When A Tree Decides It Wants Antlers.

by Anura Guruge

You have to admit that they really do look like stag antlers. I saw this tree, on Friday, in Alton. I have walked by this tree many times BUT had never noticed this configuration. I just wanted to share it with you. Enjoy.

If you look you will see multiple faces in there. IF you are a connoisseur you will see the resemblance to Rodin’sBurghers of Calais“. SMILE.

Nature Does A Busted Knee Joint.

Looked pretty good to I. I spent enough time seated in doctors’ offices last year looking at pictures & models of busted knees in that I had busted my quad tendon. This sure reminded me of the models I had seen — though this was larger & more colorful.

Nature Does Freud — An Inevitable Theme Or Is It A Refrain?

Words will ONLY get me into trouble. One of the joys of getting older is that one has learnt, at long last, to keep their mouths shut. Maybe I shouldn’t have even said that. I know some will be smirking already. SMILE.

Nature Does Freud! (Smile)

Growing up in Ceylon, half a century ago, I was familiar with a cute saying: “those that know, know“!

It was used by meat sellers when they were selling PORK to Muslims. They would not advertise the pork as pork since that would make it difficult for the Muslims to buy it openly.

So, they left the pork unlabelled & told people who asked: “those that know, know“.

Muslims knew it was pork & they could buy it without the word pork ever coming up or getting mentioned.

So ….

Those that know, know“.

I have always told you that I have an irrelevant & irreverent (British) sense of humor. SMILE.

We stopped here for lunch, on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, after our very rewarding visit to the nearby ‘Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum‘.

A great place. Very welcoming, airy and cozy feel. Outgoing staff. Extremely friendly patrons. Delightful, satisfying food — and ‘yes’ their 6oz burger is very, very good.

We had a wonderful time. Met some interesting folks.

They don’t take credit cards — and I will readily admit that that irks I. This is now an unnecessary affectation. Not cute, anymore. Jack up the prices or even say 10% surcharge for using credit cards. But, please take my damn card. Yes, they have an ATM on site which charged me $5 to withdraw $40 — though it claims that it only charges $2.50. Cute. Just on principle I called up my bank and had the extra $2.50 reversed! SMILE. Principle. I would have paid $5 if that is what it said. But, do NOT tell me $2.50 and then charge me $5.00. Yes, making the call cost me more than $2.50 BUT it was worth it.

They also don’t have Wi-Fi. I am cool with that. They have a sign saying ‘No Wi-Fi, make believe it is 1985 and talk with each other‘ (or similar). I actually agree with that. But, they, kind of twoface on this DO NOT tell people to NOT use their damn cell phones. One gentleman in particular, much to my amusement and delight, conducted a rather private phone call, to no doubt a client of his, discussing some sensitive legal matters. I knew what they were talking about. Made my day. It was like being in a TV show. But, this did not detract from the meal.

Yes, most likely will go back. Would love to hear more phone calls like that. Well, you too might want to go to check out the burger and see what phone calls you can hear. Try not to use the ATM. SMILE. There is a Market Basket 4-miles down the road. You can withdraw money from them for ‘free’ (which is what I normally do). SMILE.

Anywho … It was good.

Saw this on my hike of ‘Mount Kearsarge‘ today. You couldn’t miss it. Loved how iron pigment leached out had colored the eyes.

What do YOU think?

I was pretty impressed.

We have watched two episodes of Discovery Channel’s ‘North America’ so far. They were, indubitably, good. Definitely 4th generation of nature programs, 2nd gen. in terms of HD exploitation — if you start with David Attenborough incomparable and seminal Life On Earthon BBC in the 1970s as the first generation of this genre. See my ‘Africa’ post for more on ‘Life On Earth‘ if you are not familiar with this groundbreaking series.

I could be mistaken, but I do not think that this series, especially when it comes to storylines, narration, close-ups and ingenuity, is as good as ‘Africa’ which really was breathtakingly amazing. Maybe I got slightly spoilt by having watched all the episodes of ‘Africa’. We are still going to watch all of this series, it is too good to pass by.

Still a definite two-thumbs up. Kids should love it. Enjoy. I have already set the DVR to record this week’s episode (tonight, I think).
