‘Black Moon’ Today, July 31, 2019, & How It Differs From A ‘Blue Moon’.

by Anura Guruge

The Key Difference:

Black Moon has to be a NEW Moon.

Blue Moon has to a FULL Moon.

Other than that they both refer to an ‘EXTRA’ moon in a given ‘month’.

Blue Moon‘ can mean one of two things:

1. Second full moon within the same calendar month.

2. Third full moon during an astronomical season that has four full moons; an astronomical season in this context being the 3-month period between an equinox and a solstice, e.g., 3-months between the March Spring Equinox and the June Summer Solstice.

Black Moon‘, DITTO, but when it applies to a NEW MOON.

So, it means:

1. Second NEW moon within the same calendar month — as is the case this month, i.e., July 2019.

2. Third NEW moon during an astronomical season that has four full moons; an astronomical season in this context being the 3-month period between an equinox and a solstice, e.g., 3-months between the March Spring Equinox and the June Summer Solstice.

Both are rare events.

Furthermore, today’s Black Moon is a Supermoon — i.e., it is closer to Earth than normal.

I found them a few days ago when I was researching camera rentals — in particular Fujis.

Cheaper than renting from Fujifilm USA but I don’t think they offer as many models. I plan to try them out soon.

Can get a 5% discount code for the first rental by signing up for their newsletter. That was easy enough.

The notion of renting cameras is really beginning to appeal to me. I am now thinking of renting a X-T1 for a week when we next go to Acadia National Park. It will be the perfect way for me to try out a X-T1 ahead of the X-T2 becoming available — most likely in August or September of this year.

I have found another place to rent Fujis — which might be a tad cheaper. But the above is directly from Fuji USA. So there is, in theory, some guarantee of satisfaction, of not quality. I will keep you appraised.

Renting A Fuji X-Pro2 (Body) From Fujifilm U.S. For 28 Days Costs $275.

by Anura Guruge

I had NO idea how much renting a camera would be. Suffice to say I have never done it. So I had no clue or expectations. Kind of knew, viscerally, that it would not be ‘cheap’.

Called Fujifilm, U.S., in Edison, NJ, on their standard 1-800-800-3854 phone number and punched ‘3’ for ‘Pro Rental’. An extremely pleasant and helpful lady, ‘Brittany’, answered on the second ring.

They have pre-set time periods like 28 days, 50 days etc.

28 days for the X-Pro2 was $275.

I have to say that was LESS than I had expected. I am NOT considering renting a X-Pro2 and told her that upfront. As always there was ‘method to my madness’.

I was using the X-Pro2 to determine some parameters.

Remember that my dream camera, the X-T2, is said to be announced this week! SMILE.

Funnily enough ‘Brittany’ claims that she had not even heard that there was a X-T2 coming!

She has 2 to 3 X-Pro2s in stock and I could rent one today.

$275 is 16% of the list price — for a month. 50 days was in the $420 mark (though I wasn’t paying much attention to that).

But it has got me thinking.

I love to lease cars. I wonder IF I can start LEASING cameras. I used to be very good friends, 20-years ago, in Chicago, with a father/son team that owned a very successful, multimillion dollar leasing company out of Chicago. They used me as a business consultant on networking stuff. As was the norm those days we did all of our business discussions over a meal. One night they invited me to dinner at a ‘private club’ at the legendary ‘Drake Hotel‘ in Chicago. It was a revelation to I. The club with its very post dining room was hidden behind a wall. No sign, whatsoever, from outside. I had, as I had been told, gone to the front desk to ask to be taken to the club. They opened this wall to let me in! Anywho … They used to tell me this all the time: ‘any item, as long as it has a residual value, can be leased’. They, those days, used to lease Rolex watches and yachts.

Ah! If I can only get them to lease me cameras. That would work out.

To be fair a ‘Blue Moon‘ can mean one of three things:

1. Second full moon within the same calendar month.

2. Third full moon during an astronomical season that has four full moons; an astronomical season in this context being the 3-month period between an equinox and a solstice, e.g., 3-months between the March Spring Equinox and the June Summer Solstice.

3. When the moon, due to atmospherical conditions, appears blue.

All three are RARE events. An astronomical season is but three months. So to get 4 full moons does not happen that often. DITTO for two full moons in the same month and ‘red’, ‘orange’, ‘silver’ and ‘gray’ moons are much more common that blue-tinted moons.

So the phrase, ‘Blue Moon’, as I talked about in this post, is also used to mean something that happens rarely.

The last two full moons in a month happened in September 2012. Nearly 3 years ago.

Friday’s July 31, 2015 Blue Moon is the last, for us in EASTERN U.S. till beyond 2020. Yes, that is it for over 5 years. Time zones to the WEST of us will have them in May 2016, May 2018 and October 2020. But not in Eastern U.S. All has to do with the timing of the 2nd full moon.

Third full moon in an astronomical season will happen May 2016, May 2019, August 2021 and August 2024.

Plus, July 31, 2015 is “National Orgasm Day“!

It has to the first time NOD has happened in a Blue Moon. Wow.

Well, just past midnight, with another chapter of the latest book done and dusted I decided to check whether ‘Jet.com‘ was online — as it was supposed to be.

It was. Though I had not received my promised e-mail giving me 3-months free membership that offer was available to all — as an introductory inducement. Jet interests me on multiple fronts. We buy a fair amount of stuff from Amazon. At a minimum we get 3 deliveries a month from Amazon, and often 3 deliveries a week. So if I can really save 10% to 15% that could start adding up. Plus I own a couple of shares of Amazon (here and there) and I write a LOT of Amazon options — and I mean A LOT! So anything that can influence AMZN stock prices has my undivided attention.

I started by checking on cameras since that would give me a true oranges-to-oranges comparison. First thing I discovered and I suspected that this would be the case. Selection is VERY LIMITED. Very limited. So that is a bummer. Unless this gets better Jet will never really challenge AMZN.

So lets start with this Fuji camera.

jetfuji

It is $799 with Prime at Amazon & $798 .95 (with free shipping) at Buydig.com. That is one heck of a SERIOUS discount — and in this case they don’t even show the Amazon equivalent. This could make a difference. If I am buying a $800 camera a $47 discount CANNOT be sneezed at.

So here is another, this one having the comparison pre-listed to make it easy.

jetolympus
$23.94 off a $399 camera. A 6% discount. NOT the 10% to 15% promised BUT $23.94 is worth saving.

And then this and I am in the market for one of these (to store all the pictures that we take with about 6 different devices in ONE PLACE).

jetwd
That they only carry, as yet, a limited selection of products is a definite drawback. But they will be definite bad news for Buydig.com. I feel bad for them since they try hard.

Well over the coming weeks I will always check Jet before I buy anything from Amazon. But as an AMZN shareholder I am not too worried right this minute. That could change. Amazon might start discounting their products!

Today Is The Infamous ‘Ides Of March’, Middle Of March, March 15.

Dec2013x125

.
by
Anura Guruge

A Roman mosaic for March, which appears top right in the graphic — March the first month of the Roman year BECAUSE that was the month the Roman armies would start to ‘march’ after camping for the winter! Yes march = March. Pretty neat stuff.

Ides of March‘, like so many other English phrases [e.g., ‘forgone conclusion‘, ‘a rose by any other name …’, ‘a sea change‘, ‘Et tu Bruté’], is common currency because it appeared in a Shakespeare play, in this case ‘Julius Caesar‘ — in the warning given to the dictator (but never Emperor) by a female soothsayer: ‘beware of the ides of March’. It just meant the middle of the month.

The early Roman calendar, c. 750 BCE, thought to be a lunar-based, had three fixed points for each month: Kalendae (Kalends), Nonae (Nones) & Idus (Ides).

Kalends (from which we got ‘calendar’) was the first day of the month.

Nones, thought to represent the half-moon, fell on the 5th or 7th of a month and was the 8th day BEFORE the ides!

Ides, thought to represent the full moon, fell on the 13th day of months with 29 days, and on the 15th day of months with 31 days, i.e., March, May, July & October.

The Romans, a strange bunch as you can tell from their numerals and togas, counted backwards from these three points — in the case of Kalends using the first day of the next month!

So to be fair, Ides was the easiest of days to work out, because it was either the 13 or the 15 depending on the Month.

So that is how we get the Ides of March.

But, in reality every month as Ides.

Yes, calendars are another topic that fascinates me and whenever I have sometime I learn about calendars. There is however a ton to learn, just even about the ‘Roman’ calendar we use — though I am slightly conversant with the Buddhist and Sinhalese calendars as well. The Sinhalese New Year, which falls on the same day each year is on April 14.

The most famous thing to have happened on an Ides of March. It changed the course and complexion of world history. The world would have been very different if Julius had ruled for another 20 years, as he easily could have.
