Where Did The British Surname ‘Pope’ Come From — As In New Test Cricketer, Ollie Pope.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, of course, I have heard the NAME ‘Pope’ before BUT it was the new, 20-year old English cricketer, Ollie Pope, who made his Test debut against India yesterday that got me thinking.

Yes, there were popes that were married, and yes, there were popes that fathered children. But, I doubted whether any of those would have carried a surname ‘Pope’.

Plus, ‘Popes’ in very Anglican Britain.

So, I had to go looking. Appears it was a ‘not too nice’ nickname that stuck! Yikes. Indicated a pompous person that acted like a pope.

Yes, a possibility, that it might relate to those with a church, in particular bishopric, connection. But, the consensus is that it was most likely a nickname to start with. How a nickname eventually becomes a family name is a whole another conundrum.

Just two days, after watching the highlights of the Indians winning the 2nd ODI against Australia, I said that ‘they’, i.e., the Indians, looked invincible.

Then, a couple of hours ago, I watched the 3rd ODI. I thought Aaron Finch’s return, and his magnificent 124, had turned the corner for Steve Smith and Australia. Yes, the middle order dissapointed, but 293 wasn’t too bad of a total.

India just cruised to victory. Yes, there was a few tense moments BUT Dhoni hardly had to face a ball. Hardik Pandya is one heck of a cricketer. He is exciting to watch, batting, bowling or fielding. Can you imagine what his nickname will be in dressing rooms in Australia, England and New Zealand. As far as nicknames go it would not be one that is HARD to take!

What a bloody team. I am in AWE. Indians must be SO happy.

‘Caligula’ was a nickname — meaning ‘little (soldier’s) boot’. His real name was Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus. He was well connected at birth. Hence his ascendency.

He was only emperor for 3 years and 10 months. He has assassinated when just 28 years old.

He has been described as being crazy.

The blood seen dripping from his eyes is to symbolize his deadly vision for Rome and the Empire.
