Indian Hindu Hotel Owner Provides Competition To The Bible.

by Anura Guruge

When I opened the bedside drawer
— to store my wallet, phone & car keys.

Both ‘Hindu’ books promote ‘Krishna’.

The Manager a very NICE Indian has this small shrine outside the main door.
One morning, around 7am, I saw him doing his ‘rituals’ by it,
wafting the incense all over his body — which is how I noticed.
Very cute & TOUCHING.

It is true that I no longer spend (at least) 3- to 4-nights a week in hotels as I once did — for around 12-years in total. But, I still spend more nights a year in hotels than most. So, I have seen my share of hotel rooms.

Yes, I have seen ‘The Book of Mormon‘ in hotel rooms before — mainly when staying in Utah. I don’t think I ever saw it along with a ‘standard’ Gideon Bible. I have never seen a non-Christian missive in a hotel room drawer, in the U.S., prior to this — & it is true that I have done NO international travel in decades.

Of the three hotels we spent a total of 6-days during this week-long road trip, two were Indian owned; one also 100% run by Indians. Only one of these hotels, & I will not mention which, had these Hindu/Krishna books. I thought it was CUTE.

I actually looked it up. There is NO REQUIREMENT, let alone a law, that says U.S. hotels must provide a Bible. This was just a convention — encouraged by the Gideon Organization (which provides the Bibles).

Hotels can opt for whatever, & I read that close to 20% now provide no books, whatsoever, in their rooms. Now that I think about it, that seems right. One of the hotels we stayed in, had nothing & their drawers had NOT been cleaned in a long time. I actually had to line it with paper towels!

Well, I just wanted to share this with you.

It is all good.

Confused As To Why UK PM Theresa May Is Concerned About Trump’s New Tariffs — UK Hardly Makes Any Cars!

OK. To be fair, Theresa May, the British Prime Minister, did call on Thursday to talk with Trump about tariffs and OTHER matters (e.g., ISIS and N. Korea). So, that was before Trump had explicitly said that HIS TRADE WAR will involve levying a tax on ‘European‘ cars.

It was the TAX on ‘European’ cars — in particular BRITISH cars — that got me thinking … and then rather upset.

We, the Brits, no longer OWN many car brands! All of our ICONIC British cars companies/brands — Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Mini, Land Rover — are owned by FOREIGN entities, in some cases the dreaded, despicable Germans!

Aston Martin and Morgan are about the only ones that are not owned outright by foreign companies. This is so sad. Breaks my heart. That Rolls Royce/Bentley are owned by BMW/Volkswagen is beyond the pale and that my beloved Jaguar brand belongs to Indians makes me cringe.

Not sure where they get the $9.8 Billion in UK vehicle exports to the US. That must be the cars shipped from the UK. That does not mean all the money goes to the UK.

Ford Motor Company Came To Be This Day, 114-Years Ago — Same Day As IBM, But 8-Years Earlier!

I had a Ford Cortina, as a company car, for awhile, when I worked for ITT. I might have had a Granada too, as a company car, but I can’t be 100% sure.

As far as I know that is the only Ford car I have ‘owned’. I don’t think I have anything against Ford. I would drive a Mustang.

Amazon’s ‘Kindle Direct Publishing’ Now Offering Paperback Print Option Undercutting Amazon’s CreateSpace.

by Anura Guruge

Got the above in an e-mail Wednesday morning.

I was baffled; it made no sense.

Both ‘Kindle Direct Publishing‘ (KDP) and ‘CreateSpace‘ are Amazon companies — though KDP is more tightly integrated with Amazon, e.g., can reach KDP from Amazon.com (usiing same userid/password).

My books are published with BOTH.

‘CreateSpace’ has offered a publish on Kindle option for years — and actually pesters you to do so.

Yes, makes a LOT of sense to combine the two and have just one Amazon publishing company that did BOTH paperbacks and eBooks, i.e., Kindle.

But, in this instance KDP appears to be competing head-on with CS and even telling me to move my paperbacks from CS to KDP.

Does not make sense.

I went to CS to see if I can find a statement. I couldn’t. So I have e-mailed them.

I will keep you posted. Very confusing.

I had noticed that CS since September had been acting jittery. This may have been the cause.

I Can’t Afford A New (Or Even Nearly New) Jaguar — So I Bought Shares In Tata Motors.

Indian Tata Motors have owned the Jaguar Land Rover brand since 2008.

So, given that I can’t afford a new Jaguar I decided that I would do the next best thing — buy a few shares in Tata Motors, the 17th largest ‘car’ company in the world with revenues of US $42 billion.

Having spent a lot of time in India I am no stranger to Tata. Plus the name, an offshoot from a former acronym, is one very familiar to Sinhalese, like I, from Sri Lanka. ‘Tata’, or ‘Tatta’, means father — not that dissimilar to the yiddish word.

So this is the same logic I used with Sony. I can’t afford the Sony A7 RII or the Sony RX10 II (which I really would like to own) — so I bought a few SNE shares, i.e., Sony stock in the U.S.

TTM is the U.S. ‘version’ (i.e., ADS — American Depository Stock) of the Tata shares. It, at around $30 – $32, is not that expensive — say to Apple, Amazon or NetFlix. It has taken a hit of late but that is true of most stock.

So, I now have some affinity with Jaguar — shareholder PLUS two old Jags.

That Jaguar brand is owned by an Indian company only bothers me some. India to me is still the British Raj. The largest country in our glorious British Commonwealth. So there is still British in it. It isn’t like if it was owned by a Chinese, Korean, Japanese or Kraut company. So I am OK with the Indian ownership SINCE the Jaguar Land Rover COMPANY is still in Britian.
