Fascinating Story About How Prior Pope Benedict XVI’s Parents Met In The 1920s.

by Anura Guruge

It is a cute, but true, story from 2006 which needs to be preserved. It is from my favorite daily paper, the U.K. “Daily Mail“, which I used to read everyday when I lived in the UK — and now read online everyday.

Wonder how many people know of this story. Real nice. The pope’s father appears to have waited a long time; 43-years prior to this marriage! Was he previously married?

This had to do with the availability of a document that should have been available for the public to see.

I got up, earlier in the meeting, and raised a ‘Point of Order‘ on it.

I was told by Superintendent Lander that a printed copy of the document was made available with the other papers, e.g., agenda and minutes.

The document was not there.

So having patiently waited till I was again permitted to speak, at the 2nd ‘public input’ slot, I question Lander as to where the document is or was.

Well you can, IF you have bionic hearing, since ACS appears to have doctored the sound, hear Lander say something along the lines of “I don’t know”!

That is great.

You can see that I was not amused. This, the ‘Breaking Glass‘ meeting, was FAR from funny. Probably one of the saddest and most disturbing public meetings I have ever attended. This day should go down in infamy as a very sad day for Alton.

Deanna has already contacted SAU about the UNACCEPTABLE sound on this video
— a VERY important one that every resident in Alton should watch.

About a month ago I noticed a sudden SPIKE in the interest in this post — which kind of surprised me since, like most things related to ACS other than building renovation, nobody in Alton appears to give a damn about ACS-related matters whether it be Common Core, Strategic Plan involvement, lack of safety glass in the school, Destination Imagination (DI), etc. etc.

The hits have continued daily and I know that MOST are not from within NH. That a kind, gentle lady, a fellow author, commented on it from Nevada shows that this post is getting widespread attention. And I am glad — though it does NOT help us in Alton, N.H. per se.

I, despite my best efforts, have failed miserably in trying to get a modicum of accountability from this outlandishly arrogant, ‘gag the public’, and totally dysfunctional, School Board. Well now at least others can see what I have had to contend with. That is some consolation. If nothing else I will document the charade in my vain, but probably now incorrect, belief that ‘the pen‘ has some might.

Contrary to what some think this blog is read around the world and most of my hits are from OUTSIDE New Hampshire — which delights me no end given that I really am, in the end, a bona fide denizen of the world. I still can’t establish by Devanee, who did attend, as to how many other ACS kids went. All I know was that it was a full, full-size school bus. Obviously I can’t also determine whether it was open to all or only selected kids were allowed to attend — and, of course, parents had to consent to it.

Since I could not get her to talk to me about it, I got her to write a 4-page report. She did that first thing this morning after she got back from our run (or my run, her walk) up Prospect Mountain Hill. Per her report there were 40 school buses there. She had claimed that it was broadcast live on ‘radio’. I couldn’t find it and I checked NHPR and YouTube.

Devanee wrote, the following () about ‘Lizzie’. She was a featured speaker and I could find a video of her from this same event — last year. That follows (↓↓). This is good. I am glad. All of this is great stuff.

MY LETTER.

Just because I am married to a man of letters does NOT mean that I can’t write my own letters and have my own opinions.

Check my Facebook where I have my own say
— and had words yesterday to say about folks that think that I am NOT capable of having my own opinions!
Yesterday’s post, as it said right at the top, was done at MY behest.

That might be the case with others, but NOT in our marriage.
My husband lets me have my own say and own opinions.

This is from Deanna — who is not happy that she appears to be the ONLY unaffiliated, i.e., NOT on the ACS payroll, parent on this Committee.

She attended BOTH, 8 am to 3 pm meetings, Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2013 — and is sure that she was the only unaffiliated parent.

Before she attended the meetings she requested a list of the attendees from the SAU. She got a ‘roster’ with 25 names — one already marked as ‘unable to attend’.

Last week she e-mailed the SAU and asked for the list of those that actually attended the two meetings. She HAS an e-mail that claims, rightly or wrongly, that ‘no attendance’ was recorded; i.e., there was no sign-up list! She is seeking confirmation of this statement.

This Strategic Planning effort is costing Alton Taxpayers real money. The external ‘consultant’ alone is costing at least $3,000 (if not more if other expenses are being paid).

They HIRED a bunch of substitutes to cover ALL the teachers that were attending the meetings! Devanee, not the most reliable of sources for ACS news, claimed that she heard that there were 19 substitutes at ACS on Oct. 31 — which would be appropriate given that it was Halloween. Scary stuff.

So, this is the breakdown per the pre-meeting ‘Roster’. Only one board member attended. According to Deanna the Administration staff were in-and-out.

I already said my piece about this two weeks ago.

We are now going into the 2nd week of November. Soon it will be Thanksgiving.

It is TOO LATE to realistically start a DI team. It is not fair on the kids!

DI is a lot of work. Hours expended matters and counts.

When you go to the first regional meet it is NOT FAIR on the kids if they are competing against kids who have had a month or more of lead time.

I watch the kids’ eyes as they look at their peers from other schools competing. You can read their emotions. When they see performances vastly superior to their own, PARTLY because they spent much, much, much more time, you can see the awe and disappointment in their eyes. They would have liked to have done something like that too — but they never had the time.

That is why I am OPPOSED to having teams that start late. DI is for the kids. Don’t burden them with disadvantages even before they start.

Then there is my other pet peeve. Why can’t this principal order some of her teachers to be the DI coaches? I am a great believer that each DI team should be coached by a school teacher assisted by a parent.

The Number Of Unaffiliated Parents On Alton Central Strategic Plan Committee — Just ONE (1)?

nonaffiliatedparents

Yes, the school will immediately claim that there are ‘x’ other parents on the Committee — but as far as we can tell they are ALL on the ACS payroll, as teachers or support staff.

While their status as parents is very true, being affiliated with ACS does make a difference as to how objective and OPEN one can be.

So …

Depending on how you count, and whether or not you count the facilitator and admin staff (that come and go), the numbers, as far as I have been told, comes somewhere between 22 and 19

What is key is just ONE (1) unaffiliated parent!

That the meetings were scheduled, back-to-back, Thursday & Friday, to run from 8 to 4 is a sure way to eliminate a ton of parents from attending.

So, PAID ACS staff, make up the numbers — and they hire substitutes, as necessary, to fill the gaps!

If you think this is right and proper MORE power to you.

Heads Up For Alton Central School (ACS) Parents: Glass In Some Doors In ACS NOT Safety Glass. A Door Broke Tonight.

All of us happened to be at Alton Central tonight for the October School Board meeting, in the Middle School Library, when the glass on the door broke.

It was NOT SAFETY GLASS!

Ols, single pane, non-safety glass like on the door at ACS.

Old, single pane, non-safety glass like on the door at ACS.

There were shards of glass all over the place and shards left on the door.

If this had happened when a small kid was opening or closing that door the outcome could have been DISASTROUS.

Of course, I immediately asked, when I was allowed to speak, as to why it was NOT safety glass.

This is serious.

The Department of Labor inspected the school in Spring. They found some violations BUT they obviously did not check the glass. This is not good.

What we don’t know is how many other doors and windows at ACS as old, single-pane, NON-SAFETY glass.

At 11 pm tonight, given that I work at night, I called up Mr. John Dever III, Alton Town’s Building Inspector and told him about the situation. I urged him to get to ACS ASAP and check all the glass.

I believe the school should be CLOSED until all the old, non-safe glass is replaced.

Well you have been told.
