Why I Am Way Beyond Being An Atheist: Part II … Floods At Lourdes, The Marian Miracle Center Of The Universe.

by Anura Guruge

From Facebook.

Lourdes with its Marian (i.e., Virgin Mary, mother of Christ) Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes — the place that millions visit a year to pray for miracles!

This is why the 2nd image (above) just cracked me up. They want us to pray for Lourdes. Sacré bleu. People go to Lourdes to pray — and now you want us to pray for Lourdes. That is like being told to bring coal to Newcastle!

If the Virgin Mary has decided to turn a blind eye on Lourdes, her spiritual home on earth, who am I to try and intercede. She, according to her army of followers, is all powerful. So, my take is very simplistic. I am going to let her take care of this.

Q.E.D., As To Why I Do Not Believe In Prayer — Irrespective Of Religion & Culture.

by Anura Guruge

church

From the “Chicago Tribune”. Happened December 10, 2016. Google for much more.

Q.E.D. = “quod erat demonstrandum”, in Latin, of course, which denotes “that which was to be demonstrated”.

I fully understand and appreciate those who justify all of these hard-to-fathom calamities by insisting: God does not interfere, God does not micromanage or ‘Free Will‘.

I am happy to buy that.

But, what I do not understand is why these same people PRAY and advocate prayer.

IF God does not interfere, micromanage or go against the “Free Will” granted to humans, why pray? That is asking God to interfere?

Do NOT get it?

Which is why I do NOT pray, haven’t for over 45 years, and do NOT believe in prayer.

IF anybody should believe in prayer it should be I. As I have talked about many times before my adopted mother was a much revered ‘queen of prayer’. She prayed all the time! And the beauty of her prayers were that they were cross-religion. She prayer to multiple deities across religions and she picked the BEST one for her given situation. It was a science with her. Up until my early teens, I like so many others, were in awe of her powers of prayer. Then I started to get skeptical. And eventually I saw the light.

As is my wont, I don’t have anything against those that pray. Each to their own. I just don’t get it.

Pax.

Prayer, At Best, Is But A Form Of “Brain Meditation” — And That Is Good.

by Anura Guruge

prayermediat

THINK about what I just said up there (↑).

Prayer, irrespective of who you pray to (and as such its religious connotation), focuses your brain, and thereby ‘centers you’, for a brief period of time. That is MAGIC. Just that short burst of focus is a form of “Brain Meditation“.

So the reason that so many feel GOOD about praying — and do so immediately afterwards — is because they have just indulged in some “Brain Meditation“.

You can achieve the same succor by just doing any other form of “Brain Meditation“.

As those of you who know me know, I do NOT pray. I do NOT believe in prayer. I think that praying is a superstitious waste of time.

And this from one whose adoptive mother was considered by many, including lots of Western Christians, to possess SUPERNATURAL PRAYING POWERS!

Yep, my adoptive mother, in her latter years, was like a walking-talking ‘Lourdes’. People came to her, often bearing lavish gifts (mainly in the form of expensive chocolates, flowers or pastries), asking her to PRAY on their behalf. I still vividly remember a Director General of UNESCO, a very elegant (and personable) Spaniard, and his wife, coming to visit so that they could ask my mother to PRAY that their son, who was sitting an exam in a few days in order to qualify as a doctor, would do well in the exam. My mother prayed with them and continued to do so afterwards on their behalf. She prayed, unashamedly, to an eclectical pantheon of deities — at least one of them a then living human (Sai Baba). Though she would be mightily offended IF anybody said she was anything but the MOST devout of Buddhists, she when it came to praying, prayed to anyone and anybody that she believed could intercede.

She prayed to the Abrahamic God. She always had a supply of genuine Lourdes Water (which wasn’t that difficult for her given that she lived in Paris (France) and as the extremely indulged wife of a rather rich Ambassador (with multiple pensions) had the resources and contacts to get most things she wanted). She prayed to Hindu gods. She was huge Sai Baba fan who gave Sai Baba a LOT of money over the years.

She believed in prayer. She prayed a LOT. She prayed for me BUT that never worked. Maybe that is when I started to question prayer.

[And there are people, a Catholic bishop here and there and definitely a few Catholic priests, who still pray that I will find my way … ]

To me the pope praying AFTER an earthquake is just STUPID. He should have been praying BEFORE to avoid it from happening.

And PLEASE do not give me grief that you can’t pray to God to micro-manage and intercede. IF so, why the heck was the Pope leading 11,000 in prayer yesterday. Give me a break.

But, as you also know I do not interfere or object to the religious beliefs of others — even if they are totally contrary to what I believe in (which is NOTHING). So I am happy that people pray. They are indulging in some “Brain Meditation” and that is GOOD. I am all in favor.

Pray Tell Me, Who Does The Dalai Lama Pray To?

by Anura Guruge

From “USA Today”. Click image to access original.

The notion of prayer in general confuses me, and seeing so called ‘Buddhists‘ pray really confounds me.

Very simple, from my understanding of prayer, you pray to a ‘higher being‘ that can in someway intercede in matters down here on Earth. OK?

Who is that ‘higher being’ when it comes to Buddhism? That is my issue.

Please do not tell me that it must, of course, be the Buddha. But, it cannot be, by definition. The Buddha is no longer around. He is gone. He reached ‘Nirvana‘. The state of NOT being here, there or anywhere else. So the Buddha is not like God. The Buddha was adamant that he will cease to be. So you can’t pray to Buddha — at least in a meaningful way. He can’t intercede. He is not there. Bit like an imaginary friend.

Yes, Buddhists do pray — but to gods (small ‘g’) from other religions. My adoptive mother, who believed that she was a model Buddhist, was renowned for her prayers, which people, around the world, claimed worked. [I have one rebuttal. If her prayers were that good how do you explain ME?] But she prayed to everybody and anybody. Though claiming to be 100% Buddhist she prayed to the Christian God, Hindu gods and whoever she could rustle up. She had more Holy Water from different parts of the world, Lourdes her favorite, at her apartment in Paris that soda. It would always be ‘would you like some Holy Water? Got some special from Lourdes, last week’. But that was my adoptive mother (who birthday it was today). Not the Dalai Lama.

He is said to be a Buddhist leader. So who does he pray to — because that is the religion you should check out. SMILE.

Note that it says ‘prayers to Buddha‘.

Yes, a lot of people, not too brightly pray to Buddha. Sadly that has to be a very pointless task. The Buddha, by his own words, and by the fundamental tenets of Buddhism, NO LONGER EXISTS.

The Buddha reached Nirvana. It basically means that his soul ceased to exist. His soul was blown out like a candle.

The Buddha attaining Niravana is the Buddhist equivalent to the resurrection. It is the crux of the belief.

So, as I always ask, how can YOU pray to somebody who does NOT exist. Yes, that raises other questions about other religions BUT, those who pray do so BECAUSE they are 1,000%+ convinced that there is somebody UP THERE. The Buddha is NOT up there. Take my word on that. I know. I know my Buddhism.

I explained this all before in this July 3, 2014 post. Here is a snippet from that post.

In theory Buddhist should NOT pray! They have nobody to pray to. I kind of explained it here. Yes, Buddhist pray. The family that adopted me were BIG into prayer. But they prayed to the Hindu gods and sometimes even to the Christian God. So that is the flip of what Rowan is doing. Devout Buddhist praying to Christ because the Buddha is unavailable to answer prayer.”
