The opening ceremony. Doesn’t show much, alas, of the field per se.
‘York Minster‘ is one of my FAVORITE cathedrals in the whole world. Though called ‘Minster’ it is a bona fide cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of York. The ‘Minster’ refers to it having been a scholarly missionary teaching church way back. I have spent a lot of time in this Minster, sometimes going for evensong in the evening.
I left the U.K. in 1985. So, I didn’t get to visit it right after the fire.
But, I visited it often between 1989 and 1999. It was pristine by then. I don’t think the damage was as extensive as what has befallen Notre Dame. But, I could be wrong on that.
So, there is always hope and with money, perseverance and skill you can restore these old MARVELS.
It is called ‘Minster’, rather than ‘cathedral’, The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, because, wayback, it was the the main missionary church in the area.
I have visited it many, many times and spent many an enchanted hour inside. I used to do seminars in York, at a hotel walking distance from the Minister. In the evening, before dinner, I would go for Evensong, on my own, sit in the dark and listen. It was magical.
So, I wanted to share this with you for Christmas.
