I have always said that going to ‘Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center‘ (DHMC), in Lebanon, N.H. is like visiting a resort rather than a high-end, full-function hospital. They go out of their way to make the environment soothing and pleasing to the senses. You are surrounded by very high-class art and if you are lucky, as I was this morning, with live music from a piano  player at a grand.

They had works by Milford (N.H.) artist ‘William Cheever Turner‘ on display in one wing. I had never heard of him and I wish I had. His work, as you can see, is quite spectacular. I took a few pictures so I could SHARE them with you. You have to check out his. The level of detail and realism is phenomenal.

It was a good day overall, and we were not there for anything serious. These paintings made my morning.

Enjoy.

This is quite the movie! Wow. Very moving. It sucks you right in.

One night a couple of weeks ago I was going through my STARZ channels on DISH and caught a bit of the movie. Looked interesting. So, I downloaded it, from STARZ-on-Demand.

Never heard of the movie or Maud Lewis, which it is about. But, I am glad I downloaded it.

Amazing story. I like a plain but bold paintings. Very inspirational. She was always happy and smiling despite all of her obvious adversity and setbacks.

Definitely recommended.

Edgar Degas, The Inspiring Impressionist, Was Born This Day, July 19, 183-Years Ago — In 1834.

As with Rembrandt 4-days ago, I do not think of Edgar Degas as one the artists that will make my top 10 though I sure have no problems with either his cleverly rendered paintings or his exquisite sculptures of dancers. I have seen quite a bit of his work in Paris and in New York — and I notice that I invariably will dally around, admiring his talent from different angles and different perspectives. Though most think of him in terms of ‘ballerinas’ he sure was adept at painting nudes — as you can see from the gallery above. He made it to the 20th century, dying in Paris, during WW I

I have stood in front of this painting, with its compelling ‘wavy frame’, for three years now — in awe.

I know, even without asking, that it is way beyond my league.

This year one of the ladies just happened to tell me, without me even asking, that it was done by her cousin, ‘Steve Barton’,
in California and that he invented the ‘Wavy Frame’. She told me to look him up on the Web. I did.
I knew he wasn’t painting a scene in New Hampshire because I have never seen oranges like that
up here — not even at a supermarket.

We did not know till last night that Saad Hindal, who is amazingly talented and a very nice guy to boot, had painted that amazing, very evocative mural in Concord — at the gas station (now closed) right opposite Concord High School (where all of his kids attended).

If you want a mural painted by Saad for your home or business let me know. My contact is over here >>> You will not regret it. You will have a treasure on your hand.

These paintings are INEXPENSIVE by local standards. Even I could afford one! If you are interested e-mail me. My e-mail is on the sidebar. Click to ENLARGE. This is a rather large canvas. The others are smaller.

This was his latest. He had just finished it. He was eager for me to take a picture of it.

A new impressionistic style that Mr. Hindal is experimenting with. This is the NH Lakes Region, ‘Laconia’, in early Fall.

Mr. Saad Hindal.

On Thursday, September 5, on the way back from another doctor’s appointment in Bedford we stopped by Mr. Hindal’s house in Concord to pay for the picture we got on ‘take it … pay me when you have the money’ at the Laconia Multicultural Day in August.

He has a delightful residence full of color, murals on the wall and paintings everywhere. He and his family, per their background, were wonderful hosts. We all had a great time. So much so that we are going back. We didn’t have much time on Thursday. It was late and we had to get ready for our trip to Acadia.

As you can tell I am very impressed with Mr. Hindal’s work. The colors and forms really appeal to us all.

Yes, I plan to promote his work as much as I can. He has published a book. He gave Deanna an autographed copy. It is quite beautiful. I will try and get it made available to a wider audience.

IF you are interested in any of his work PLEASE contact me. My e-mail is on the sidebar. I will make it happen.

Auguste Rodin’s Birthday: November 12, 1840.

Anura Guruge, laughing, picture November 16, 2011.

….
by Anura Guruge

Google, in their always cute ‘top left‘ motif, started giving us the head’s up on this birthday since late last night. Yes, I use Google even past midnight. 172nd birthday.

Most know him, deservedly, for his iconic, deeply visceral ‘The Thinker‘. He was, however, ultra prolific in multiple forms, also been a painter in oils and watercolor. Something that many may not have appreciated was that Rodin invariably made multiple copies of his work, actually having mechanical ‘duplicating arms’ to help copy the outline from a finished sculpture to a new block of material. He also employed an army of assistants to help with the copies. So there are supposed to be at least 20 Rodin authorized copies of ‘The Thinker’. That took me by surprise when I saw one at ‘California Palace of the Legion of Honor’ in San Francisco.

So lets take this birthday as an excuse for a little bit of Rodin indulgence, he considered the ‘Father of Modern Sculpture‘.

Rodin watercolor from 1905. He would have been 65.

The Kiss, 1901 – 1904. Multiple authorized copies exist.

My favorite, maybe second favorite, Rodin, ‘The Burghers of Calais’ by at the Victoria Tower Gardens, London, England. Again there are copies including one at the New York Met.
