Brilliant Article Re. My Main Man, ‘Gordon Greenidge’ By ‘Mark Nicholas’.

That I named my son after him must say it all as to who & what I think about this great man. As I have said, many times, no man has given me greater pleasure than ‘Gordon Greenidge‘. I wanted my son to be ‘Gordon Guruge’ (GG) — same as Gordon. His mother & her family, ardent Catholics all, claimed that ‘Gordon’ was too Jewish a name! This was long time ago & I did NOT know any better. Since then I have come to know a lot of Jews & I have yet to meet a Gordon. So, I relented that ‘Gordon’ would be his middle name. NO! ‘Matthew’ is NOT Biblical. Named after ‘Matthews Southern Comfort‘ (with Ian Matthews). One of my favorite groups at the time — & I have always liked Ian Matthews.

I was a fully paid up member of the Hampshire Cricket Club (HCC) from 1975 to about 1982 (& I left Britain in 1985 (for what was meant to be 2-years in the States)). So, I was at Hampshire during SOME of the glory days of Gordon (not to mention Barry Richards, Andy Roberts & Malcolm Marshall). Yes, I even saw Mark Nicholas play.

I, of course, knew Gordon & he knew me by sight. I saw him occasionally away from cricket grounds & he would always stop to chat. Very nice guy.

Much of what Mark talks about in this article was AFTER I (alas) left the U.K.

Mark writes well as you would expect of a man of his erudition. This made my day. I wanted to share this with YOU. Enjoy.

Thank YOU, Gordon. Hope you are well. SMILE.

I did not know about the toy tin train or the Queen’s coronation cover,
but I had asked for a big Poppy Pin from the U.K.
and a Jensen record player (turntable).

Why I hadn’t got a Jensen earlier is just another one of those inexplicable mysteries that litter my life.

Yes, I have two (I think) turntables and a few old amplifiers and speakers stored in various nooks and crannies
but they have never been hooked up.

I did have a record player when we lived in Gilford but I gave it away
because I planned to get a new one. Well that was 7 years ago.

My last real system was my Linn Sondek, Naim and Linn Isobarik
system, which I had bought in the U.K.,
in 1981 when I first started doing public seminars.

I just checked eBay. The prices are crazy.
I think they were crazy in 1981 but my finances were different.
I don’t need a Linn right now — or ever.

There was a time when I had over 600 LPs.

I whittled that down to about 300 when we lived in Gilford.

Then I decided just to keep the very special ones and threw the others away.

I now have about 60 — most from the late 1960s and early 1970.

They have seen a lot of use.

I would cringe have a $500 Klyde cartridge traversing those grooves.

Actually haven’t bothered to check what the cartridge situation
is with the Jensen.

OK. I just checked. ~$35. Hhhhmmm.

I had, and still have, some very esoteric, eclectic, kind-of-folksy
taste in music. Here are some of the LPs that I have
been listening to, again, with the Jensen.

I had genuinely missed the ‘Strawbs‘.
‘The Man Who Called Himself Jesus’ still does numbers on me.

I saw the ‘Strawbs’, kind of by mistake, in 1969.

‘If it was so simple’ by ‘Longdancer‘ is my theme song for life.

Pentangle‘ should have been bigger.

I saw ‘Quintessence‘ in Swansea in 1972 or 1973.

“Matthew’s Southern Comfort”.
That is WHY my son is called “Matthew”!
That tells its own story.
I wanted to call him ‘Gordon’ after my all time hero Gordon Greenidge.
I was told I couldn’t because it sounded too Judaic!
Never understood that. So the compromise was: Matthew Gordon Guruge.
The only child that I named that has a middle name.
