The original plan, as I had reported in March 2015, was to end the elephant acts by 2018. They have, bowing to increasing public pressure (some of it untoward in my (informed) opinion), decided to expedite the phase-out by quite a bit — by at least 18 months.
As I talked about in the March post I have mixed feelings about elephants performing in circuses, especially Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey. I would rather see elephants perform than big cats. Having grown up in Ceylon, where elephants are domesticated, I know that elephants, in time, become like good dogs. They are happy to please and doing a few tricks, just like a dog, is no big deal. But, I have seen the documentaries, in particular, ‘An Apology to Elephants‘. So Ringling Brothers are doing the right thing. I am still a tad sad. I am 62 years old and have seen elephant shows all my life. Now, I guess, I will have to go to Sri Lanka, Thailand or India to see performing/working elephants.
