Got My Garmin Vivoactive 3 (Gunmetal), Discounted & Early — But Was An ABSOLUTE PAIN To Pair With My Android 7.0 Tablet!

by Anura Guruge

So, I finally got IT — after 38-days of not having a Garmin Vivoactive on my wrist.

I, of course, ordered it through Amazon BUT did not get one fulfilled by Amazon — because their promised delivery was for this coming Monday, November 20, 2017.

I had been keeping an eye on these ‘small’ Garmin distributors who kept on claiming they could get me a Gunmetal model earlier. The latest to do so was ‘Heart Rate Monitors USA‘ — a small 14-person company in Pennsylvania.

On Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, having watched their listing for 24-hours, I called them up. Spoke to a lady called ‘Amy’. She seemed genuine enough and she inspired confidence. So, I placed an order — WITHOUT cancelling my prior order which was NOT due to ship till today.

Heart Rate Monitors USA shipped out the unit — to UPS — within 4 hours. Yes, I was monitoring (every couple of hours). {Smile}

I got it yesterday, Thursday, November 16, 2017 — Beaujolais Nouveau Day.

I also got it for $310 — rather than the $330 I was being charged by Amazon.

I like it. Nice and light and looks OK.

But, the JOY of getting it was MARRED by the horrendous problems I had trying to PAIR IT with my 6-month old, ASUS ZenPad 10.1″ running Android 7.0. Now I had had my old Garmin Vivoactive HR paired with this tablet (albeit with erratic syncing) and had, after 9 or 10 attempts, managed to pair my short lived Garmin Forerunner 235 with it.

With the Vivoactive 3 I just could NOT get it to PAIR. I would type in the 6-digit pairing code and something would go WRONG or NOTHING would happen.

Called up Garmin support and was with them for nearly 50 minutes. They admitted that they have NEVER tested pairings with Tablets. Just phones. Which is why they call it ‘Pair With Phone’.

It paired, first time, with an old ASUS phone. I do not have a working smartphone. I prefer a 10″ tablet.

I was SO DISGUSTED I set out to return it! Even reboxed it — with a printed return label.

Then I relented. I decided to get a phone — most likely a Google Pixel XL, since my main requirement is a decent camera to use at events (e.g., concerts). So, I started looking for phones.

Also read some posts about Bluetooth. Once suggested STOPPING the Bluetooth service on Android and starting it again. Did that around midnight. Then, two attempts later it PAIRED!

I know I spent close to 2.25 hours trying to get it to pair — and MAYBE 22 (or more) attempts.

That is NOT right.

So, that spoiled the whole experience. I am still recovering!

Garmin Vivoactive 3: Price Reduction On ALL Models Precipitated By Delays To Slate – Gunmetal Version.

by Anura Guruge

All this as of Tuesday, November 14, 2017.

Click on images to ENLARGE them.

Current Pricing At Amazon; $279 for the ugly models.

All because the Slate — Gunmetal is still back-ordered!

But Amazon, per PHONE CALL, insists that I will get mine
on November 20, 2017.

There will be hell to pay if I don’t and I have informed Amazon of that.

Hell to pay” — will translate into a $48 (i.e., 15% rebate). {Smile}

Best Buy has already done its Price Match.

And at Garmin. This is a pretty POOR show on their part.

Garmin appears to have screwed-up pretty badly — in making the Slate/Gunmetal version available.

It appears that 2 or 3 New York “Time Square” camera shops got a FEW units early. But, I don’t trust any of these places.

That Amazon did NOT get a shipment as yet is SCARY.

Amazing that they are discounting the Vivoactive 3 already — within a couple of weeks of availability. This discount has trickled down to all the other Garmin products too — as would have to be the case. Glad I am NOT a Garmin shareholder.

Will Pope Francis Retire/Resign In December 2016 — And If So November 19 Consistory?

Click to ENLARGE and read snippet here. Pope continues to REVEL in being confrontational, confounding, contradictory and just plain unpredictable.

Pope Francis will turn 80 on December 17, 2016.

Pope Francis has repeatedly stated, voluntarily, from the very start of his papacy on March 13, 2013, that his will be a short papacy and that he will have no qualms about retiring — though the notion of pope’s retiring only became a reality with the last pope, Benedict XVI

Age ’80’, since the 1970s, has become an artificial ‘high water mark’ in Catholicism since this is when cardinals lose their right to vote in conclaves — while the nominal retirement agent for Archbishops, Bishops and senior curial officers is 75.

While the pope does not have to retire EVER — IF he does want to retire then turning 80 would be a symbolic time (and one that would be much appreciated by cardinals who don’t really like losing their franchise upon reaching that age).

December 17 isn’t that far away. If he resigns on or around his birthday there will be CHAOS with Christmas but two weeks away! They would have to hold a conclave just ahead of Christmas. That would be inconvenient. Yes, he can announce his retirement on his birthday and say that (like Benedict XVI) he will step down after ‘x-weeks’. That would take us into mid-January, and a conclave towards the end of January 2017.

Francis in his 3 years and 3 months as pope has held 2 cardinal creating consistories and created a total of 39 cardinals. That is unremarkable, not too many or not too little. Right now there are 112 cardinal electors (120 the supposed (but untested) MAX). There is no quorum per se. 60 cardinals electors could, quite legitimately, elect a pope. There were 117 eligible cardinal electors for the 2015 conclave and 113 participated.

The annual November “Solemnity of Christ the King” is a favored time, ‘of late’, for cardinal creating consistories. This year it will fall on Sunday, November 20, 2016. So the consistory will be held on the Saturday, November 19th, with the celebratory Mass on the Sunday feast.

November 19th is a propitious day for a cardinal creating consistory. Italian Cardinal Ennio Antonelli will turn 80 the day before opening up one more cardinal elector slot. Barring deaths, with Antonelli’s aging out the electors will be down to 108 on November 19th. Another, Théodore-Adrien Sarr, will turn 80 on November 28th — 9 days later. So there will be 13 genuine cardinal elector slots. That is a nice number to fill.

So, some food for thought.
