Sri Lanka’s Draconian COVID-19 Lockdown & Curfew — Justifiable Or Overkill?

Yes, of course, absolutely bloody brilliant. WOW. Who would have thought.

Just 7 deaths — though, of course, even ONE death is too much.

They, especially the government & health professionals deserve much kudos & applause for this superhuman achievement.

Left the developed countries in the dust by quite a FEW orders of magnitude.

Yes, the numbers may not be fully accurate. But, I doubt whether, worst case, it is off by much more than say 1/100th. So, maybe 64,900 cases & 700 deaths. That is still absurdly low.

Until last night, when a cousin living in Sri Lanka, who happens to be a doctor, told me the details, I was NOT aware of the draconian lockdown & curfew.

They shut down all ‘ports’ — inbound & outbound. Not just passengers, goods as well.

It has been FORTRESS SRI LANKA for over a month.

They sure managed to keep the virus in check. BRAVO.

But, but, but … was it worth it?

At WHAT a huge cost?

I am sure that they will study this at Harvard, in years to come, as a Case Study. Was it the right thing to do?

Yes, when they started the lockdown, they, obviously, did not know what the infection & death rates were going to be.

But, the unintended consequences! WOW.

It, of course, has decimated the economy and the economy was already in BAD SHAPE following the tourist slump post the Easter 2019 ‘incident’.

People will DIE because of poverty!

This is sad. This is BAD.

Yes, of course, this being Sri Lanka there is dirty politics involved!

And China.

China will gain even more control.

All in all, I do not think this is good.

But, I am NOT an expert and I have no skin in the game.

Coronavirus COVID-19 Death Rates Vary Significantly By State — New Hampshire Doing Quite Well.

by Anura Guruge

One thing is obvious. Death rate is higher when a State gets inundated.

That explains New York.

People are dying because they are not getting adequate care. Scary.

I am semi-numerate and could tell, at a glance, when it appears on TV, that the New Hampshire death rate was WAY BELOW that of New York. Drove me crazy that nobody was showing the percentages. So, I did it. I didn’t do it for all the States. Hence the gaps … indicated by black rows.

States with low cases — for now — have less deaths because they have the resources to treat the patients better. Pretty self-evident.

So. Thought you might find this interesting.

These numbers STILL REALLY mean NOTHING
since they are CONTINGENT
on the % of people TESTED.

They are ONLY meaningful IF enough people are tested.

Otherwise the Death % and Per Capita numbers are terribly skewed.

The figures for India obviously can’t be true.

The German numbers need to be looked at!

The U.S. numbers — again skewed by inadequate testing — are middle of the road.

They will go up over the next couple of weeks. That we can be sure of.

No, despite my reputation for being rather partiality to a daily (diluted) glass of red wine (only because of its medicinal benefits), I alone cannot be held responsible for this ‘high’ rate. See this WMUR presentation for the complete list. Only Idaho and D.C. (which is not a State per se) come ahead of us. D.C. is easy to understand.

Of course it does not take a genius to work out what the discrepancy here is. It is our tax free wine sales to the out-of-staters.

But, there is actually another reason too. Our small and aging population — assuming, of course, that the Fed does their per capita based on the estimated number of adults in the State.
