The JUST Announced Sony RX10 III With 600mm Zoom Is Pretty Darn Impressive.

How ‘snapsort.com’ ranked my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 against the Sony RX10 II
last September.

How I ended up getting the ill-fated Sony a77 II instead of a Sony RX10 II.

In August 2015 I was nearly convinced that the then newly announced Sony RX10 II would be my next camera — my step up from my refurbished Canon T3i. Two things bothered me, the 200mm max. zoom and the 1″ sensor — especially at the then $1,298 price. I think I might have overlooked the 1″ sensor if it had at least a 400mm zoom. I ended up getting a Sony a77 II and that did not work out too well and I ended up returning it within the month. I got my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, with its 1″ sensor, as a (max.) 1-year compromise until I had more time to work out what next? The Lumix FZ1000 has served me well.

And now the RX10 III. I don’t need 600mm zoom BUT it would be nice. SMILE. Comparing the specs. the 600mm zoom is the one overriding advantage of the RX10 III over the FZ1000. Yes, the RX10 III being two younger will have better technology all around. But $1,500 is a lot for a fixed-lens 1″ sensor camera. BUT I will have to give it some serious thought. Did anybody notice that the lens is NO LONGER constant f/2.8 and instead stops down to f/4.0 at zoom (which is not half bad at 600m)?

Panasonic could counter with a 600mm zoom with a Micro Four-Thirds. I would get that in a heartbeat. Maybe that is the rumored Lumix LX200. Things are getting interesting.

Stay tuned. My current plan, of course, is to get the Fuji X-T2 when it is available.
