Yet Another Sophie’s Choice For I — Panasonic Lumix LX100 or New ZS100.

As I have been saying for the last couple of days I am now looking for a replacement for my Sony RX100 II given that it is sold and gone.

I was planning to get a Fuji so that I could standardize on Fuji cameras. BUT that doesn’t seem as easy and practical as I had thought — and not in the budget that I was hoping. Anytime you do any serious evaluation of today’s cameras, using Web resources, you are bound to be told of the competitors. The Panasonic Lumix LX100 kept on coming up. Over the last 24 hours I, as I am wont to do when I come across a camera that looks interesting, did a deep-dive, immersion into finding out about it. Quite the camera. Just two things, other than the smaller than APS-C sensor size, that bothered me: it being a 13MP camera (despite using a 16MP sensor) and the lack of a built-in, pop-up flash. (I am a great exploitor of pop-up flashes). Though the LX100 comes with an external flash that would be an impediment. But the reviews rave about the LX100.

Then on Sunday I came across the newly announced, viz. January 5, 2016, Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100. I had not paid any attention to it since I had by then thought that I was done with buying anymore Panasonic cameras. WOW. ZS100. Basically a smaller version of the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 that has served me so well! But a 1″ sensor and I really wanted to move away from 1″. But it has a pop-up flash and is 20MP. Lens, at zoom, is a bit slow.

To make it worse, and would you believe it, they are EXACTLY the same price! $697.99.

The ZS100 will NOT be available till March 26. Can I wait that long? Seven weeks? Yes, I can, but do I want to.

Wow. This is quite a decision.

High-End Mirrorless Cameras, Year End 2015 — 1st Cut Comparison.

by Anura Guruge

I am calling it ‘1st-cut’ BECAUSE it is incomplete. I really had grand plans for this. I wanted to have columns for Image Stabilization (IS), Auto Focus points etc. I ran out of time. Plus the motivation rapidly went south when I came to the realization that I have my heart and mind set on Fuji X-T1 (or T2 if there is going to be one). So it was ‘why spend more time (which I am in such short supply of’ when I already knew what I planned to get.

Plus now with my Sony RX100 II sold (and already more than halfway to California (via USPS)) what I have to do is determine what high-end, mirrorless compact I need to get as my second camera. So I need to put together a spreadsheet for that. But I enjoy it.

Anyway I wanted to share this because some of you will find it useful.

Another comparison I did in November 2015 of the ‘Camera Labs’ point-and-shoot recommendation.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 With M-Zuiko 14-42 mm Lens For $500 Is Beyond Tempting.

by Anura Guruge

As I have mentioned before I do subscribe to the Olympus newsletter and Deanna currently does own a point-and-shoot Olympus, the Olympus Stylus SZ-16.

And e-mail, again offering the very capable OM-D E-M10 with 14-42 Lens at $499.99 arrived in my inbox the very day I sold my Sony RX100 II — and as such was in the market for a compact camera to augment my main Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 (until I move up to a Fuji X-T1 (or T2 if there is going to be one). This is very tempting.

I only have two concerns right now: 1) Is it too big, especially the lens (despite being a ‘pancake’) sticking out? and 2) Can I live with a 42mm max. zoom when I used to get infuriated with the 100mm zoom on the Sony. Decisions, decisions. But I love it.

Olympus Is Sharing Some Rather Special Winter Scenes Shot With OM-D Cameras.

I like Olympus cameras (and Deanna has one). I am on their mailing list and enjoy seeing what they have to say. Next to Fuji, Olympus now is my next preferred camera choice and I am CURRENTLY in a bind now that I sold my Sony RX100 II. Should I get a Fuji or Olympus to replace that. Not easy. Down the road, before September, I will most likely get a Fuji X-T1 (or a X-T2 if they ever get around to announcing one) as my MAIN camera replacing the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. But should I get an Olympus has my ‘small’ camera. These are THE problems that beset my life. Yes, I am fully aware that I am very lucky as such.

I Sold My Sony RX100 MkII On eBay For A Decent Price.

by Anura Guruge

sonysoldebayfeb4

I listed it as a 5-day auction, finishing around 2:30pm on Thursday, February 4, 2016 — Sri Lanka Independence Day.

I offered it to you folks for $320. I listed it on eBay with a start price of $305 & $14.75 for shipping (and shipping with $300 insurance came to $16.60).

Some 120 odd people (and some were very odd indeed) looked at it (per eBay statistics) and by Thursday morning 11 were watching it. But no bids. Then the first bid came in from a first time eBay buyer — with ‘0’ feedback. That scared me. Didn’t like the idea of shipping a $350 camera to a person unknown to eBay. I was even thinking of refusing to ship if that person won. Well all the action was in the last few minutes! I guess this was always the case with eBay. The new buyer tried valiantly but was beaten out much to my relief.

The lady who bought it, from California, paid at once. That is always encouraging. I did the shipping label through PayPal. PayPal likes it — and I am an eBay & PayPal shareholder. So I have to support these companies. I am happy. I would rather have sold it locally. Something else that was nice and PayPal told me this. Camera in its box fits in, with tons of space to spare, in a USPS 2-day, Flat-Rate Medium Size box — and the weight limit is 70 pounds. The camera and the book was less than 2 pounds. So this was easy. I am even sending her the printed manuals though I did not include them in the eBay listing. Might as well.

Now come the ‘fun’ part. Looking for a NEW camera. My 5th in since September 2015! I told you. This is why I avoided cameras for 30 years. I like them too much. REALLY going to try to standardize on Fuji. Fuji and I are very compatible — emphasis on still photography rather than video and LOTS of control wheels/buttons. Stay tuned.

Buydig.com (My Preferred Camera Store) NO LONGER Selling ‘New’ Fuji Cameras!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and stare at in disbelief. buydig.com

As I have made very plain I see Fuji figuring prominently in my photographic future. Sometime this year a Fuji X-T1 (if a X-T2 has not been announced) will replace my much liked Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 as my main camera. Now that I am actively trying to part with my 3-month old backup camera, the Sony RX100 Mk II I have also been looking at a smaller Fuji as a backup, possibly in the X-E2(S) range. [More this week on the stupidity in the pricing of the X-E2s (the newer camera available in Feb. 2016) and the OLD X-E2, where the new camera is cheaper than the old.]

Since I, for the last 6 months, have tended to buy electronics from BuyDig.com rather than Amazon (though I am an Amazon shareholder and have Amazon Prime), I went over to BuyDig to check prices. I first thought I was missing something. It kept on saying they only had 4 Fuji cameras — those shown above. No X-T1, No X-Pro2, No X-E2 etc.

So I called and got my friend, chief salesman, cousin of the owner and entertainer-in-charge — the aptly named Ray Messiah. It is always fun to talk to THE MESSIAH. He confirmed that they don’t sell many Fujis and that he is not surprised that they don’t list any of the new Fujis. SHAME.

Of course I can get Fujis from Amazon or for that matter Cameta Cameras (who are also immaculate thought they do not, as far as I know, have their own Messiah).

Just wanted to share this. Not good when one of the leading digital online retailers (and that is what the ‘Dig’ indicates — digital) stop selling Fuji.
