Selfies My Way — The Nepali Look, April 15, 2020.

Yes, you are free to steal these pictures.

Bought this Nepali waistcoat, over a month ago, when we were in New Port, Rhode Island. There was a real cool Nepali shop on Thames St.

This was the first time I got to wear. I like it — and that is all that matters. As some of you know, I really do NOT care what others think of I. SMILE.

I wanted to share it with you. Perfect for today. I like waistcoats. I think this one will get a fair amount of use over the next few weeks. SMILE.

Solar Powered Nepalese Prayer Wheel — V. Cute, Couldn’t Resist.

by Anura Guruge

Teischan’s attending a one-week Summer ‘Art Camp’ at ‘Kimball Jenkins‘ in Concord, and rather than coming home after dropping her off, I have opted to spend 6-hours a day in Concord and explore. It has been a blast. Found all sorts of neat places and met some interesting people (as is my wont).

Today, I stopped at the ‘Concord Mart’ at N. Main St., an ‘International Grocery Store‘, to see what they have. Run by a Nepali gentleman. We got talking. I spotted this v. neat prayer wheel he had by his cash register. It was awfully cute. I wanted one. I like solar powered ‘toys’ and this was one of the nicest I have seen.

I got one. SMILE. It wasn’t $1! SMILE.

IF you want one too, let me know. I think I can get YOU one too.

Always Strikes Me As Strange That Popes Can’t Protect Italy From Earthquakes.

The OFFICIAL Titles Held By Pope Francis.

One of them is ‘Vicar of Jesus Christ’.

To I, it just seems strange — incongruous.

All this praying, Masses and whatever.

Why can’t they keep Earthquakes away from ‘home’.

Shouldn’t God be using them to RATTLE the heathens rather than hurt the poor, long-suffering Italian Catholics?
(And yes, of course, I have not forgotten Japan, China, Nepal and Turkey.)

Just wondering. Just asking.

I wish I had the answer.

The Two Buddhist Participants In Muhammad Ali’s Inter-Faith Funeral Service.

by Anura Guruge

Their names are Venerable Utsumi and Sister Denise (who I think is the one on the right in the YouTube video below).

The Sister by definition is not a Buddhist monk. She would be the equivalent of a nun. Not sure whether the other one is a bona fide monk. He is not dressed in the dark saffron robes we normally associate with Buddhist monks.

I could be wrong but I think these two represent Nepalese, Tibetan or Bhutan Buddhism — which is not mainstream Theravada or Mahāyāna Buddhism (my background and expertise being in the former, Sri Lanka considered the spiritual home for that school). I haven’t, as yet, been able to find anything more about these two other than that they participated in Ali’s funeral! IF you can help me here I will be most grateful. [Thanks, in advance.]

Increasingly folks in the U.S. are gravitating towards and identifying with Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhism, and creating the impression that this school represents most Buddhist worldwide. Not so. I happened to look up Buddhist temples in Louisville and discovered that they are all Tibetan-centric. C’est la vie.

One thing ironic that Ali, who is said to have arranged how this service was to conducted, may have overlooked. Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhist have zero-experience dealing with Muslims! Not so if he turned to Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka. Just something to think about.

Yet AGAIN very strange coverage by Google. Of course it makes sense that this Google Doodle

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 In Canada started on June 5, 2015. THIS was the Google Doodle that Google did for that, on June 5, 2015 — BUT did NOT display in the U.S.! It was shown in Canada, Mexico, U.K., Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Greece, South Africa, Australia etc.

They have repurposed it for the first U.S. Match. Interesting. One of the few Google Doodle’s that doesn’t have the word ‘Google’ in it — but funnily enough there is NO mistaking ‘Google’ within it! Clever. Also no description as to how the Doodle came to be.

Note that it says ‘prayers to Buddha‘.

Yes, a lot of people, not too brightly pray to Buddha. Sadly that has to be a very pointless task. The Buddha, by his own words, and by the fundamental tenets of Buddhism, NO LONGER EXISTS.

The Buddha reached Nirvana. It basically means that his soul ceased to exist. His soul was blown out like a candle.

The Buddha attaining Niravana is the Buddhist equivalent to the resurrection. It is the crux of the belief.

So, as I always ask, how can YOU pray to somebody who does NOT exist. Yes, that raises other questions about other religions BUT, those who pray do so BECAUSE they are 1,000%+ convinced that there is somebody UP THERE. The Buddha is NOT up there. Take my word on that. I know. I know my Buddhism.

I explained this all before in this July 3, 2014 post. Here is a snippet from that post.

In theory Buddhist should NOT pray! They have nobody to pray to. I kind of explained it here. Yes, Buddhist pray. The family that adopted me were BIG into prayer. But they prayed to the Hindu gods and sometimes even to the Christian God. So that is the flip of what Rowan is doing. Devout Buddhist praying to Christ because the Buddha is unavailable to answer prayer.”

Also please check out this post, from November 19, 2012,
which YET AGAIN is on this very topic.

This Google Doodle is restricted to Nepal.

As the above explanation points out, in paragraph two, the recent devastating earthquakes played in role in the creation of this Doodle — the FIRST, ever, for Nepal. Nice. Hopefully they will get more in the years to come.

The “prayers to Buddha” mentioned towards the bottom of Google’s 3rd paragraph is a misconception!

Google ‘refugees’, ‘Myanmar’ or ‘Burmese’ for many, many other articles.

I have over the last year repeatedly spoken out against the misguided, extremely insecure extremist Buddhists in Sri Lanka. The extremist Buddhists in Burma, the inspiration for what is taking place in Sri Lanka, are even worse!

There is hardly any coverage of what is taking place in Myanmar (Burma) these days — with the extremist Buddhists, just like in Sri Lanka, trying to purge the minorities.

In the last 48 hours I have seen headlines talking about “SAVAGE Buddhists”! That a decade ago would have been an oxymoron.

Savage Buddhists?

How could that be. It is a religion of compassion. A religion of tolerance.

I am NOT a Buddhist. But I grew up in an extremely activist Buddhist household. My adopted father, to my shame, became an extremist Buddhist (albeit in his old age) — as are many of my cousins (though age alone cannot be used as an excuse by them).

Growing up Buddhist I thought that tolerance was a virtue. Despite ardency of the Buddhism in our household we had Christians in the family and our BEST friends were Christians and Muslims. This is why extreme Buddhism in Sri Lanka, to me, makes NO SENSE. My adopted father’s BEST FRIEND was Senator Abdul Aziz (who at the time was one of the richest men in Ceylon). Because of kidnapping fears (mainly from the Catholics) I was ONLY allowed to approach two cars, after school, at 1pm — IF my father couldn’t be there because he had been detained at work. One was Uncle Amarasinghe’s car (and he was somebody that my father had gone to school with) and the other was Senator Aziz’s black Peugeot (driven by his wonderful driver). So 40 years hence when I see my adopted father supporting extreme Buddhist monks who advocate violence against Muslims it confuses me.

I have NO patience for extremist Buddhists.

I have already put forth my solution to curb some of their vigor. At a MINIMUM Pakistan, Bangladesh and UAE should REFUSE to play cricket against Sri Lanka. Ideally the cricketing world should do to Sri Lanka what they did to South Africa for ’20’ years. Boycott them until they renounce Buddhist apartheid.

This persecution of non-Buddhists by Buddhists has to stop — Worldwide. It is Wrong. What would the Buddha Say? He was not perfect, BUT I am sure of one thing about him — he would NOT have condoned violence. The notion of ‘savage Buddhists’ would have appalled him. So IF you are a Buddhist cut out this nonsense, not for you, not for me — but for the sake of the Buddha.
