Kind of funny. I wrote about this ascent & the lack of a picture of Edmund Hillary at the summit just 10-days ago.

I always remember that it was in 1953 since that was the year I was born. But, I was born in September. So, this happened just before I was born.

The key here is that we all now appreciate that this was the 1st CONFIRMED ascent. That is good. We might still get proof that George Mallory, in 1924, beat them to it.

It is also good that more & more places, like Wikipedia, have started listing Sherpa Tenzing Norgay AHEAD of New Zealander, Edmund Hillary. As Hillary himself, albeit quite late in his life, has confirmed Tenzing was LEADING when they reached the summit. Plus, we only have a picture of Tenzing at the summit.

Avid ‘Mount Everest’ Buff For 25-Years But I Never Realized That There Is No Picture Of ‘Hillary’ On Summit!

From “Tenzin’s” 1958 book, which I have also had most of my life.

I am very familiar with this picture. From John Hunt’s book (above).

I also have this book. No pictures of the summit at all, at all! SMILE.

With the iconic photograph, shown at top, you can’t really tell who is under all that protective gear. So, it is easy to kind of think it is Hillary. It is NOT. It is Tenzing. The captions clearly state that. It is just that we tend to ind of forget that.

I was listening to this book (which is outstanding), i.e., Napoleon’s Hemorrhoids: And Other Small Events that Changed History, when this was mentioned, viz., there is NO photograph of Hillary at the summit. Just of Tenzing. I had to come home & check — twice. Wow.

Hillary has explained why there is no photo & it is quite amazing & amusing. Tenzing had never used a camera & ‘the summit of Everest was no place to give him his first lesson’! Classic. A beauty.

We even now know, decades later, that Tenzing leading, so he was the first of the two to step on to the summit. I love this stuff.

Hope you found this interesting.

Per My Garmin Fenix 5 Plus I Climb More Floors Than 99% Of ‘Other Users’ — 52 Floors A Day.

102 ‘floors’ climbed on some days.

I live in a 4-story house, which is on the side of 1,450′ mountain. So, it is NOT difficult for I to cover a fair chunk of elevation per day. Plus, I have ALWAYS liked to climb stairs. Whenever possible I will opt to climb stairs than take an escalator or elevator — and it doesn’t matter if I am carrying stuff.

That I am in the 99% percentile, for my age, viz., 65-69, makes me happy. And I get accused that all I do is sit in front of a PC! Well, it can’t be bad … right? If all I do is sit in front of a computer and also manage to average 52 floors climbed a day.

In our house my ‘office’, where I spent much of the day, is on the 4th floor. The family TV room, plus the utility room which has my exercise clothes, are on the bottom floor. So I, go up and down 3 flights of stairs multiple times a day. So, even on the days I do not go running I end up covering well in excess of 10 floors a day.

1,467 floors climbed in a month. Basically, 14,670′. Kind of halfway up Mount Everest.

Yes, I know that there are others that do more than this — but also those that do less.

Enjoy. Happy Holidays. If you are around, I will always be happy to climb stairs with you or hike up a mountain.

Edmund Hillary, One Of The First Known To Conquer Mount Everest, Was Born This Day 98-Years Ago; July 20, 1919.

As a Mount Everest buff of long standing, with quite a decent library of historic books on the ‘Mount’, Sir Edmund Hillary has been a personal hero as far as I can remember — he and Tenzing Norgay (another hero) having conquered Everest just over 3 months ahead of my birth. Plus, Hillary, as a New Zealander, was a member of our glorious British Commonwealth and was listening to ‘Radio Ceylon‘ on top of Everest the night before they made it to the top.

I know enough of the lore to appreciate that we still have a BIG question mark as to whether George Mallory and/or Andrew Irvine managed to make it to the top in 1924 — before perishing on the mountain. And I also will not try to decide whether it was Hillary or Tenzing that reached the top first.

I am, and have been for decades, a Mount Everest buff.

I have quite a collection of historic books on Everest and have read all of them and many more.

I have savored this 1953 ascent. That was the year I was born. So, some significance.

Today MIGHT Be Everest Conqueror Tenzing Norgay’s Birthday — BUT He Chose It To Be May 29, 1914.

As a Mount Everest NUT since I was a teenager, Tenzing Norgay has been one of my abiding heroes. I think he was quite the man — exemplary.

After considerable pondering and looking at the facts I also believe that he probably reached the peak ahead of Edmund Hillary — though that is now essentially a moot point.

I will have to remember to commemorate his birthday on May 29. So, we think he was born 103 years ago.

The First Flight Over Mount Everest Took Place This Day 84-Years Ago, April 3, 1933 — Led By The British ‘Duke Of Hamilton’.

by Anura Guruge

Also known as the Marquess of Douglas and Clydesdale. Interesting person. Love his name with the double ‘Douglas’. Wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Douglas-Hamilton,_14th_Duke_of_Hamilton

Mount Everest was very much a part of the ‘British Raj‘ and, of course, in the 1930s, nearly all of the Everest related exploits were invariably British led. And that, of course, continued into the 1950s with the British-led conquest of Everest.

I happened to catch this on an overseas news feed over the weekend. I was amazed. I had never heard of it! Google it. Lots of stories. Ramifications could be quite serious. Hence why I am bringing it to your attention.

Mount Everest Was Not Summited At All In 2015!

I was shocked when I saw this news story yesterday during my daily, near religious reading of the U.K. “Daily Mail“.

As far as I was concerned summiting Everest had become somewhat of a joke — with all the fixed ladders, ropes and carved in steps, not to mention the armies of professional guides at hand, making it such that it was like taking a crowded elevator.

Per the Guinness Book of World Records 234 climbers summited Everest in ONE DAY in 2012! That, of course, is a record! The total for 2012, however, is said to have been 547. So 43% of those that summited in 2012 did it in one day. It must have been sure packed up at the top.

658 summited in 2013, but only 106 in 2014, though that included a 13-year old girl, the youngest female to do so.

From what I can see Everest has been KNOWN to have been summited 6,977 times.

Of course it was the earthquakes in 2015 that precluded Everest being climbed all the way to the top. I don’t think it was a bad thing. They need to rethink the granting of climbing permits and tourists rights. Yes, Nepal needs the money but it would be such a shame to devalue and demean the Everest experience and relevance.
