U.S. Withdrawal From UNESCO A Travesty — And, Yes, Personal To I.

I was an UNESCO brat. That is why it is personal. My adoptive father worked for UNESCO from September 1968 to c. 2013 — Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to UNESCO from 1985 to 1992. From 1992 till c. 2013 (or even later) he had honorary (I think) advisory roles with them. During the 18 years he worked for UNESCO itself he was based in Paris (2 terms), New Delhi & Bangkok. When he was Ambassador to UNESCO be was based in Paris and was also the Sri Lankan Ambassador to France.

So, I am no stranger to UNESCO. UNESCO put me through school. Whether that was right or wrong is another matter — BUT such ‘financial support for kids’ is pretty standard with most ‘international’ jobs because there is this belief that the kids have been uprooted from their home country (which is, of course, true).

Yes, I have seen BOTH the good and bad of UNESCO — and in my youth there have been times when I have railed against and ridiculed the extravagance and waste. Yes, ‘senior staff’, especially the diplomats (such as my adoptive father) led a good life, but that again is par for the course for all diplomats.

Yes, UNESCO has done good and the ‘Silk Road Program‘ (and I was actually there for the Sri Lanka chapter of that in 1980) and the World Heritage Sites are but SOME of the examples. No question that, by and large, developing countries get more benefits from UNESCO than the developed ones. But, that was the point of setting up UNESCO. To spread and share the largess.

All that said …

The U.S. has NOT been PAYING its member contribution to UNESCO since 2011 and now owes upwards of $600 MILLION!

That UNESCO did NOT kick-out the U.S. during that time is a disgrace to UNESCO.

I do NOT think that the U.S. or any other country should be able to PICK-AND-CHOSE their membership affiliations with UN Agencies.

It should be ONE-FOR-ALL, & ALL-FOR-ONE.

If the U.S. wants to be a part of the UN it also has to belong to UNESCO and pay its dues!

Anywho …

This is not going to happen till December 31, 2018 and that is a LONG WAY away. Much water will flow under all the bridges in the World prior to that.

My new ‘favorite place to visit‘ — close to home.

Second visit in 53-days, I am bummed we didn’t go earlier since I got ‘Membership’ when we visited, for the very first time, on July 18, 2017.

A delightful place — both inside and outside, with the hikes, waterfalls, carriage houses, flowers, mushrooms ….

A paradise for a camera toter.

Highly recommended. It is now on my list of places to take visitors.

Suffice to say I have 400+ pictures from today. I will NEXT post the pictures and that will be a treat. Promise. Enjoy.

Castle In The Clouds Flowers Anura Guruge Sony a7 II July 16 2017 New Hampshire

Inexplicably and inexcusably this was my first time to the Castle itself at the ‘Castle in the Clouds‘, Moultonborough, New Hampshire, though I had been there last year, with Teischan to go horseback riding. I was beyond impressed. All-round spectacular experience. So much so that I got a 1-year membership on the spot. Hope to go back soon now that I have the lay of the land. Highly recommended.

Also see my ‘Flowers at the Castle in the Clouds‘, ‘Mushrooms at the Castle in the Clouds‘ & 7-images of the day.

Well, just past midnight, with another chapter of the latest book done and dusted I decided to check whether ‘Jet.com‘ was online — as it was supposed to be.

It was. Though I had not received my promised e-mail giving me 3-months free membership that offer was available to all — as an introductory inducement. Jet interests me on multiple fronts. We buy a fair amount of stuff from Amazon. At a minimum we get 3 deliveries a month from Amazon, and often 3 deliveries a week. So if I can really save 10% to 15% that could start adding up. Plus I own a couple of shares of Amazon (here and there) and I write a LOT of Amazon options — and I mean A LOT! So anything that can influence AMZN stock prices has my undivided attention.

I started by checking on cameras since that would give me a true oranges-to-oranges comparison. First thing I discovered and I suspected that this would be the case. Selection is VERY LIMITED. Very limited. So that is a bummer. Unless this gets better Jet will never really challenge AMZN.

So lets start with this Fuji camera.

jetfuji

It is $799 with Prime at Amazon & $798 .95 (with free shipping) at Buydig.com. That is one heck of a SERIOUS discount — and in this case they don’t even show the Amazon equivalent. This could make a difference. If I am buying a $800 camera a $47 discount CANNOT be sneezed at.

So here is another, this one having the comparison pre-listed to make it easy.

jetolympus
$23.94 off a $399 camera. A 6% discount. NOT the 10% to 15% promised BUT $23.94 is worth saving.

And then this and I am in the market for one of these (to store all the pictures that we take with about 6 different devices in ONE PLACE).

jetwd
That they only carry, as yet, a limited selection of products is a definite drawback. But they will be definite bad news for Buydig.com. I feel bad for them since they try hard.

Well over the coming weeks I will always check Jet before I buy anything from Amazon. But as an AMZN shareholder I am not too worried right this minute. That could change. Amazon might start discounting their products!

jetsignawdsadI had never heard of Jet.com! Yikes! Not sure how that happened. I just read about them while scanning the investor news on Amazon on ‘MarketWatch‘. Yes, I have a couple of shares of AMZN.

Wow. They reckon that they can undercut Amazon by 10% to 15% — after you part with a $50 membership. I think I just got 3 months FREE membership. I pay $99 for Amazon Prime and I will probably keep on paying that JUST for the free video. So I am cool with that.

Given that we do 95% of our non-grocery shopping online, and 95% of that is on Amazon, 10% to 15% savings can add up for us. But to get back the $50 membership you have to first spend around $450 (depending on whether the savings are 15% or 10%). So I need to think about that AFTER the free membership. Yes, a new camera might be in my future. A 10% saving on a camera will definitely pay for the membership and more.

So I will keep you posted. They go live tomorrow from what I can see. Sign up now. You can still get free membership.

Amazon Prime Is Worth $99/Year For ‘Instant Video’ — Irrespective Of “Prime Day”.

I dragged my heels for years before I finally broke down and signed up for Amazon Prime earlier this year. I got it mainly for the free 2-day shipping. I got fed up of waiting 10 days to get the non-Prime free shipping from Amazon (on orders above $35 (used to be $25)).

Soon afterwards, totally independently and with Amazon Prime not a consideration, we got a Roku 3. Then we discovered Amazon Prime Instant Video. Hundreds oamazonprimef FREE movies and TV shows — including “Downton Abbey”, “Mr. Selfridge” etc. We were hooked. We definitely have got our monies worth just on the videos and we use the free shipping at least three or four times a week. That I just saw that they have the Jim Corbett “India: Kingdom of the Tiger” is just an added bonus. As a pre-teenager, in Ceylon, I discovered the Jim Corbett tiger hunting books. I read every one of them. I still have one copy from the 1960s in my “most favorite of books” display shelf! So Amazon Prime has worked for us. I haven’t used the music download capability but Devanee has started using it over the last few weeks. So that is another plus. The free Kindle sharing thing is a sham! Only works IF you have a Kindle device. That is naughty.

I did ‘waste’ an hour or so looking at ‘stuff’ during today’s “Amazon Prime” day. Yes, I will confess that I really didn’t need anything per se today and that was probably a major factor. There were some interesting and fairly well priced items. But they weren’t compelling enough. I don’t think that was entirely Amazon’s fault. I just wasn’t in the mood. The one DSLR camera they had was not of interest.

But, I will be an Amazon Prime customer for years to come. That I am an Amazon shareholder is also a factor. The Amazon share performance this year has more than paid for the $99 I needed for the membership.

I try not to buy from Walmart.com. Yes, I do shop Walmart brick-and-mortar. But Walmart.com is NOT Amazon. For online shopping Amazon is trumps.

From, and with thanks to, http://www.deviantart.com.

I checked again.

Logged onto my account at Anthem.com to see if I can print a Temporary ID Card. NO, I can’t. Still not working.

From what I gather Anthem as yet to get back to the the New Hampshire Insurance Department to explain why this is NOT working after they had led them to believe that it was — and that that is what New Hampshire consumers should be doing. Part of the reason I am checking, a few times a day, is for the Department. I have promised them that I will let them know as soon as I can print a Temporary Card. They want to know. They have been excellent.

Today is January 10, 2014. The supposed deadline by which we needed to have paid our premiums in order to have ACA healthcare coverage as of January 1, 2014. As far as I know there is no real deadline anymore! They are saying 5 day extension BUT we know that that too will have to be extended.

Well, Anthem has yet to charge my credit card for the payment I paid on December 27, 2013. That was EXACTLY 2 weeks ago, i.e., 14 days. I have heard that it is taking Anthem 17 days! This is crazy. It is so sad. Thanks to the NH Insurance Department I have stopped worrying about it. Plus I have a working member ID — as my Anthem.com account testifies.

I feel bad for those that are still struggling with Anthem — not just in NH, but around the country.

Amazes me that Anthem can so successfully GAG the media from talking about it.

I will, however, keep on plugging along.

Not sure whether this also applies to N.H.

I would think, maybe even hope, so … but from what I am seeing and hearing extending the window is NOT the issue.

The issue is with folks who, like I, have already paid BUT have yet to be processed — though in my case, luckily, I have a Member ID.

I checked again this morning, a few minutes ago,
to see whether the ‘Print Temporary ID Card’
functionality has been activated.

NO.
Still Kaput.

So, what is the story here with Anthem?

Is it incompetence or is it much more Machiavellian than that?

Unlike healtcare.gov these folks are supposedly a corporate, for PROFIT, entity who have been in this racket for a very long time. I remember having this very same HMO Plan, the ‘Matthew Thorton’, in 1987 when I worked for Wang!

I find it incomprehensible that they can be this inept.

I think that they are trying to undermine Obamacare.

I don’t know who is in charge of Anthem. But, whoever its, should be fired and as is the wont in corporate America be given a MASSIVE multi-million dollar bonus for their stupidity.

Now I need to go. Need some new tires.

Thanks to the sterling efforts of ‘Lisa C.’ of the New Hampshire I finally have an Anthem membership number — though they have yet to hit my credit card with either of the two (2) payments I have made, Dec. 27 & Jan. 3, and have e-mails from them confirming my payments.

Lisa and the Manager from Anthem, Robert Murr… II, both told me that I would be able to print a TEMPORARY ID card once I created an Anthem account and logged in.

NOT so.

I was able to set up an Anthem account, as I showed on the above posts. As I also said in that post the ‘Print Temporary ID Card’ function is DISABLED.

Lisa called me again today to make sure that I had managed to create an account.
Thank YOU, Lisa. You are AMAZING.

She did not realize that the ‘temp ID’ function was disabled. She asked me to send her a screenshot so that she can take it to Anthem.

I created this screenshot for her. She has already sent it to Anthem.

Much is happening behind the scenes!

I am getting many calls and letters. I am GLAD to see that folks in Concord are taking this very seriously.

I have had calls from the Governor’s Office. They took copious notes. Thank YOU.

Senator Jane Shaheen’s office has called multiple times and also e-mailed me.

I have had a number of letters, calls and e-mails from the N.H. Insurance Department. Also from the Attorney General.

I will, of course, keep you posted.

Thanks To N.H. Insurance Department I FINALLY Get An Anthem Membership Number. Amazing!

As you know I was NOT going to take Anthem’s rejection of me lying down.

On Friday, after I made my 2nd payment, I contacted as many people as I could think of and filed two formal complaints.

One of the folks I contacted, right off the bat, was the N.H. Insurance Department — Consumer Complaints. I left a message on Friday.

This morning, around 11:15, a lovely lady called ‘Lisa’ called. She assured me that I was NOT alone. She took all my information and said that she will see if she can get any ‘joy’ from her Anthem contact. She told me to be patient. She told me I was not alone. She understood. She was very sympathetic.

She called me back within 20 minutes!

Her opening words were:
“You are the LUCKY ONE!”

She had my Anthem Membership Number!

She told me how lucky we had been to get it. She told me that she had not been able to get numbers for other people.

The number she gave me WORKS.

I was able to create an Anthem online account with that number …

I also managed to get the screenshot shown above. That shows the same number, or at least the ‘numeric’ part of it, without the 3 leading letters I was also given.

There is a PRINT temporary ID card link BUT it is temporarily disabled!

But, I am so relieved. So happy. I now have coverage. This number is good. I can use it if I were to have the heart attack I am expecting anytime now — especially with all the stress I have undergone trying to get this damn insurance.

I called Anthem again on Saturday. On hold for 96 minutes!

Got a lovely lady named ‘Diana’. She was so, so helpful.

Unlike the Indian idiot I had the misfortune of getting on Friday, she found my records! She said that I was covered THOUGH they hadn’t processed my payments. Even said that they would either return one of the payments or use it as the premium for February.

When she fully appreciated my distress she put me on hold and went and saw a manager. His name is: Robert Murr… II. He works for Wellpoint and is a Member Services manager.

He too has been outstanding. He sent me a letter saying I am covered. He has sent me 4 e-mails. I am impressed.

I also got a call from Carol Shea-Porter’s Office. I had contacted them on Friday.

The gentleman that called me, very, very nice, told me that they had sent my information to their Anthem contact on Saturday.

I also got voice-mail from Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s office. They had also looked into it.

As did my friend, N.H. State Representative Lisa DiMartino.

I am lucky that I had so many good people rally around to help me.

THANK YOU, All.

IF you are having trouble with Anthem … you need to start calling. That is my advice.
