Still ahead of 11/11. My first time in public of late. SMILE. Yes, one of my Canadian ‘red poppies’ and I am cool with that since this now time-honored tradition is all due to Canadians. The truth be told, when it comes to the paper ones, I only have Canadian poppies. That is OK. I do need to get some U.K. ones with the green leaf and the more pronounced black ‘button’.

Nobody but nobody commented on it. 98% of Americans have absolutely NO CLUE as to what it is and what it signifies though Americans fought in both Wars — though they were not at ‘Flanders Field‘ in 1915. I would love to see America adopt the custom. I have tried. I wrote to President Obama asking whether he would please wear one on Veterans Day.

Well, as I do every year, I set out to honor the fallen and keep the memory fresh and alive.

Last year’s picture.

Yet again I have to thank my new friend, Craigie, in Halifax, Yorkshire, for bringing this to my attention on Facebook. Thank you, again, Craigie. I have come to realize that she is even MORE of a ‘red poppy’ devotee than I — and that takes some doing.

St John’s, Slimbridge is in Gloucestershire, England. All of England is beautiful, Gloucestershire one of the nicest, most verdant parts.

Amazingly clever. Bravo. So evocative and spot on. I initially thought they were made out of clear plastic. I was wrong. Wire mesh. How brilliant.

And it works so, so well. I am humbled.

When I first saw the pictures it reminded me of the ‘Korean War Memorial’ in Washington, D.C. But, on reflection they are very different. I think the Slimbridge ghosts are so realistic. Wow.

I really am in awe.

The opening ceremony. Doesn’t show much, alas, of the field per se.

Wanted to share this with you. Of course, this the mother ‘Minster‘ for the U.K., does something memorable each Remembrance DayPoppy Day — i.e., November 11.

Riveting & Evocative ‘Red Poppy’ Display At Yorkshire’s ‘Hull Minister’ For ‘Remembrance Day’ 2019.

Yet again I have to thank my new friend in the UK, Craigie, in bonny Yorkshire to boot, for bringing this to my attention. I think she is even MORE of a ‘red poppy’ devotee than I — if that is possible (though in her case it sure seems so).

This just made my day. So happy & proud that folks are going to this much trouble though as causes go, this is up there. So many gave their life for liberty, justice and peace.

This is NOT the only amazing display taking place in a UK church. I will try and cover more — hopefully with Craigie’s help.

A tad late this year, but that is OK. Yes, one of my Canadian ‘red poppies’ and I am cool with that since this now time-honored tradition is all due to Canadians. Thank you, Craigie. It was time I got going. Only a week left to ‘Remembrance Day‘ 2019.

Over the last few years I have done a fair amount to educate folks, especially in the U.S., on the ‘Red Poppy‘ significance and our British tradition of ‘Poppy Day‘ — on November 11th each year.

This tutorial, by the ‘mothership’, so to speak, will help.

Mercury Will Transit The Sun On November 11, 2019 — Remembrance Day, At That.

by Anura Guruge

YOU  will need Eclipse Glasses.

A ‘transit‘ in astronomy is when celestial body passes in front of another. In this case, it will be Mercury passing in front of the Sun — and we, in New England, will have front-row seats for it, and, moreover, it will be in the morning, around 10 am Eastern. The only thing that can spoil it for us is the weather. I will keep you posted.

Given that this is a solar transit, it is kind of like a solar eclipse — like the BIG one we had in August 2017. And as with a solar eclipse you MUST HAVE eclipse glasses IF you are going to look at the Sun. They are cheap enough. Better get some now. I still have mine from 2017.

That it is on Remembrance Day — my Poppy Day — makes it even more special. WOW.
