lot of fun. We were in that hall for a good 2 hours.

It was a lot of fun.

The Wolfeboro puppets are a class act. Bravo. I even prefer them to the Hanover butterflies.

Though we had started going, with glee, to the midnight fireworks a couple of years earlier, last year was the first time we bought buttons and participated in the whole ‘First Night’ Wolfeboro experience. It was a blast.

Yes, the weather could not have been better. It, as you might be able to judge from some of the pictures, was balmy. That made a huge difference. Yes, I am going to buy some $7 buttons in the next few weeks. At 50% off they are a deal. At $7 per ‘adult’ you can’t beat it.

The hot air balloon building would appeal to most kids. But, make sure you allocate at least 2 hours for it. [Just so that you know, the hamsters race inside plastic balls! So, if you are hoping to see hamsters charging down lanes like miniature greyhounds, you might be disappointed. Very nice pet show. Teischan and I went last year while Devanee worked on the balloon.]

The parade and fireworks are a must. You can see both without having a button.

The ‘hat & mask making’ is a lot of fun too. We all had a ball.

I am a sucker for (good) harp music. So I am going to try and catch Aine Minogue at the church. Never heard of her. But, since I will not be going to heaven, I need to get my fill of harp music here.

I do have a gripe, a major one at that. Yes, next year I will contact the Committee and see if we can fix it. My gripe. This whole New Year’s Eve party winds down before midnight! Yes, we have the fireworks … but that is it. They need to have at least one hour of partying after that.

Yes, as an adopted Scot who has celebrated Hogmanay in Scotland, I know how to do this in style. I will share my expertise with the relevant folks. You got to do the ‘Auld Lang Syne‘ and the ladies need to be kissed by a ‘tall’ (by Scottish standards, which means 5′ 6″ and above) DARK man. No, I am not volunteering, though this was the reason I used to get invited up to Scotland for Hogmanay. Chimney sweeps are hard to find, and I was reasonably ‘civilized’ and moderately ‘presentable’.

Click to watch Hogmanay in Glasgow, Scotland on YouTube. They have lots more video.
