Racism Is A Spectrum. Is Anybody At ‘0’? I Sure Am NOT!

by Anura Guruge

Racism isn’t just black & white.

Racism exists in all cultures. We have all heard, in the context of WWII, how racist the Japanese & Chinese are.

Brown folks like I can be terrible racist.

Just a couple of days ago I was in stitches reading about a famous, black West Indian cricket captain who was very aggrieved to discover that the nickname he was called by some of his Indian teammates when he was playing cricket in India was extremely racist. They, all brown (like I), was calling him a ‘blackie’. SMILE.

I am a racist — though, of course, I have a white wife (& she wasn’t the first). Actually, it is possible that I am more of a racist than my wife. She accuses me daily (if not hourly) of being judgemental.

So, what is this all about? What am I leading at.

I have, of course, been thinking. Race, quite rightly, is very much in the forefront. I have no issues with that.

Click image to access my post from yesterday.

Winston Churchill, and his statue in London, was in the news today. Got me thinking. Yes, Winston was probably slightly more of a racist than I, but by how much?

Lincoln must have had some racial biases. I am convinced that no adult can claim to be at ‘0’ when it comes to racism. I don’t think it is possible.

Most folks who knew my adoptive mother, & she knew a lot of people (given that 3,000 people attended her funeral, & that was just in Sri Lanka), would claim that she had to be the most inclusive person they had every encountered since she was her own mini-U.N. But, in private she was quite the racist. Not a nasty racist. Just a common or garden racist. Among other things she so did not want me to marry anyone white!

I think you are getting my drift.

I could be wrong, BUT I think if we can stay below the 40% mark we are doing good. Yes, of course, there will be those below 40%. I know a few that might qualify. The problem is with those that are beyond the 70% mark.

Oh, and all don’t forget that racist come in all colors.

“Happiness Starts & Ends In The Mind”.

by Anura Guruge

This was a line in the outstanding ‘Brian Banks‘ movie that I raved about a couple of days ago.

This was NOT new to I. I knew this. Probably known this much of my life.

But, not sure whether YOU realize & appreciate this. Hence, why I am sharing.

Think about it. Think about it.

Happiness, as I have said in my ‘brain’ books, is a MIND GAME.

It is ALL in the mind. Nowhere else. All in the mind.

Happiness starts & ends in the mind.

Do not forget.

Reflect on it.

Savor it.

Prayer, At Best, Is But A Form Of “Brain Meditation” — And That Is Good.

by Anura Guruge

THINK about what I just said up there (↑).

Prayer, irrespective of who you pray to (and as such its religious connotation), focuses your brain, and thereby ‘centers you’, for a brief period of time. That is MAGIC. Just that short burst of focus is a form of “Brain Meditation“.

So the reason that so many feel GOOD about praying — and do so immediately afterwards — is because they have just indulged in some “Brain Meditation“.

You can achieve the same succor by just doing any other form of “Brain Meditation“.

As those of you who know me know, I do NOT pray. I do NOT believe in prayer. I think that praying is a superstitious waste of time.

And this from one whose adoptive mother was considered by many, including lots of Western Christians, to possess SUPERNATURAL PRAYING POWERS!

Yep, my adoptive mother, in her latter years, was like a walking-talking ‘Lourdes’. People came to her, often bearing lavish gifts (mainly in the form of expensive chocolates, flowers or pastries), asking her to PRAY on their behalf. I still vividly remember a Director General of UNESCO, a very elegant (and personable) Spaniard, and his wife, coming to visit so that they could ask my mother to PRAY that their son, who was sitting an exam in a few days in order to qualify as a doctor, would do well in the exam. My mother prayed with them and continued to do so afterwards on their behalf. She prayed, unashamedly, to an eclectical pantheon of deities — at least one of them a then living human (Sai Baba). Though she would be mightily offended IF anybody said she was anything but the MOST devout of Buddhists, she when it came to praying, prayed to anyone and anybody that she believed could intercede.

She prayed to the Abrahamic God. She always had a supply of genuine Lourdes Water (which wasn’t that difficult for her given that she lived in Paris (France) and as the extremely indulged wife of a rather rich Ambassador (with multiple pensions) had the resources and contacts to get most things she wanted). She prayed to Hindu gods. She was huge Sai Baba fan who gave Sai Baba a LOT of money over the years.

She believed in prayer. She prayed a LOT. She prayed for me BUT that never worked. Maybe that is when I started to question prayer.

[And there are people, a Catholic bishop here and there and definitely a few Catholic priests, who still pray that I will find my way … ]

To me the pope praying AFTER an earthquake is just STUPID. He should have been praying BEFORE to avoid it from happening.

And PLEASE do not give me grief that you can’t pray to God to micro-manage and intercede. IF so, why the heck was the Pope leading 11,000 in prayer yesterday. Give me a break.

But, as you also know I do not interfere or object to the religious beliefs of others — even if they are totally contrary to what I believe in (which is NOTHING). So I am happy that people pray. They are indulging in some “Brain Meditation” and that is GOOD. I am all in favor.

Brain Meditation: Do YOU THINK Of Your Brain At Least 10 Times A Day?

by Anura Guruge

If NOT, why NOT?

Even putting aside the hackneyed (and actually erroneous) beliefs about how often men, especially ‘young men’, think about sex (and the appendages involved), how often do YOU think about other parts of your bodies?

Many of YOU, I know, suffer (alas) from fairly regular headaches — even those of you who are in your 20s (or younger)! That is NOT RIGHT.

I can’t remember the last time I had an headache!

I do not say that lightly and to be honest I feel BAD about saying that. But it is the trust. I can go for YEARS (if not longer) without getting an headache. And when I get one I PANIC because it is so rare and unusual. Luckily for I my rare headaches typically have to do with my very poor eyes. [Yes, life is a compromise. Life is a balance. I don’t get many headaches BUT I have very doggy eyes — or at least one eye.]

What do I attribute my lack of headaches to?

The incredible relationship I SHARE with MY BRAIN.

I start my day, before anything else, even before I open my eyes, by wishing MY BRAIN a sincere, heartfelt ‘Good Morning‘.

I talk to my brain — internally — incessantly. I ‘ping’ my brain at least 40 times a day.

That means that, on average, I consciously, commune with MY BRAIN, more than 3 times an hour during the time I am awake.

My BRAIN knows that I sincerely and truly respect it … pay homage to it.

This is how I meditate.

And PLEASE remember and respect that ALL PAIN you experience is created by YOUR brain!

I don’t think about my breathing, red balloons floating in the wind, flowers wilting or sunsets over the ocean. I just think! That is all that is required to mediate.

But, way back … 42 years ago (or more) … I made a pact with my brain. We work together. We are ONE.

So my brain knows me extremely well and I know my brain quite well.

We have a WONDERFUL, enviable relationship.

When all else is dark and bleak I have MY BRAIN — and that is ALL I need. I know my brain will get me through.

Yes, of course, I can get you there TOO.

You and I are going to do BRAIN MEDITATION.

This is how we start:

  1. First thing every morning you say “Good Morning” to your brain.

  2. At least 10 times a day, ideally 4x, 8x, 16x more times a day, YOU think of your brain. Just think of YOUR BRAIN.

More steps later. SMILE.

Meditation Is In No Way Related To Religion.

by Anura Guruge

No one religion can claim a right to meditation and meditation itself is totally independent of any and all religions. PERIOD.

All the major religions talk about some form or other of meditation. Not to do so would be incongruous, to say the least. Meditation is about mindfulness, reflection, introspection — all things that all religions want you to indulge in. But, there are millions of people who are areligious, including I, who meditate. So to claim that meditation is in someway related to or associated with religion is ridiculous. And it invariably cracks me up when ‘those from the West’ get all animated when talking about Buddhism and meditation. Ah! If only they knew. Buddhism, at its core, is about reincarnation. Meditation is but a tool to contemplate your life and future lives so you can get a grip on making sure you don’t end up getting reincarnated as a fly.

So why this sudden outburst on this issue. It has to do with the Publishing Industry codes assigned to books called “Book Industry Standards and Communications Codes” (BISAC codes). When I went to assign the BISAC for my “Brain Meditation” book I was shocked to discover that ‘meditation’ is buried deep inside the ‘Religion’ category! See below. No big deal but I do NOT consider my book with having ANYTHING to do with religion. It actually says that in the text!

Do You Say “Good Morning” To Your Brain On A Daily Basis?

by Anura Guruge

If you do, as you really should, I am SO, SO proud of YOU. Way to go.

Yes, of course, first thing every morning, even before I open my eyes I have wished my brain, my soul mate in the truest sense, a ‘Good Morning’. I have done this without fail for nearly 42 years.

This good morning ritual is a key part of my “Brain Meditation” self-help program.

Yesterday, July 27, 2016, I took the first steps in having my book on this topic, “Brain Meditation” published. It is, however, not as yet available for sale. It still needs to be proofed. But this time around I am going to use actual printed copies of the book as proofs. See below.

Independent of the book I will coach you on this invaluable self-help program via blog posts … here.

So think of this as ‘Lesson 1’ — and a very important lesson at that.

Every morning, as soon as you wake up, as you are opening your eyes, say a cheery, heartfelt “Good Morning” to your brain — in your mind!

You do not say it out loud UNLESS you want to do so. It is OK to do it all in your mind. “Good morning” from you to your brain … in your mind.

Try it. You can even do a “Good Morning”, “Good Afternoon” or “Good Evening” right now.

And yes, you have to say “Good Night” to your brain last thing at night as you close your eyes trying to fall asleep.

What can I say other than that this makes so, so much sense. It is a no-brainer so to speak though, in reality, it is ALL about brains. Only smart people buy Jaguars. Check the demographics. Those without any sense buy German. I have talked about this so often. This is brilliant. Exploit the fact that you can rely on a Jaguar owner to be sensible and smart. Goes with the image.

Kind of fits in with the theme of their current Ad.
