“Easter From King’s” Now On BritBox — As IF You Would Need More Incentive To Get BritBox.

I raving about the Christmas counterpart. Click to access my post from Christmas.

“Easter from King’s” is new to I, but I am sure it will also be divine.

I grew up with “Christmas from King’s” on the BBC and then PBS. To Christmas was not Christmas without “King’s”.

They have the MOST exquisite of choirs. Trust me on this.

This will be GOOD. That is a given. That is a guarantee.

Just get BritBox for a month, JUST for this. Britbox is an unique collaboration between the BBC & ITV to deliver British shows overseas. Yes, we have a subscription, have had it for nearly a year, love it and use it multiple times a week.

You will THANK ME for this recommendation.

From a prior year, on YouTube, for FREE.

‘Vienna Blood’, On PBS & Amazon Prime, Relatively Good, But Not Brilliant — At Least As Yet.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access PBS homepage.

It is definitely NOT bad. Quite watchable. I guess I was expecting something ‘more’ — more gripping, taught and dramatic. That said, the first case, involving two murderers, and spanning the first two episodes, was quite interesting. Interesting twists. Quite clever. Very well shot. Makes a change to have a murder/mystery set in Vienna as opposed to the U.K. or U.S.A.

It is still being aired weekly. Earlier episodes are being streamed online — on PBS and Amazon Prime, albeit for a price.

Well, we plan to watch all the episodes. Seen the first two. Will watch three soon.

‘Little Women’ (2019) Movie — Masterfully Crafted & Shot, And Yes, Heartwarming Too.

The 2017 U.K. BBC produced 2-part TV mini-series
shown on PBS ‘Masterpiece Theatre’ this last Summer.

The cinematography & production was masterful. A visual treat. The quality of the imagery was breathtaking. That is what saved this long (i.e., 2-hour, 10-minute) movie for I. I was just totally taken in by the artistry.

Of course we all know the story — though I, who didn’t grow up in the U.S. — had not read the book. But, I had seen the TV series — just this last Summer. And therein lay the problem. It was déjà vu repeated (SMILE). The BBC production, in terms of quality, was not that dissimilar. Watch the YouTube trailers above. Different casts, though as equally good I think, but very similar — and the ‘Masterpiece Theatre‘ showing had the advantage that it came in two-parts.

The movie is long. Teischan (13) who wanted to see it, though she had seen the PBS version, said that she got bored! Not good. But, 85% of that was that we had just seen the other less than 6-months ago. Our fault.

So, first and foremost. IF you saw the PBS version wait until this movie is available on ‘TV’. Go see something else. There is no shortage of decent movies right now.

IF you haven’t seen the PBS version I am sure you will LOVE this movie. Great story and the movie is immaculately produced. It cannot be faulted on its own — just when compared to the other production from just 2-years ago. Why you would spend all this money to make a movie when the BBC had done a TV version, basically in the same timeframe, is a mystery.

But, overall, I enjoyed it. So, I have given you the parameters.

Enjoy. Happy New Year.

The New Series ‘Jennie’, About Winston Churchill’s American Mother, On ‘Acorn’ TV, Is Quite The Story.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the ‘Acorn’ TV homepage for this new series.

I saw it being advertised on the banner of ‘Acorn‘ for the last week or so — but, I think it only became available today. We watched Episode 1 and it was GOOD.

Alas, though new to Acorn, it is NOT new. Appears it was shown on Thames in 2009 — so, 10-years ago. So, the quality, alack, is not that of ‘Victoria‘ on PBS. But, it is not dreadful. It is better than what you will find of YouTube.

I knew a bit about her suitor and husband Lord Randolph Churchill given that he is my hero Winston’s father. So, I learnt a fair amount about both of them in this first episode — how they met, their whirlwind romance and ahead-of-schedule marriage. I am looking forward to watching the rest of the series.

Looks very promising and I know that Lord Randolph’s story gets more colorful, though sad.

“Mrs Wilson” On PBS “Masterpiece” Is Kind Of Different, But Very Watchable.

by Anura Guruge

Appears that complete episodes are available on YouTube
for free.

We saw the trailer on PBS, multiple times, though we couldn’t garner much from it. But, it was a “Masterpiece” and that meant I recorded it automatically.

We watched 90-minutes of Episode 1 that aired last night.

We liked it, though it was NOT what we were expecting. Not lavish drama. But, interesting and intriguing. Definitely captivates you.

We will finish it tomorrow and we are already looking forward to the next episode.

Wanted to make sure I shared it with you.

Check it out. PBS will air it at least once this week (most likely on Saturday) and it is available online.

I Had No Idea That ‘Jimi Hendrix’ Was Part-Cherokee Indian.

Click to ENLARGE and read here. From Wikipedia (of course). Wikipedia link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix

I had just always assumed that Jimi Hendrix was black. To be fair I had never given much thought to Indians shaping rock-and-roll — though I have often wondered why there aren’t as many famous Navajos as you would expect.

Given the volume of PBS we watch, we see quite a few of the previews and I do check their guide, on a regular basis, to make sure that I don’t miss something that I will regret.

So, it jolted me to hear Jimi being described as part-Cherokee. I had to DVR this ‘Independent Lens‘ show. I have watched a bit of it and it was good. I certainly recommend it. Check out the YouTube trailer above. That will convince you.

As for Jimi being Indian. He definitely wasn’t, from what I can see, even half-Cherokee. Was it a quarter? I think it was less, but I gather that even 1% black makes you black. So, I guess.

Interesting. Wonder if Jimi ever talked about his Cherokee ancestry. I will have to look into that.

“Victoria”, Season 3, On A Par With The Excellence Of Seasons 1 & 2.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access homepage for this GREAT show.

Watched it (off DVR) tonight and were delighted. Yes, yes, it lives up to expectations. As good as the prior seasons, albeit just based on this very first episode. Gripping subject — the French Revolution across the Channel. We were captivated.

That none of the cast get any older, though about 9-years have passed, since we first met her, is a bit disconcerting, but it is nice to have all the familiar faces about.

Yes, definitely recommended. Try and catch it. PBS will be showing Episode 1 all week.

With “Vanity Fair” Amazon Prime Video Sets Out To Compete With PBS “Masterpiece”.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access IMDb.com listing.

We have so far watched episode 1 and most of episode 2. It is very good, indeed. Lavishly and painstakingly produced. Visually very pleasing.

Compelling story too. No, I had not read William Makepeace Thackeray’s book (alas). Classic mid-19th century period drama. Reminded me of “Howards End“, “Importance of being Earnest” & “Wuthering Heights”.

Definitely worth watching. Very rewarding.

I am glad that I got an e-mail from Prime giving me a heads-up on the availability of this series.

So, now I am passing this on. A ‘Prime Original’. Money well spent by Amazon. Bravo.

Saw the trailer for Season 3 on PBS the other day and it made our day. Loved Seasons 1 & 2. Don’t think we realized that there was going to be a Season 3. Sure glad there is.

Looking back I see that Season 2 premiered in January 2018. So, Season 3 is coming exactly a year later. So, that must have been the plan all along.

Sure pleased. Wanted to share with you. Now you know. I will remind you, closer to the start.

I happened, serendipitously, catch a trailer, on PBS, and knew, at once, that I had to watch this. Everything I like — all-things-British, period drama, innovation, aviation — in one movie. I have set the DVR to record.

Up here in the Northeast it is on Boston WGBH Channel 44 — their auxiliary channel to the main Channel 2. You will have to check the PBS listing in your area. It is at 8pm on Thanksgiving — Thursday, November 22, 2018.

Given that it is BBC produced it is bound to be superlative. The BBC, as YOU know, rarely lets the side down.
