We went to ‘Appleview Orchard‘, to pick apples, as we have done every October, for the last 6-years. It is a fun place and extremely picturesque — in multiple dimensions. I always look forward to taking pictures in addition to communing with the apples.

In addition to apples, pumpkins and all things associated with apples, the owners, Dennis and Mary, always makes sure that there plenty of floral treats. This year was no exception. So, I am sharing the flowers of ‘Appleview Orchard‘ with you. Enjoy.

Apple Picking At “Appleview Orchard”, Pittsfield, New Hampshire — October 14, 2017.

We have been going to ‘Appleview Orchard‘, to pick apples, every fall, for the last 6-years, with relish — without fail. So, today was our 2017 outing, and as ever, it was fulfilling and rewarding — even if I abstained from eating a full apple fritter (let alone three). Over the years we have got to know the owners, Dennis and Mary, and it is always good to see them. It should also be mentioned that they have two links to this blog from their ‘Appleview Orchard’ Website.

We typically go slightly earlier in October BUT going mid-October was fine. Still a LOT of apples left on the trees and a tad less people. Beautiful day. Gorgeous to take pictures. I always look forward to that.

We had fun. Got a lot apples and two pumpkins. Teischan had her customary ice cream and apple fritters. So, it was a good afternoon out. I got a LOT of great pictures. {Smile}

These are NOT flowers. I know that. Honest.

I am fairly sure that these are not flowers either.

On Route 28, in Barnstead, next to ‘Bosco Bell’. We go by there every time we go to Concord and I admire their display. Today I made a point of stopping to take some pictures. But, it was around 5pm and the light wasn’t great. Yes, I could make them better IF I ‘PhotoShopped’ — BUT, I don’t. {Smile}

Keene’s loss was Laconia’s GAIN. And I am delighted. During the 10 years I lived in Gilford I had much dealings in Laconia and I like Laconia. Laconia has never been bad to me. So I am happy that Laconia has another attraction to add to the “Multicultural Day“.

Of course we went. We got there just before 5pm, found a free ‘handicap parking‘ (given that Deanna does have a permanent pass), and was ‘downtown’ by 5:10pm. That was the timing I was aiming for. Wanted to be there as it was getting dark.

Respectable number of people. Yes, it was busy. More people than for “Multicultural Day“, but less than what you would see at the Weirs for “Bikes”.

Well organized. Bravo Laconia. Lots of stalls and Deanna managed to spend a fair amount of time milling around.

It was COLD. Low 40s. Though we were dressed for it, it was still biting. And that was a detraction and distraction. The only time we had been to Keene for their festival, in 2013, it had been much warmer, even at 8pm at night.

There was only one thing missing. Pumpkins. Of course there were pumpkins BUT not that many. In 2013 in Keene, just one ‘block’, had more pumpkins than all of Laconia and there were a lot of blocks in Keene. So I doubt this even came close to a record.

C’est la vie. First year. Lets see how it goes. We were glad we went. I took 142 pictures with my Lumix FZ1000. Deanna and Devanee were also snapping away with their cameras. We went to dinner after that in Belmont. The ‘Hong Kong Buffet’. I was thinking. Two years ago in Keene we had one ‘point-and-shoot’ Panasonic between all of us. How things have changed. I even carried a Monopod with feet!

In “Live Free Or Die” New Hampshire the ONLY city (or place) with a law against female toplessness is Laconia — the dowager city of the Lakes Region. Well, ever since “Free The Female Nipple — NH” came to be we all knew that Laconia would be where the rubber would meet the asphalt. And to be fair the “Free the Nip” ‘organizers’ have talked about tackling Laconia. Now that the poorly ‘visualized’ Hampton Beach event has come and gone (thankfully) it is time to focus on Laconia. To be fair again there was a lady at Hampton, who I think was topless (though it was hard to tell), who claimed that ‘they’ planned to have ‘flash’ demonstrations in Laconia in the coming weeks — the ‘flash’ in this context, as in ‘flash mob’, meaning that it was be unannounced, unpublicized surprises. I can’t wait.

Laconia’s ordinance is onerous and has to be repealed. That has to be #1 goal of the NH movement (and I think they know it).

And then it came to be in a blinding flash. — Laconia Multicultural Day, now a.k.a. ‘festival’.  BINGO.

The perfect, made-in-heaven venue. Multicultural Day, and here I speak of one who has attended 12 of the 13 ‘days’, is all about diversity and inclusiveness (though 90% of Laconia appears to stay away from the park).

This is THE venue to make a stand — if they really have big enough ‘kahunas’. Let’s face it. In Laconia the good ladies face the real risk of being arrested and facing a fine — a risk that wasn’t that high in Hampton, unless they got busted for ‘disturbing the peace’. IF you are going to be arrested WHAT better venue than the Multicultural Festival? IF publicity and attention is what is required this is IT.

IF I had a say, I would go even further. I would contact the Festival organizers and ask for a SPOT on the PARADE! Think about it. That is how the LGBT movement got much of their EARLY publicity. They demanded their right to be in parades. Go see the Mayor. Ed ‘University of Whales‘ Engler probably will be sympathetic. Go ask him whether the NH movement can appear in the parade. Worse case make a COMPROMISE. Agree to appear in the parade clothed, but with appropriate signs and apparel protesting the infringement.

Well, you got the IDEA — and that is all it is. An idea. A suggestion. And then remember, Laconia PUMPKIN festival. I can JUST see it. Painted PUMPKINS!

I was at Keene in my official capacity as a Granite State Ambassador (GSA) doing the ‘meet and greet’, registering pumpkins and at the end helping the crowds light the jack-o’-lanterns. Yes, of course, we knew HGTV was there. They were hard to miss. They came by out tend, given it was one of the official registration tents a number of times. I didn’t know they had taped me. We finally got around to watch the show (off the DVR) this evening. We were all joking as to who might appear since we all had a good chance, since we were all quite involved, especially at the end when the lanterns needed to be lit. The Deanna and the kids were here, there and everywhere lightning at 50. I am at about -11.00 (from the end).

Watching the program convinced all of us that to do this properly you need RFID and LED candles as I had prescribed.

That is ME. No escaping that. About -11 minutes from the end. That is the only shot that any of us are in. Click to access FULL HGTV ‘Pumpkin Wars’ episode on their Website as a 49 minute video.

So here is the final scoop so to speak. Keene, NH, on October 25, 2003 [i.e., 9 years ago], set the then official Guinness World Record with 28,952, for the 9th time in a row, the first record established by them in 1991 with just 600. See chart below.

But, 3 years later, the record was officially broken, with a certificate from Guinness to prove it, when 100,000+ people came together on Boston Common to light 30,128 jack-o’-lanterns — the event organized by the national ‘Camp Sunshine‘, a non-profit for Children.

Pumpkins in Boston in 2003, the skyline obviously very different from that of Keene. Picture from ‘outtamymindwithworry.blogspot.com’ — with THANKS.

Since establishing the then record in 2003, with its 28,952, Keene has managed to break the 29,000 mark twice, this year (2012) with 29,381 and 29,762 in 2009.

Wikipedia actually has a ‘Keene Pumpkin Festival’ page with lots of pertinent information. If you are still lusting for more information please visit them.
