The OUTSTANDING, spot-on, YouTube tutorial video we used from ‘Screen Surgeons’. Excellent. Everything was as shown on the video. THANKS.

What the broken screen looked like. The crack is diagonal, left-to-right, from top-middle … You should be able to see the two lines. Click to ENLARGE.

Last Sunday, June 8, Deanna going down the stairs from our 4th floor office, tripped on Teischan’s Toshiba Satellite. Teischan had left it in the middle of the stairs — for me to take up and charge. She tends to do that. Leave her laptop or pad on the stairs for Dad to take up to charge. This time it didn’t work like that. Initially we thought that we had got away with no damage to the laptop. Alas, not so. The screen was broken. I was very upset.

I had got the Toshiba, last March (i.e., 2013), for Teischan’s 7th birthday — from TigerDirect, refurbished. It had been one heck of a deal. A quick check of TigerDirect and Amazon proved that I would not be able to get an equivalent laptop, refurbished or otherwise, for even close to what I had paid in 2013 for this laptop. Laptop prices rather than coming down due to the lack of demand precipitated by Pads is actually going up. I was very distressed. Late that night I went looking for screen replacement tutorials on YouTube and found the one shown above. It was excellent. Made me realize that we could try and do it. I then went to Amazon looking for a screen. Found the one shown above. Price was good PLUS it was from Amazon. So I knew that returning it, if we had issues, would not be a problem.

It came on Friday. That was excellent.

My PC guy, Shane Selling of Hexacopter fame, gave me some advice over e-mail: “make a diagram of the laptop and put all the screws, in the right place, on that diagram”. That was good. Thanks, Shane. Taking it to Shane, if we screwed up (with the screws) was always the contingency.

On Sunday we got ready for the ‘surgery’. I got Deanna to watch the video the night before. She, after watching it, was very confident that she could do it. That suited me fine. She is good at detailed, finicky work — and that would let me catch up on my writing. A couple of years ago, again following a YouTube video, Deanna had very successfully replaced a DVD drive in Devanee’s ASUS laptop. So I knew she could work on laptops.

Well I made sure she was all set with the tools. She had her ASUS laptop with the video running. Devanee stood by to help. We eventually sent Teischan away because she was getting in the way. I did some writing.

It was, per Deanna and Devanee, exactly as shown on the YouTube. Thank YOU. That was excellent. Maybe it took 20 minutes. We were not rushing. We lost 5 minutes because I lost the bezel. When Deanna took it off I put it in a safe place and then couldn’t find it. Old age.

Other than misplacing the bezel, which we eventually found, ‘right there’, all went fine.

Laptop looks like new. Works fine. I am delighted.

So just wanted to share that replacing a laptop screen isn’t that hard and can be done at home.

Robert Burns Birthday Post

Robert/Robbie Burns Supper in New Hampshire Post

As with ‘Hogmanay‘, the proper way to do ‘Auld Lang Syne‘ with crossed hands
and maybe even the wearing of Red Poppies for Remembrance Day
I kind of feel obliged, as a entrenched Brit, to make sure that you know the
proper way to celebrate the GREAT Robert Burns’ birthday
on January 25.

Hence these posts.

The “Address to the Haggis” is the centerpiece of any read Robert Burns Supper.

So let me help you out with these posts I found after some diligent Googling.

I got Devanee an Asus Windows 7 laptop for Christmas 2011. She loves it but has abused it, beyond belief, since she has had it. Though she has PAID Avast Internet Security installed on it she has managed to get some real bad viruses on it multiple times. I had to buy the Install Disks for it, from Asus, and have reinstalled Windows 7 on it twice. She still has trouble with it. That she physically pounds on it with her fists or throws it on the ground when she gets mad definitely doesn’t help things.

Christmas 2011 and the Asus that lasted 2 years!

Christmas 2011 and the Asus that lasted 2 years!

I knew that I would have to get another computer ‘soon’. ‘Punishing’ her by not getting her a new one wasn’t going to work — though Deanna was adamant that I shouldn’t get her another because of the way she physically batters her Asus. But her not having access to a working PC bothers me. So, I had kind of decided a year ago that her next ‘PC’ was going to be a Chromebook. No Windows 7 for her to mess up. Not easy to get viruses. No hard disk that she can corrupt. Plus, the price was right. So, a year ago I got her to transition to ‘Google Drive’ — though I actually had a fully legit, paid-for Microsoft Office CD and license for her laptop. The 2nd time I reinstalled Windows 7 I didn’t install Office and told her to start using Google Docs. She did. Now a year later she is quite comfortable using Google Docs for ‘Word‘ and ‘PowerPoint‘.

On Tuesday, given that her Asus was lying on the dining room table, I went to use it. It was pretty sick. I knew the time had come. I ordered her this refurbished Acer from Walmart. Price was right, PayPal is giving me 6 months, on-interest to pay for it — and Devanee, using her birthday and Christmas money, is paying for 48% of it. At least by paying for some of it she might feel some sense of ownership and treat it better. I ordered it Wednesday morning and it arrived today, a Saturday, via FedEx Home. That is fast.

The Chromebook principle works — so far. It was up in seconds. No messing about. Chrome did need to be updated, but we are talking minutes rather than the hours to have all the updates installed for a new Windows 7 or Windows 8. Connected to Wi-Fi with no effort. Once she remembered her Gmail account and logged on, Bob really was her uncle. It was all there as was to be expected.

I am happy. It gives her all she needs: Browser, e-mail, YouTube, Google Docs. This Chromebook also happens to have 16GB of Solid State Storage. That is a bonus. I am going to get her a car charger and a GPS USB dongle. It will make one heck of a GPS with its 11.6″ screen. I will keep you posted how this experiment pans out. I think it will be fine. The ideal ‘PC’ for a 13 year old, especially if she had been using Google Drive for a year for her ‘Office’.

Robert Burns Birthday Post

Robert/Robbie Burns Supper in New Hampshire Post

Well, I hope that some of you must have kind of worked out given ALL of the ‘Auld Lang Syne
posts that I have done that I must have some reverence for its author the Scottish Robbie Burns.

Of course I do. Plus, I have associated enough with bona fide Burns experts to know that I am but a fan as opposed to a Burns scholar. C’est la vie.

Kind of surprised that this menu doesn’t have haggis. No, my fondness for Scottish cuisine does not extend to Haggis.

I will try to publicize all of the Burns related activities that might be taking place in N.H. over the next 10 days.

“And fare thee well, …”
