Tropical Storm ‘Isaias’ Was 80-Miles To The West, BUT Eversource Still Manage To Lose Power, in Alton (NH), For 8-Hours.

Typical. Did NOT expect anything else from (bloody) Eversource.

We knew this was coming. Eversource is so predictable.

Yes, we had SOME blowing. Nothing major. NO TREES FELL AROUND HERE. We know! We drove around for an hour, at 10pm, looking for any fallen trees. A few small branches down.

Nothing to warrant an 8-hour power outage. Bloody Eversource.

Eversource only has about 160 customers in Alton. We are at the END of a line. No customers beyond us. The line ends with us, in Alton. So, more often than not, Eversource has no incentive or motivation to keep us going.

I am CONVINCED that somebody at an Eversource distribution center turns off our power during a storm so that the juice can be used somewhere else.

That power was restored at 3:14AM proves my point. There is NO WAY, no way in hell, that crews were out there at 3am moving downed trees & splicing power cables.

ONLY way power is restored at 3:14am is by somebody sitting at a station ‘pressing a button’.

Bloody Eversource.

Thanks To Eversource (PSNH) We Lost Power 3 (Plus) Times In The Last 4-Days (i.e., Since Friday).

by Anura Guruge

Yes, I fully understand & appreciate that we had some bad weather of late and that some poor souls lost power for multiple-days at a stretch.

And I also THANK & give kudos to Eversource — as I did in October 2019 — when they get it right (and go the extra mile).

Not so the last few days.

We lost power THIS MORNING — i.e., Monday morning. There was NO bloody reason for that. Yes, there was LIGHT snow falling, but NO wind and no ice.

Ditto, Saturday morning. No wind. No ice. NOTHING. Just Eversource being cussed.

I was RESIGNED to losing power Friday. Yes, there was some wind. I will concede that. But, it was a JOKE. Power was coming on and going off — all bloody night. Ruined one of my UPS units. No chance that Eversource will pay for a replacement.

I do NOT like Eversource. Yes, I will THANK THEM on occasion BUT they are NOT a good, decent company that cares of its customers.

KUDOS To Eversource (PSNH) They Did GOOD In The October 17, 2019 Storm.

by Anura Guruge

I am the first to bust their chops and rant-&-rave when they have an ‘uncalled’ for outage. But, in the same token I do give them credit when they do good.

They did good today.

Immensely exceeded my expectations (though my expectations were not very high and I was hunkering down for a 3-day outage).

Yes, the winds did howl early this morning. Woke us up.

I was HOPING that we would not lose power but we did — not sure when, maybe around 4am (possibly earlier).

I knew they wouldn’t even TRY to restore power prior to daylight, provided the rains & winds abated.

I had a cup of coffee in bed around 8:30, as is my won’t. We have a gas stove and that still work.

Then, suitably sustained, I went out and hooked up our two generators in a slight rain. They both worked first time, which is always a relief. Got everything squared away. Had power. Started taking my shower.

Power came back. Must have been around 10am. I am IMPRESSED and THANKFUL.

I let the generators run for another 40-minutes while I completed my ablutions. I like to get them an extended run every few months to stop them from rusting.

So, all was good.

Not so with BLOODY Atlantic Broadband. They have a widespread outage NOT related to the storm. They really suck.

8.89cent/kWh Electric Rate In New Hampshire Till 2021 From “North American Power” — I Am Locked In.

by Anura Guruge

I got THE letter in the mail today. So, it is official, I am locked in and there is nothing further I have to do.

I am happy. It was pretty painless and quick to RENEW with ‘North American Power‘. Yes, I had been with them, uninterrupted, for quite a few years. So, it was a straight, straightforward renewal.

I did the renewal, over the phone (since they do NOT permit it online), on August 29, 2019. Letter is dated August 30, 2019. So, that was pretty efficient.

It is actually LOWER than what I was paying for the last two-years, though the rate is for 14-months as opposed to 24-months. But, I can live with that.

I am getting a 8.89¢/kWh for 14-months starting October 2019.

Pope Francis Getting Trapped In An Elevator For 25 Minutes Ultimate Proof That He Has NO SPECIAL Standing With God.

by Anura Guruge

Click image for ‘Reuters’ original. Good for more, much more.

One of the eight (or nine) OFFICIAL TITLES held by the pope is Vicarius Christi (Vicar of Christ). That means he is Christ’s REPRESENTATIVE on Earth.

This has always supposed to signify that the Pope’s had a SPECIAL, UNIQUE relationship with God. Essentially a hot line with God.

Well I have always suspected that.

Pope Francis can’t even stop the fires in the Amazon. That has to be trivial for God.

Now this. God lets this happen to him?

So, you can only come up with the following rationalizations:

    1. God has one heck of a sense of humor and likes making Pope Francis the butt of it more often than not.
       …
    2.  God is like Trump and does not feel any obligation to take care of those that work for him directly.
      ….
    3. There is NO GOD!
      ….
    4. God is impotent — as in being powerless.
      ….
    5. Pope Francis is not Vicarius Christi.

What do YOU think? You decide. But, it was very telling. Pope stuck in an elevator for 25 minutes and late for his Sunday noontime Angelus.

New Hampshire Electricity Rates: I Got A 8.89cent/kWh Rate For 14-Months From “North American Power”.

What I had for the last 2-years.

Wow. It is actually LOWER than what I was paying for the last two-years, though the rate is for 14-months as opposed to 24-months. But, I can live with that.

They, as they promise, send me a renewal notice a couple of weeks ago. I had until mid-September to make a choice. I decided to get it done today.

Not sure why, but ‘North American Power‘ now insists that YOU have to call for everything. Kind of made me leery. They hadn’t quoted a renewal price and I was concerned that they would try to stick me with a much higher rate than what I was paying currently. I need not have worried.

I did a quick check on New Hampshire rates last night.

I liked the ‘North American Power’ 14-month 8.89¢/kWh. I was willing to stay with them if I could get it.

I called this morning. After the usual, tedious, verification process and having been put on hold for about 5-minutes, she quoted me that rate and apologized for it being just 14-months.

But, I was happy. 14-months takes me up the end of 2020. That was good enough.

I have now been with ‘North American Power‘ for over 4-years. So far, so good. No drama. They just seem to tick along. That is fine with I.

So, that is the story. I am getting a 8.89¢/kWh for 14-months starting October 2019.

Had A Biasi B10/5, With Riello Burner, Installed In Central New Hampshire, Yesterday, For $5,800.

by Anura Guruge

Biasi B10/5 Riello burner New Hampshire Anura Guruge

9 days ago I walked into our downstairs utility room and discovered a huge puddle of water under the ‘Smith Cast Iron‘ boiler. The damn thing, just 12-years old, had sprung a leak. When we finally took it apart yesterday we discovered that there were indeed two leaks and that one was a slow leak that had been there for quite a long time. Suffice to say, I was not amused.

My oil company, noted for their duplicity, could not wait to give me two ‘just-for-you‘ quotes. The first was $10,000 (to the dot) for a System 2000. The other was for $8,800 for a Biasi B10/4.

At that juncture I knew more about the Moon than I knew about boilers. I had never had one fail on me, and as such never had to get one.

But, as some of you know I am a quick learner when I have to be. And this warranted some serious research. So, I got cracking.

The System 2000, which looks like a futuristic spacecraft, is indeed the Cadillacs of boilers (though there is also a Rolls Royce). The System 2000 can have a 93% efficiency. But, they are expensive. The Biasi is 87% efficient.

A lot of people swear (in a good way) by the Biasi. It is a proven solution and the local HVAC guy I called for competing quote said that he has a Biasi at his house.

I checked and checked.

Discovered that the Biasi B10/4 that my duplicitous oil company was trying to foist on me was TOO SMALL for my needs. I needed the B10/5 which was at least $200 more. So, the oil company price was in the $9,000 range.

But, the oil company (and have I mentioned that they are duplicitous) was going to rip off everything I had — including water tank and 5 circulators — and put ‘new’ stuff in. But, there was nothing wrong with any of this stuff. Not even any stains. I did, however, need a new expansion tank.

The local HVAC guy, who I found on the Interweb, quoted me $5,800, fully installed, for a Biasi B10/5 with Riello burner and a new expansion tank. And that included hauling the old boiler away.

That seemed a fair price.

It was a full $3,000 lower than the duplicitous oil company quote for the SMALLER Biasi (i.e., B10/4 rather than B10/5). But, to be fair, it was not apples to apples since the duplicitous oil company was replacing everything (though I would not have been surprised if they used old components they obtained from a previous job). But, the local guys quote was still probably $1400 cheaper. Plus, he was a one-man shop and seemed decent enough.

Well it was installed Monday without too much drama – though we lost power halfway through. But, since I had both my generators going he had all the power needed.

So, far so good. It is not quiet. About as loud as the old unit. I gather the S2000 is whisper quiet.

Well, right now, I am NOT going to tell you the name of the local HVAC guy. If you want to know contact me. I want to wait a month or so to see that everything is hunky-dory with the install.

So, that is my story.

Plus, now, if you are looking for a price you know what I paid. I know the wholesale price for the Biasi B10/5 is around $2,200. But there is lot more bits needed than just the furnace and then there is the labor. It is a big job. Just moving the 500 pound boiler is no small task. And then there was also the old boiler and I gave them a hand moving that.

So, overall I think I did ‘OK’.

Heat flow in a 3-pass Biasi B10. Heats more than with a single-pass boiler.

6-Hour (‘Scummy’) Eversource (PSNH) Power Outage In Alton (NH) — February 25, 2019.

by Anura Guruge

I knew that scummy Eversource would manage to stage a power outage for us. They are so damn predictable.

Yes, there was SOME wind, but it was NOT that bad this far up North. Look at the map. The winds were strongest further South.

Alton, who gets power from the Co-Op, did NOT lose power. Just frigging Eversource.

This was damn Eversource at their scummy, despicable best. I really resent them, I hate them so much that I would part with a kidney if I could get a different supplier!

As far as I am concerned they are the scummiest company I have the misfortune to deal with. Yes, I am not amused.

Yes, I had both generators going. So, we were OK. But, there was NO need for a 6-hour outage. Wind damage up here was NON EXISTENT.

40-Minute Eversource (PSNH) Power Outage In Alton (NH) — June 18, 2018.

by Anura Guruge

It was from around 7:05 to about 7:45pm, on Monday, June 18, 2018. We, in Alton, New Hampshire, were having but light rain — but we know there were thunderstorm to the South of us.

We were watching Episode 2 of “Anne Frank Diaries” on Acorn TV went all went dark.

We were the first to call to report an outage.

To be fair to Eversource (a.k.a. ‘Eversore’) this appears to be the first outage we have had since November 29, 2017 — i.e., 201-days!

WOW. 201-days.

In November 2017 we had three (3) outages in the month.

Well, I am not complaining.

On January 3, 2018, in anticipation of the “Bomb Cyclone” snow storm we had got a new generator — our 3rd. This was meant to be a backup for the other two — we needing two generators to power up 70% of the house.

Well today was the first time I got to use the new generator, a 7,000-watt Troy-Bilt (from Lowes), with electric start, in action. Once I remembered how to start it, it started first time. [I have now put a sticker on the switch I need to have on ‘ON’ before the electric starter kicks-in!]

So, that alone was good. I like to run my generators for 30-minutes every 6-weeks or so to prevent rust. So, this achieved that.

Glad power came back ….

I was expecting it to be out till the early hours of the morning.

“Bomb Cyclone” Nor’easter Storm, New Hampshire — January 4, 2018.

As I write this at 9:03pm (Eastern) the wind is HOWLING and rattling the house — and this is a BIG, solid house.

I am braced waiting for the power to go off! 3rd row — middle — a NEW generator! We are now a 3 generator family! Need 2 to run the house and with this cold it would be irresponsible not to have a backup since the house would FREEZE solid within 10 hours.

At 4:15pm, when we went out for the second time to shovel snow, we had had 10″ snow — on the front steps. Since then we probably have exceeded the 12″ mark.

The snow is bad BUT I can live with it and survive it.

It is the WIND that is the killer — especially when we lose power. That is, alas, NOT funny.

The Christmas laser, which is still out there, mainly because it is frozen solid, makes pretty pictures on the snow.
