‘Acadia National Park’ (Maine) Remains Partially Open Despite 2018 Government Shutdown.

Despite the Shutdown that started at midnight Friday, Acadia National Park stayed partially open on Saturday, January 20, 2018 and the plans are that that would continue to be the case Sunday.

Only a very small section of the Park Loop Road, on Mount Desert Island, is open — due to snow and ice. They will not be opening any new stretches during the Shutdown.

All the toilets are closed and I assume as are the Visitor Centers. The Park Rangers will also not respond to any emergencies. You will have to call 911 and get State or Town help.

But, they have NOT closed the gates! That is good — but that can change.

An irony of such Shutdowns is that they STOP updating Government Websites! So, you can’t find the latest status of Park closing on the Web. They will not be answering the phone either.

But, for now, this is better than what happened during the 2013 Shutdown when they did close the gates pretty early on.

I will try to keep you posted.

As far as I know, and as far as I can tell, this is the only fatal accident anywhere close to Acadia National Park in 2017 — so far. The prior major accident, on July 11, 2017, was non-fatal. Prior to that was the motorcycle crash, on Cadillac Mountain, September 4, 2016.

To be fair this was NOT inside the Park but it is as close to the Park as you can get without actually being inside. As you can see in the report, Park Rangers were at the accident to handle traffic.

Well known landmark. Hard to miss. Always crowded.

We were, of course, at Acadia over the Labor Day Weekend, this year — as we have since 2013. Traffic was crazy a couple of times BUT no accidents as far as I heard.
