An Inexcusably Callous & Unfortunate Incident With The New Hampshire Red Cross.

This is SPECIFIC to this 1 incident
with
New Hampshire Red Cross.

This does NOT apply to the Red Cross as a whole.

My wife is a Red Cross blood donor. During this COVID-19 pandemic she has been trying to do her bit by giving blood (as often as she can).

She had two appointments cancelled. We understand. In each case, however, she received an e-mail the day before telling her of the cancellation.

She was all excited when she got today’s appointment — though it was on a Saturday, in Wakefield. Wakefield is a 50-minute drive, one-way. But, she was fine with that.

She tends to have a low iron count, so she for the last week she was doing all these things the Red Cross tells her she should eat: like eating bowl fulls of Cheerios, taking more multivitamins, drinking even more water etc. etc.

She was checking her e-mails for cancellations. NOTHING.

She checked again this morning. NOTHING.

We left around noon for the 1pm appointment in Wakefield.

We get there. The parking lot is EMPTY. Nobody there.

She calls the Red Cross. It is 1pm. They CONFIRM she has a 1pm appointment in Wakefield.

The building we are at — standing outside — happens to also house the Wakefield Police. I tell my wife to talk to the police. They won’t let her come in. She has to talk through an intercom. They make some calls. They said that others had called too. They eventually tell her that it is CANCELLED. It is now 1:30pm.

She is very upset. She is close to tears. I am glad I went — and I did so hoping to walk around Lovell Lake while she gave blood.

She is very upset. (Did I already say that?)

We come home. We have wasted OVER 2 hours.

She calls the Red Cross again. She gets an Arizona call center.

They initially CONFIRM that she still has a 1pm appointment. It is now past 2pm. Then they check another system and says: “Ooops! Sorry. It was cancelled this morning!

She then gets the above cancellation e-mail. It is time-stamped 2:36pm — for what WAS a 1pm appointment.

NOT BLOODY GOOD.

Very inconsiderate.

Very incompetent.

Not impressed.

Not happy.

She is very upset. Ruined her whole day.

Yes, we understand that in the scheme of things, this is relatively minor.

But, it would have been so easy to avoid it.

At best they would have had 60 appointments — BUT, I doubt that. It was probably under 40.

If they sent that gentleman an e-mail at 9:33am they could have sent my wife one too in that time period.

Somebody at New Hampshire Red Cross should explain. Somebody at New Hampshire Red Cross should be …

And in case YOU are wondering why I do not donate blood.

They don’t WANT MY BLOOD. Not good enough. I used to give blood, here & in the U.K. And NO, I do NOT have ANY infections. My blood is GOOD. They just don’t want it.

Why?

Have a guess. It is because I am British. I kid you bloody NOT. Go check. They will not accept blood from anyone who has any connection with Britain.

Why?

Try and remember. Remember? Mad Bloody Cow!

It started snowing in Alton around 1:30pm.

By 4pm it was coming down at quite a clip. Very pretty.

These pictures were taken between 6 and 7pm. Eventful evening. 6 vehicle accident ‘down the road’ and heavy police presence with flashing blue lights.

It wasn’t too cold. I was out taking pictures — multiple times.

Shoveling starts tomorrow. Hopefully it shouldn’t be too onerous. Bought a new shovel today.

Enjoy. I hear the snow plow go by even as I type this.

This was around 6pm tonight. It was snowing quite hard — and there was a major accident down the road.

Teischan and I love seeing our red and green lasers bouncing off the snow flakes. Managed to capture it, fairly well, tonight. Pretty cool.

Had to clean the snow off the laser lens a few times. It was falling that heavy.

a snowy blue night in Alton New Hampshire Anura Guruge Sony a6500

Just after 6pm, with it snowing hard, I went out, just in my sweats, to take some pictures. Noticed that the sky was blue down the road. Kind of suspected that it might be police. So, had to have a look. About 300 yards. Walked out, in my sweats. The dogs followed, off lead. It was a police car. They had blocked the road — Prospect Mountain Road. 6 vehicle pile up below. I only managed to get one ‘acceptable’ picture. With the heavy snow and light, it was not easy.

The blue police lights reflecting off the snow was COOL. As you can see. Teischan came out looking for the dogs, with their leashes. That is her, at the top, coming back — the dogs still off their leashes. We went back — again, once I put on a jacket and boots. Crazy night.

I liked the blue sky.

This suffice to say is extremely distressing and aggravating even if you are not a dog person (as we are). Deanna saw this earlier today and was most upset and wanted me to cover it ASAP.

It is hard to fathom how this could have gone on for this long, in affluent Wolfeboro — the ‘Oldest Summer Resort in America’ and home to celebrities like Mitt Romney NOT to mention the world capital of heated driveways to avoid shoveling snow. Yes, to be fair the mansion is on a back road in a very secluded part of town.

I am very fond of Wolfeboro and my association with Wolfeboro goes back 26 years. Wolfeboro is a beautiful town and some of the nicest people I know either live or work there. So, I hate seeing stuff like this associated with Wolfeboro. There was a move to boycott Wolfeboro in 2014 because of its then openly racist police chief. But, that, luckily, is behind us now. But, there is still a dark cloud over Wolfeboro — the ‘unsolved’ murder of local mother Stacey Burns over 8 years ago! This horror as such is another black eye for Wolfeboro.

The police and all the associated agencies appear to have done well in terms of the rescue and the arrest. But, that still begs the question as to how this could have gone on for this long without anybody suspecting anything.

This sorry incident raises a number of issues and the need for some New Hampshire laws to be changed:

  1. Appears that the perpetrator of this evil, Christina Fay, despite her apparent wealth, will NOT be on the hook to pay for ANY of the huge costs that will be associated with taking care of these 84 dogs! That is wrong, wrong, wrong. The law should be changed, at once, to make sure that perpetrators are fully liable for all costs and that the State can go after all of their property.
    ….
  2. It appears that she managed to skirt the requirements for a Commercial Breeder License. That too is wrong. How can you have 84 dogs and still claim not to be a Commercial Breeder, That has to be looked into.
    ….
  3. Right now she has only been charged with two misdemeanors! 84-dogs and only two misdemeanors. That is NOT right.

Read about us at the 2016 Philadelphia Mummers Parade in this post.

We had a ball. I was allowed, with never a word being uttered, to be in the THICK of the parade, among the participants, taking pictures. Very heavy police presence BUT they were the epitome of probity. They did not interfere for the sake of interfering. They watched, carefully and if there were no real problems they just stood there and smiled. Their attitude was much appreciated by all and it was good to see how popular they were. Folks made a point of shaking hands with them and wishing them a ‘Happy New Year‘. All good to see.

MummersNYBYT232

We were in Philadelphia for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 2016. We were in New York City for 3 days prior to that but had decided we didn’t want to do the ‘Ball’ at Times Square.

I had never heard of the Philadelphia “Mummers Parade” until I started making plans for the trip — though we are quite familiar with “Mummers” since the “Mummers Play” is always the central theme of Part II of all Christmas Revels performances. The Parade was going to be the highlight of our January 1 — that also being our Wedding Anniversary (now 13 years).

We heard conflicting stories as to where we should watch the Parade from. In the end we ended up watching it from the south side of City Hall, pretty close to the start and within the City Hall ‘square’ itself. Wasn’t a bad place. Wasn’t overly crowded. Lots of police presence BUT extremely low key, unobtrusive and totally unofficious. It was a pleasant revelations. They let ‘photographers’ — and by that they meant anybody with a camera — freely go in and out of the barriers so that they could take pictures right from the parade route itself. That meant that I was allowed to be right in the THICK of the parade with the Mummers happily walking around me. They LOVED being photographed. They stopped and posed. They thanked us. They gave us beads. It was a blast.

I took 640 pictures with my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000!

We were there for 2 hours. It wasn’t bitterly cold but by noon we were ready for a hot lunch.

Deanna probably took at least 300 and Devanee quite a few.

I will post the pictures, some of which came out quite well, soon — in batches.

For now let me share these two short video clips that I shot with the FZ1000.

I would go back again — happily (as long as it is not too cold). But now at least we know some of the parameters.

As somebody who lived in Gilford for 8 years (6 of it 2 doors away from ‘THE’ beach) I am distressed that these two citations were issued for toplessness on the beach. It never even occurred to me that there were beach specific ordinances. One thing that totally puzzles me is the statement that the police ASKED if any of the women wanted to be cited! That seems very incongruous and could be interesting when the case comes up in front of a judge in October. That said I am glad that this came to be. Now the legality of such ordinances can be put to the test. A claim that Gilford beach is ‘private’ made me chuckle. IF I remember right you need a ‘beach pass’ to bring a vehicle to the beach. Wonder whether this ‘private’ aspect will now raise its ugly head. Yikes.

I am so proud of the Laconia Police! That they showed undue restraint at Weirs is magic. Kudos to the department and the Commissioners.

Well, this is progress.

RAVE. RAVE. RAVE.

Sea Bird, Center Street, Wolfeboro, NH
THE BEST Chinese restaurant for miles and miles around.

That we are huge fans of the ‘Sea Bird’ in Wolfeboro is no great secret — as at least three posts on this blog will clearly attest, loud and clear.

They are very good about supporting local events with advertising dollars.

What is there not to like? The ‘Sea Bird’ has tasty food, generous portions, wonderfully friendly staff and very affordable prices. I don’t know. That seems like a pretty good formula. If you get to know the owners, Guy Phu and Lan Sam, it becomes even more special. Very nice, ‘salt of the Earth’, couple. Very family-oriented and down to earth. We are very fond of them. We like them and the Sea Bird so much that it has now become our default venue for celebrating our ‘January 1’ wedding anniversary. That has to mean something given that we are not ‘shy’ about driving an hour to go for dinner.

Here is another data point. This last Wednesday we had lunch in Wolfeboro with a friend. So five people. It was five people again last night. Three adults and our two brats. Yet again we had two drinks. But the check at the Sea Bird, for considerably more food (if not a view of The Lake), was $40 cheaper! That, in my book, is no small potatoes.

Yes, we went there last night after ‘Snow White‘ at the Kingswood. We had been foiled in December after the Northeastern Ballet ‘Nutcracker’. But, that was Winter and this was Summer. Teischan, my little prima donna, is very specific about what she expects of Dad after her ballet performances. She needs roses and she needs to be taken out for dinner. She likes Chinese — or at least Fried Rice. When we sat down she said she wanted a ‘Shirley Temple’ and two orders of Fried Rice. Well we didn’t get two orders of Fried Rice but we got quite a bit.

Anyhow, I had not bothered to check or call ahead last night to make sure that they would be open after the show. It was Summer. We pull up just past 9 pm. It looked closed! I went up to the door. Ooops! It said Friday & Saturday closed at 9pm. I saw Guy, seated at a table, eating his dinner. I didn’t disturb him. I walked back to the car. He must have seen that somebody had come to the door. When I got to the car he was standing at the window. I didn’t want to be rude. So I went up again. As soon as he saw me he opened the door and insisted that I come in. I told him that it was ‘O.K’. We understood. He would not have none of it. Insisted that we all come in and have dinner — no hurry, take our time. We had taken a retired Alton Central teacher with us to the show. So she was with us too. Guy had let the waitstaff go for the night. Lan, with their kids, were on vacation. So it was just Guy. But we had a great meal and great time. Suffice to say it was just us. He gave us our customary table in the corner. He did all the serving and in between we would chat. It was sublime. The kids are very comfortable there. Lan has spoiled them. So they can be loud. Didn’t matter. We had the place to ourselves.

The food, as ever, was good. We had two boxes left over. We are still eating it today.

So, we just want to make a point.

IF you are in Wolfeboro and want a good meal go to the Sea Bird.

IF you are within 35 miles of Wolfeboro, NH and fancy a GOOD, affordable Chinese go to the Sea Bird.

Phu Jee’s in Meredith, which is also very good, is Guy’s brother. Notice the name. Guy Phu.

Bottom Line. Sea Bird, in Wolfeboro, soars above others when it comes to Good Chinese in the Lakes Region. If you don’t believe me check their online reviews.
