bnmommessin

Mommessin in 2013. They have been producing Beaujolais since 1865. Click here for a very good article about Beaujolais Nouveau.

I happened to be at the Wolfeboro N.H. Liquor Store last night, buying the de rigueur 5 litres of boxed Merlot for my daily medicinal use, when I got talking with the Manager (who had been employed there for 8 years) about Beaujolais Nouveau. He assured me that he will have bottles for sale on November 21 — and how he gets the boxes from Georges Duboeuf well in advance but is prohibited from selling prior to THE DAY. I knew that. I was telling him about Beaujolais Nouveau parties in London when he asked me whether anybody else, other than G.D., sold Beaujolais Nouveau. I assured him that most certainly others did.

But this morning I did some research. Georges Duboeuf, by far, is the leading worldwide retailer of Beaujolais Nouveau. It appears that it is they that popularized the wine in the U.S. (if not in other parts of the world too). They might be the only mainstream supplier of B.N. in the U.S.

But, there are certainly others.

As far as I can work out some of the other vendors include: Joseph Drouhin, Mommessin (–>), Albert Bichot, Bouchard Aîné & Fils, Thorin and Signé Vignerons.

If you know of others or have a complete list please SHARE.

Here are JUST SOME of the pictures I found from a quick Google.

Why NO Beaujolais Nouveau Day Parties In New Hampshire? Are We That Provincial?

This is what they had in Philly last year.

This is what they had in Philly last year.

I just did a Google to see if there were any Beaujolais Nouveau Day Parties in New Hampshire last year. I couldn’t find any and I wasn’t aware of any, though I know that our NH Liquor Stores did a tasting or something.

This needs to be rectified. We are not that provincial, are we?

I used to host Beaujolais Nouveau Day parties in London — but, I was a Customer Support Manager, with a mandate and at least when I worked for ITT, an unlimited budget, to keep the customers happy, whatever it took.

I am going to contact Julie at Giuseppe’s (Meredith) and see if she is interested.

I will also contact Daryl Eames of iHeartDining and see if he can pull some strings.

IF you are interested let me know. I am going to try and rectify this.

Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve Scottish Style) in New Hampshire.

I have talked about ‘Hogmanay‘ once or twice before on this blog, given that it is a holiday that I am very fond of. Yes, it is a New Year’s Eve bash, but it is one done with gusto, passion, lots of music, some bagpipes if you are lucky and of course, lots of booze, with single malts coming into play at some point. Yes, it definitely helps if you are dark haired, or even better have black hair and a dark complexion — now that chimney sweeps are hard to find. Yes, there is a lovely Scottish tradition that says that associating with dark people at hogmanay bring you luck for the coming year. It originated with chimney sweeps, but now it applies to all darkies (like me). I used to get invited up to Glasgow in Scotland for hogmanay. I had a friend, who died last year, who was a big wheel in every sense in Scotland, who booked an entire hotel for the night of December 31st so that his friends could celebrate hogmanay in style. At midnight women would line up to be kissed by the darkies …

I am surprised that there aren’t many, if any, hogmanay parties in NH given the crowds that attend the annual Scottish Highland Games at Loon. There are 2 to 3 hogmanay style Scottish dinners at the local hotels on Friday and Saturday night during the games. I would have thought that they would try and do a proper hogmanay party along similar lines. All you need is a couple of Scottish musicians and hopefully a few bagpipers.

I did find one event labelled as such in NH, but it is at a church and it finishes way before midnight.

Next year, when all have recovered from any and all hangovers from this year’s celebration I am going to start talking to various people about extending their event to include some elements of hogmanay.

Check the list of U.K. holidays I posted before Christmas. In Scotland both January 1 & 2 are holidays, the second day a must to recover from the first footing of New Year’s.

Happy New Year. May you be showered with all that is best in life in 2013.

But, these days tipplers, most likely being snobbish since ‘Nouveau‘ has never been a refined wine, are giving it a miss and just using the day as an excuse to celebrate. I, a great lover of all celebrations, independent of cause, religion or culture, am all for that, but ‘come on’ … lets raise a glass to the ‘Nouveau‘. I plan to do so tonight. I will let you know what I think. Swansea was where I went for my first degree, 1971 to 1974. It was very different then. Just at the start of the upswing.
