‘The Ticket’ (2015) Movie: Predictable But Sobering, Modern Day, Non-Religious Parable That Wasn’t All That Great.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access IMDb.com listing.

We watched it, without knowing ANYTHING about it, because I mistook the actor on the ‘poster’ (shown above) for ‘Matthew’ from ‘Downton Abbey‘.

He is NOT ‘Matthew’ but he does, on occasion, bear an uncanny resemblance.

This is NOT a ‘B-movie’. If anything it is like a D-movie.

Slightly interesting story BUT extremely predictable. You knew what would happen in the end, though you hoped they wouldn’t subject you to it.

Slightly sobering and it does carry a message.

I was worried it was going to a ‘God movie’. It wasn’t, though God does get mentioned.

The title refers to a fairly well-known ‘joke’ THOUGH I can say it better!

Not recommending it. Just documenting it because I did watch it.

Think – Today: When Did Today’s Playing Cards (Deck Of Cards) Make An Appearance?

by Anura Guruge

thinktodaybanner

deck-of-cardsWe are all familiar with them. Most houses typically have at least one deck of cards lying around. So, when did playing cards, we we know of them now. make an appearance? Was it a very long time ago or was it more recent?

Think first, then research, then THINK again. Think for the pleasure of thinking.

Yesterday’s ‘Think’: “Name Of The Donkey In The Nativity Of Jesus” — only two of the synoptic gospels talk about the nativity, these being Luke and Matthew. Neither mention a donkey, either in the manger or as having been ridden by Mary on the long, arduous trip. That trip on a donkey is only mentioned in the ‘Gospel of James‘, an apocryphal Gospel. But, there is no name mentioned. ‘Nestor’, the donkey, was a 1977 Hollywood creation.

I had, for YEARS, adamantly refused to maintain a Facebook account. Deanna, an avid Facebooker, maintained some pages for me because everybody tells you that you have to have a Facebook presence. Yes, in 2006 or 2007 I tried Facebook for a few months and did not like it at all, at all. I deactivated my account! about 18 months ago I re-activated it BUT had it battened-down, as much as I could, so that very few people would see it. Very occasionally I set up ‘Web presence’ for people, typically lawyers, and when doing so it helps to have an active Facebook account to get various things going. So that was the reason.

Then last Friday, September 25, 2015, Itzik, his delightful wife, Iza, and his youngest 3 kids came to visit, for dinner — they having come over from Israel, for 2 weeks. Itzik’s first visit to the U.S. in 22 years and the very first for Iza and the kids.

reenginererI have, in my “Reengineering IBM Networks” book (published 1996), referred to Itzik as my alter ego in the Holy Land. Itzik and I go back to 1992. He is in the ‘Top 5’ of PIVOTAL figures in my life! Itzik changed my life (for the better I like to think (maybe hope)). Itzik was the one who convinced me to QUIT corporate life and go off on my own as an INDEPENDENT consultant/analyst. My ‘parents’ had tried to get me to do that for years BUT it was Itzik, in the end, who made sure I did. Moreover, he managed to get me to do so the VERY WEEK my son, Matthew, was born. He, along with another GREAT man, Ed Grace, came to New Hampshire in May 1992, checked into a hotel in Nashua and told me: “Yes, we know your wife is having a baby. No problem. You do what you have to do. When you have time come and see us.” They meant it too. So the day after Matthew was born, with my wife’s permission, I had breakfast with them.

My Danielle, 1992, aged 3. Yes, she was at the White House! Click to ENLARGE. Recognize the Lady in Red.

I quit my rather cushy job with BBN, as their ‘Principal Consultant’, two weeks to the day of Matthew’s birth! My wife, after a long career at Wang, had quit work 3 years earlier when my daughter, Danielle, was born. So now with two kids I set off with no guaranteed salary, health insurance or other benefits. It worked out. Thanks to Itzik.

Itzik, the founder of the Israeli ‘GoDaddy’, Interspace.net, is one of the cleverest men I know — and I have been very fortunate to know a few. Plus, he is hugely successful and 3 of his kids are megastars! So I listen to Itzik.

So when Itzik BEAT ME up, the way that only Israelis can do (and I have been ‘beaten up’ by quite a few of them given that I have done a TON of work for Israeli companies), that I was NOT on Facebook I finally relented. So …

On Saturday I started afresh on Facebook and signed up Itzik as my first friend. That was apropos. Itzik and I go back a long time.

I hope I have done the right thing. I am still not convinced. SMILE.

It was this TR8 that caught my eye as we turned the corner on Rte 1A. Exactly the same color as my MGM 327X registration TR7 back in the U.K. 1983 – to 1985.

This TR6 might have to come home with me one of these days. It seems to have my name on it.

WOW. Think this one is way beyond my means.

Devanee is into Jags. not sure where she gets it from. Checking out this Jag. Nice, but not as fancy as she would like. The interior was way too shabby for her likings.

At ’62’ am I too old for this? No. No. NO. This was NOt at Brit Bits. It is NOT even in New Hampshire. Devanee likes it. She thinks Dad should get it, but I am not sure IF I am too old for a car like this.

I had written about “Brit Bits” last December and I know we must have driven past it — but that obviously was when I was ignoring looking at British sports cars true to my promise to Deanna that I would not get a sports car while my son, Matthew, was still in College. Well Matthew graduated from Wheaton (MA) last Summer.

I was taking the scenic Rte 1A way back from our Mother’s Day 2015 jaunt to Hampton Beach. As I took the corner I espied the TR8. Exact same color as my TR7. We pulled up.

Wow. What a display. Good job that they were closed. Deanna has slowly become resigned. She is now always outvoted. Devanee too is into British cars. That is good. I am glad. The next car will be a Jag BUT not from “Brit Bits”. My problem is trying to find a Jag that is old enough to blend in with me. Stay tuned. We are already planning going back to Rye to see “Brit Bits”. Devanee is adamant that we are now going to have 4 cars. Sounds fair to me. She will be driving this time this year. 3 drivers, 3 cars and one spare. Seems reasonable to me. Yes, we can get three cars in the garage. We have already done it. The van can stay outside.

Le Pan 10.2″ 16GB Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) Tablet — So Far, So Good.

I have now had a Le Pan 10.2″ Android Tablet for just under 48 hours — it was delivered late Monday afternoon. So far, so good. My 2nd Android Tablet, the 7th Android Tablet we have had — and the first which is not a 7″. I got it from Walmart — as part of their ‘warranty’ program.

This one was a replacement for an Asus MemoPad 7 Tablet which died after 7 months. It is night-and-day compared with the Asus. The Le Pan, which I got after some intensive (but as ever rushed) research, is ALL that all the reviews say: it is fast, it has a beautiful display and the battery life is appalling. The latter is NOT really a problem for me. I am NOT a big user of pads. Most days, MAX I will use one for 30 minutes — 20 minutes of that between 8:20 and 9:00 am in the morning, lying in bed, drinking my coffee and ‘watching’ CNN/CNBC. Even the 10.2″ screen is too little for me. I like to have close to 40″ at my disposal.

P1060817

We got our first Google Nexus 7 in July 2012 — the very first day they were available in the U.S. I had pre-ordered one, for Teischan, through Google and it was delivered on the GA [General Availability] date. Teischan went through three (3) Nexus 7s! I guess 7 year olds and Pads are not the best combination in the world. Christmas 2013, after she had been without a pad for a few weeks (though she had a brand new Windows 8 laptop), I got her a cheap, $79, Visual Land 16GB 7″ Pad from Walmart. It appears to do all she wants — which is mainly YouTube and some Websites, e.g. Disney. But of late I have noticed she is using her laptop more than her pad. Devanee has had a Nexus 7, 16GB since October 2012, and much to all of our amazement, managed to keep it intact all this time.

The Asus I got, which is the same really as the Nexus 7, was never stellar. I never really cared for it. It was temperamental.

Like the Le Pan much more — but the Le Pan is also twice as much!

So this is what my latest “Google Play” device dashboard looks like. Yes, all the Android Pads are on MY gmail account. Just seemed easier with the kids, though they also have their own accounts. I only display the working pads — for obvious reasons. Transferring APPS from a ‘dead’ pad to a new one is a piece of cake. Just select the APP and hit install. The name of the new Pad will appear and just say OK.

I hope the Le Pan works out. I am so fed up with getting new Pads. I will, of course, keep you posted.
