A/2017 U1 — Too Speculative To Claim That It Is ‘Interstellar’.

Definitely extremely interesting and intriguing. Wow. Orbital eccentricity of 1.1922! The greatest we have ever seen — the keywords here being ‘ever seen’. Comet ISON, that crashed and burned on Thanksgiving Day 2013 had an eccentricity of 1.0000015.

But, here is the deal with eccentricity. Anything over 1.0 means that the object will eventually leave our Solar System. That we know. But, what we cannot tell as yet is WHEN A/2017 U1 got that highly eccentric orbit. We just do NOT know — as yet. And maybe never will.

To claim that it must have originated OUTSIDE of our Solar System — is speculative. We do NOT have enough evidence.

NASA/JPL’s official statement confirms that: “So far, everything indicates this is likely an interstellar object, but more data would help to confirm it.” Note the ‘likely‘ and the part about ‘more data … for confirmation‘. That is exactly MY POINT and what I am trying to impress.

The claim that its orbit was NOT influenced by a close encounter with a planet — typically one of the BIG ones — is speculative. It could have been majorly torqued around by Uranus or Neptune. We don’t know.

I have a druthers that this is a very old comet — a periodic one at that, which on its last trip out, maybe 400 years ago got too close to a gas giant and had its orbit turned ‘upside down’.

We don’t know.

All I am stressing is do NOT jump to conclusions.

We know so little about what has happened in OUR Solar System and what is happening right now.

But, it is exciting.

Has a ton of good information about comets.

Uranus Was Discovered 236-Years Ago, By British Astronomer William Herschel.

First planet discovered by a KNOWN person. The other 6 (including Earth) had been known about since antiquity.

As with the discovery of Pluto, I talked about the Uranus discovery in my 2011 full-color, paperback & e-book Devanee’s Book of Dwarf Planets (which is definitely worth looking at (even if I say so myself)).

Pages from my 2011 full-color, paperback & e-book “Devanee’s Book of Dwarf Planets” (which folks still buy on occasion).

I paid a royalty fee to the Lowell Observatory to be able to include the original Clyde Tombaugh plates in the book.

plutodogThis epic discovery, just 2-weeks after Clyde Tombaugh had turned 24, was a BIG deal. The patience and diligence required to spot a small object that had moved, using the ‘Blink Comparator‘, was monumental. These days this is all done in seconds using computers.

Disney’s ‘Pluto’ was named after the new planet — and came to be 7 months later.

How ‘Pluto’ came to be ‘Pluto’ is also quite a cute story and I narrate it all in THE book.

Pluto‘ is NEVER naked eye visible. So, I can’t ask you to go outside and look for Pluto, But, this about Pluto and Clyde Tombaugh today.

Latest composite, color-enriched image of Pluto from NASA’s ‘New Horizon‘.

Venus is the BRIGHT and bigger orb — at the bottom.

Mars is smaller and fainter — and at the top.

The ‘bigger’ light blue orb is Uranus — which is NOT naked eye visible. OK? So you will only see Venus, Mars and the Moon.

Around 6:20 pm, should be best. Venus and Saturn will drop below New Hampshire tree line by 7:40.

Pluto is too small/dim to see naked eye!

Venus, to the left, is the brightest and biggest. Saturn between Venus and Moon. As close to sunset the better — provided it is above the tree line. Venus will have set by 8pm!

Bright ‘Star’ Visible Over New Hampshire, After Sunset In November 2016, Is Actually Venus — Saturn & Mars Also Visible.

by Anura Guruge

As is often the case Venus, given that it is between us and the Sun, tends to be low on the horizon and sets below the horizon quite early. So the best time to see it is with 90 minutes of sunset, in the soutwestern quadrant of the sky. Also look for Saturn and the always orange Mars.

Orange ‘Star’ Over New Hampshire, June – July 2016, Is Actually Mars — Saturn & Jupiter In Conjunction.

by Anura Guruge

nightskynhjune2016dasdad

Hard to miss the distinctly orange orb, that is Mars, if you go out around 9 – 10pm. Saturn, Mars & Jupiter are in a straight line (as they should be, this the so called ‘ecliptic‘). Jupiter could be below the tree line — especially as it gets later.
