Yet Another Bear Attack Last Night (With Video); 4th Of This Summer — BUT Totally Our Fault.

by Anura Guruge

Bent the metal post —
that I had fixed with a metal bar after last attack!

4th KNOWN visit — 3rd time we have caught them; twice on video, other time on camera (IN PERSON). 1st Video (May 11, 2080). When I went out with camera to take pictures (May 26, 2020).

We forgot to bring the bird feeder in! Our fault. After the last attack, on May 26, we had a system. One of us would bring it in & the other would check! Well, the system failed last night. No, we had forgotten a few other times BUT we had lucked out. Kind of thought the bear must have moved on. Yesterday it rained. That kind of messed up our schedule. But, no excuses. IF we had remembered to bring in THE feeder this would not have happened.

YET AGAIN, the feeder is GONE. Not in our yard. We have lost 4 feeders — for a total of over $400! This one was BIG, but plain. I don’t think it cost much. But, YIKES.

BIG BEAR!

Around 1am. I went out for a walk at 11pm. I am NOT afraid of bears BUT it would not have been that exciting to walk into him/her!

Well. That is IT. No more hanging bird feeders. We have two window feeders on windows NOT accessible to bears.

Feeder he stole last night. I liked it. BIG & simple (kind of like I).

The main feeder he/she destroyed last time — May 26.
Had it for just under a month. $42 + $16 for the pole.
Getting to be an expensive hobby. Over $210 in lost bird feeders just this Spring.

Bear-Proof, Window Bird Feeder For My 4th Floor Office.

by Anura Guruge

We have had to rethink our bird feeder intentions now that we have had three bear attacks!

The window bird feeder we had, on the ground floor, was attracting a fair number of birds — though it took nearly a year for them to find the feeder. They really are bird brained!

Given the amount of time I spend in my office, with a window just 4′ to my right, I thought it would be nice to have visits from some birds. But, my office is right at the top of this colonial-style house. What would be considered the attic in most other houses. The 4th floor in this house. It is high off the ground. Not sure whether birds will detect the bird feed.

Not sure if birds are color blind. Put a bright yellow ear of corn in the feeder today hoping that they might see (or smell) it. I will have to look it up,

The roof you see below is that of a the garage.

I am hoping that this bird feeder is beyond the reach of the bears. Yes, given their prodigious climbing abilites — & I have seen them climb trees — they could reach it, if they really tried. But, I am hoping that they will appreciate that it is a lot of work. If they grab at the feeder, it will come off & the bear WILL tuble backwards! That would result in quite the commotion.

In the middle picture you can see the corner of my desk & across it some of the shelves housing MY TOYS! You can also see the rearview mirror I have so I can see what is happening in our drive without having to get up from my PC. I also have our security system monitor in front of me — BUT I have to get up to see that.

Do you like my semi-topless Hawaiian hula girl. I actually have two. One is solar powered & dances for I, non-stop, when the sun is shining.

The Damage The Bear Did To Our $43 Bird Feeder Last Night.

The Pole

The DESTROYED Bird Feeder

Click to access Amazon listing for this pretty nice bird feeder.

We brought in all the bird feeders last night — after the bear left, calmly ambling down the road.

This morning we got to properly survey the damage he/she did.

Pretty impressive. Never realized that they were THAT strong.

I eventually managed to straighten the pole BUT I had to use a hammer. The bear bent it with its bear hands. Wow.

Bringing everything in. Also moving feeders to upper floors of the house! Will tell you more later.

A Bear In Our Yard Again. I Went Out To Get Some Pictures.

Two weeks ago. Check this post.

Around 9pm tonight. I was having dinner watch TV.

Teischan (14) heard a noise, came downstairs & saw the bear through the window. I heard Braxton starting to bark. Maya was with I, downstairs.

I went outside to look. It had moved from the house to the road. It growled at I. I didn’t have my phone. Came in got my phone & my headlights. Went out. We watched each other. Fair size bear. Might have been the mother. I couldn’t tell.

He/She was kind of cute. Ate all the birdseed from that bird feeder.

Destroyed ANOTHER. See below. Again, as with the other two times it was the MOST expensive we had! Like Teischan commented, it is like they know.

Our fault. For about a week, I, religiously, brought in ALL the bird feeders. Assumed they must have moved on.

What is amusing is that I go out walking, often with both dogs, around 10:30pm. Never seen a bear on those walks.

Well, lesson learned. I am cool. I have no quarrels with bears. They have a right to the land. Our fault.

While we are bummed about the feeders, the bears do not bother I.

I like bears. Never been TOO close to one, but I have no quarrels or fear of them.

I am happy that they got something to eat. SMILE.
