Yes, of course, I met him in the main parking lot at Fort Williams during our visit on Friday, May 28, 2021. Of course, I had to go see; of course, I had have a little chat. As soon as he spoke I knew he was Scottish. That to I, an adopted Scot of long standing, was a thrill. He is quite the artist & quite the man. Impressive.

Other than a very-credible self-portrait most of the work he had on display, quite rightly, had to do with Fort Williams & its iconic & historic lighthouse — the oldest in Maine. I liked his work so much that I bought two paintings.

I wanted to bring him to YOUR attention. Check him out. You will NOT be dissapointed.

‘The Passionate Journey’ (1949) By ‘Irving Stone’, About U.S. Painter ‘John Noble’ Was A Tortuous Read.

by Anura Guruge

My copy of the 1949 book.
Nothing that tells you what it is about!

Irving Stone books. Click to ENLARGE.

I class ‘Irving Stone’ as one of my favorite authors in that his ‘The Agony and the Ecstasyis one my most favorite books & I am also very fond of his ‘The Origin‘ & ‘Men To Match My Mountain‘. As is my wont when it comes to authors I know, I invariably pick up any & all of their books whenever I come across them — used, swap or just giveaway.

That is how I had come across ‘The Passionate Journey’. It was a discard from a local library. Since it lacked a cover, I had NO idea what the book was about! But, it was a ‘Irving Stone’ & that was good enough for I.

It proved to be about mentally-tortured American painter ‘John Noble’. I had never heard of him. I had to look him up. Quite the painter. Interesting style. Very powerful & compelling in a strange way. I do like his paintings. So, I am glad to have learnt of him. NOT a happy soul. Had mental issues & resorted to alcohol to try & mitigate them — though never successfully.

The book, though based on ‘John Noble’, is classed FICTION. A lot of it is just that. Made up, conjecture, embellishment.

This was one of his early work. 12-years prior to ‘The Agony‘. He had NOT hot his stride as a writer.

This book was HARD to read. Though not a very long book it took me nearly 3-months to read it. It would put me to sleep — though the story was quite interesting. So, unless you are interested in ‘John Noble’ you should give this book a skip.

I have nearly all his books. Must try & read another later this year or next.

A ‘John Noble’ SAMPLER from the Web.

“Woman Walks Ahead” Movie (2017) — The New “Dances With Wolves”; (It Is That Good).

The actual portrait of ‘Sitting Bull’ she painted.

The book. Click to ENLARGE.

Dances with Wolves” is one of my favorite movies and one of the few that I have watched multiple times — once quite recently.

So, for me to equate this 2017 movie to that has to mean that it make quite the impression upon I — and it sure did. Powerful and poignant. Immaculately shot and produced. Palpable.

My weekly e-mail from Amazon on its recommended Prime Movies had it at #2. Caught my eye. When I read the description and it said ‘woman painter‘ and ‘Sitting Bull’ I was hooked. Art and native Indians — two topics dear to my heart. I was hoping to watch it with Teischan (12) but it had a ‘R’ rating. I can see why.

So, I watched it on my own. I was riveted. Great movie but an even greater story. Oh, WOW. Man’s inhumanity to man — especially the poor Indians.

Definite, definite ‘must watch’. You will thank me for it.

It will touch your very core.

The First Man Ever In Space, Yuri Gagarin, Was Born This Day In 1934.

by Anura Guruge

I got to meet him when he visited Ceylon
(now Sri Lanka) in 1961.

I was 7 years old. But, of course, knew who he was.

I got to shake his hand.

To this day, I consider this one of the highlights of my rather uneventful life.

Today Was The Birthday Of The GREAT Michelangelo — March 6, 1475.

by Anura Guruge

In my opinion, the GREATEST ARTIST EVER.

Excelled in multiple fields.

A sobering and inspiring life.

He really devoted his life to his work. No real family life or love. He suffered.

I think of him in time of adversity.

Teischan (11) Embellishes Her Painted Hamster Cage Table.

Teischan has a problem common to many artists. She is not sure when one of her works is done. She — and we — thought the table was done by Sunday night. Appears it was not the case. Yesterday, after school, she had the inspiration to add these ‘black’ trees (or I think that that is what they are). I must confess they do add some je ne sais quoi.

In the late 1970s, while working for IBM, I was extremely fortunate in getting to spend some time with the GREAT British painter, conservationist and rail enthusiast David Shepard. One night over some drinks, in a pub, he told me his secret as to when he knew when one of his masterpieces of done. He would look at it, over his shoulder, using a mirror. If it looked right in the mirror he knew it was done.

No, no. Not a Teischan creation, BUT one of David’s most commercially successful paintings.

You have already seen his Photoshop artistry and some of his writing. Now a poem-in-prose.

P.S., Dick added this in his e-mail with the poem: “Don’t worry, the subject of this poem is purely fictional, not about anyone I know personally.

British Painter William Hogarth (Of The London Roundabout), Was Born This Day, 320-Years Ago, November 10, 1697.

Given my British upbringing, I am, of course, familiar with William Hogarth and his work.

I do not consider him one of my iconic artists, but I do enjoy and appreciate his work — in all of its facets.

If, however, the truth be told, I know him MOST, and think of him, in terms of THE London roundabout. Over the years I have spent many lifetimes in and around that roundabout — stuck in London traffic. Aaahhh, the Hogarth Roundabout. What a landmark.

Yes, we commemorated his birthday which was on March 9 (1934).

So he went to space 34-days after his 27th birthday.

He died, tragically, when he was 34.
