Why I Despair So About The Schools Around Here.

by Anura Guruge

This was an actual sheet from Grade 5 ‘Science’ that
Teischan (10) brought home from Alton Central School (ACS),
Alton, New Hampshire this week.

I normally don’t say anything about ‘slip-ups’ other than maybe draw
Teischan’s attention to it … and say “this is not exactly right”.

But, this was BEYOND the pale.

There are so many things wrong with this at SO many levels.

First and foremost, EVERY SINGLE answer written down by my Teischan is wrong!

Yes, every SINGLE answer is WRONG.

And she gets a “SMILEY” face?

I wanted to cry.

No comments? No corrections?

That is what got my goat. EVERY SINGLE answer is wrong!

No it is NOT her multiplication.

She only got ONE of those wrong and it is so blatant that a semi-proficient 4th grader would see it.

So now we have ALL the ANSWERS are wrong PLUS one multiplication is wrong.

There is an asterisk (*) next to ‘Pluto‘. Can you see that?

What does that asterisk (*) pertain to?

The title says “What is your weight on each planet?

Well, ‘Pluto’ is NOT a planet though ACS has historically had issues coming to terms with that. See this … IF you are interest. But, I am willing to concede that that is probably what the asterisk (*) was meant to be.

But the second line says “Outer Space”. “Outer Space” is NOT a planet! There is NO asterisk (*) against it.

Yes, one of my many faults is that I am a terrible pedant. I put a lot of stock in accuracy.

I am sure that I have read that you should never give kids printed statements that are factually incorrect …

But that is minor in the scheme of this.

Yes, this upset me.

Yes, of course, I am fully aware that to err is human and erring is something that I do daily. But, I expect a little diligence from my teachers.

NO, I rarely criticize teachers. This is probably the first time in 5 years! Yes, I cut school administrators no slack, BUT I try not to criticize teachers.

But, this incident aggrieves me on another front. This science teacher is one of a triumvirate that unilaterally decided that ACS Grade 5 should not have ANY math or science homework. Just 4 days ago, I told them, to their face, that MAYBE they decided on that because that meant less things for them to MARK.

Well, I guess ‘MARKING’ is not their strong suit. I guess I should just SMILE. Draw a BIG SMILEY face.

And for the record. I teach. I have taught. My mother was a teacher. My father was a teacher. Two of my aunties were teachers. Our name, ‘Guruge’, literally means: ‘from the house of the teacher’. So I kind of know a little about this and definitely have skin in the game.

Let me again STRESS.

I would NOT have said ANYTHING about this sheet if there were ONLY three or four things wrong on it.

But when there are fourteen (14) mistakes on it I feel the need to vent.

P.S., Teischan has NO IDEA what ‘lb’ stands for!

BUT, alas, we are UNLIKELY to see it. CLOUDS!

Plus, our other usual problem — trees. Yes, the tree line may get in the way unless you can get above that.

But, I fear that all day/evening tomorrow is going to overcast. Shame.

A rather rare treat. 5 major planets, in conjunction — in nearly a straight line (clearly illustrating the nearly flat orbital plane, the ‘ecliptic’) — across the morning sky, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter (in that order, left to right, South to Southwest).

Pluto is right below Mercury but not visible to the naked eye. The Moon, fairly full and bright, will be just to the right of Jupiter.

Trees will again be a problem for us in New Hampshire. Mercury could be in the tree line.

The planets are RISING from the South. Mercury, the last to rise, only comes over the horizon (but definitely in the trees) at 5:47 am Eastern. That is why I am suggesting around 6:30 am.

They keep on rising, BUT so does the Sun! Sunrise around 7:15. That will end the show.

That Bright ‘Star’ Above The Moon Tonight, Over New Hampshire, Is Jupiter. It Was Alongside Yesterday. Looks Like Venus, But It Is Not.

Yes, earlier in the month it was Venus that was close to the Moon.

Now it is Jupiter, because they all move about — nothing stays still up there.

Venus is still around and visible in the Southwest sky, very close to the horizon, but setting BELOW the horizon by 7:30 pm. 5:30 pm, directly SW, is a good time to see Venus.

Enjoy Jupiter. It was spectacular last night — beautiful opposite conjunction with the full Moon. Today it will be above the Moon. While you are at it take a gander at Orion and soak in its grandeur.

The bigger yellow blob is the Sun.

Underlying ‘star’ charts extracted from neave.com/planetarium/

Early on in the ‘evening’ close to the Moon, in the Southwest, is Venus
— very big and bright.

Two days ago we had the perfect ‘Moon trying to eat Venus’ conjunction
(the ‘crescent and star‘ symbol that appears on Islamic flags).

Later on at night, STARTING in the East,
it is Jupiter.

But, as we spin around, everything in the night sky moves from East to West.

So during the night Jupiter will swing from East to West —
as the two images above show.

Every night around 10:45, before starting my 3rd shift, I take the dogs out.

In the Winter I always look up, towards the East, to see Jupiter.

During the Winter, night-by-night, Jupiter will be, at the same time, say 10:45, further West.

That is because we are all going around the Sun …

Neptune, Uranus and Pluto are up there too — BUT, not naked eye visible. OK?

I am, and have been for decades, a great fan of ‘National Geographic’. It is one of the few magazines that we continue to subscribe and do so without fail.

I dived into the July 2013 cover story about the ‘Solar System’ as this is very germane to the work I have been doing on 4 Vesta and Comet ISON (C/2012 S1).

There is at least one huge howler that tungsten and titanium nitride could only have been created by the Sun. WRONG.

So, for the first time in my life I wrote a letter to the Nat. G. Editors.

This conjunction has been there for the last few days, but if you recall it has been raining or cloudy the last few nights. It is a tad cloudy in the west tonight, around 8:50 pm. Trees are also a big problem for us.

The challenge here is that these three stars are setting below the horizon rather than rising. Yes, a bummer. So my 9:30 pm they would be below the skyline. I have a feeling we are not going to see them, even though tomorrow is said to be clear, unless you can get above the tree line — facing west.

But, don’t say I didn’t give you a heads up. Enjoy if you can. Quite rare.
