Do NOT Buy Garmin Vivoactive 3 Right Now — Too Many Quality Issues. Wait!

by Anura Guruge

I am not saying this lightly or out of any malice. It grieves me to say so (and right now I am a Garmin shareholder (though that is likely to change)).

I returned the 2nd — yes SECOND — Garmin Vivoactive 3 on Monday. I have had two that have failed since November 16. That is crazy.

There is a definite issue with quality.

When Garmin tells me that users like I should get the Fenix 5 rather than a VA 3 you know that they know something that they really do not want to let on.

I was the 10th person to report the barometric altimeter fail.

The second VA3 I got was noticeably better than the 1st — which, given that I preordered it (in Gunmetal)) — which had to have been from a very early batch.

Lovely watch. One of the nicest and MOST feature rich. That I have to now make do with a butt ugly Fitbit Ionic breaks my heart.

Yes, I could have got a 3rd VA 3. I was offered one. I said NO THANK YOU. I can’t take it.

New, Rather Expensive ($1,699) Pseudo Rangefinder Fujifilm X-Pro2 Leaves Me Cold.

assessment of the Fuji X-Pro2.

Given that I (think) I have convinced myself that my next camera will be a Fuji X-T1 or ITS SUCCESSOR, I spent a lot of time and effort learning about the newly announced Fuji X-Pro2 given that I, like many, believe that the ‘X-T2’ would have similar specs. I have been baffled by the unstinted enthusiasm I have seen for the X-Pro2. I just can’t get it — as I have already said earlier.

It is NOT a rangefinder. It just looks like a rangefinder and as such has all of the FLAWS of a rangefinder WITHOUT the one big advantage of that genre, spot-on ‘image superimposition‘ focusing. Instead the X-Pro2, like the X-Pro1, has this hybrid OVF/EVF — albeit with refinements in the ‘2’. Do NOT get it. Yes, I am the first to admit it. I, since the Apple Mac pioneered this revolutionary concept 3 decades ago, have been a confirmed WYSIWYG guy. I like, at all times, to see exactly what I am getting or hoping to get. Since September 2015 when I switched, irrevocably, to ‘mirrorless‘ I have been in awe of the delights of using EVFs. I like to change WB etc. and see exactly what I can expect. Seeing the lens in my OVF would drive me bats. Plus I want to see the entire image I am shooting, full-frame, in my viewfinder — not within some white lines.

And then another thing I never understood, and could not properly rationalize, BUT has been mentioned in a number of X-Pro1 vs. X-T1 reviews that I have studied. The X-T1, invariably, delivers slightly better image quality than the X-Pro1. Don’t know why and none of the reviewers explained. Of course the X-Pro2, with better specs, should beat the X-T1 for now. But what I wonder is will an ‘X-T2’ with X-Pro2 like specs end up with better picture quality.

I just can’t see myself with an X-Pro2. To I it would be a regressive step. I tried very hard to convince myself that I could like the X-Pro2, BUT I can’t. IF there is to be no X-T2 I would rather get a X-T1, and save myself some serious dough, than get a X-Pro2. So that is where I stand for now. But many of my past claims about what camera I would get next have proved to be invalid. So time will tell. For now I am waiting for a X-T2.

This APP really should be a built-in standard feature within the Roku System menu. It is not.

Roku, in its ‘Network’ menu, does NOT provide a speed test/bandwidth test — and one really is handy if you are having loading or image quality issues (as can often be the case with say Sling). I had been using an external speed test whilst promising myself that I will check to see if I can get a Roku ‘App’ [actually a channel].

It is easy enough to find IF you Google it.

It is a PRIVATE channel. So it has to be installed from a PC. You need to be able to logon to your Roku account — i.e., you need to know your password.

Other than that it is easy enough. On the Roku, on the System menu, click ‘Check UPDATES’ to force the Roku to download and install the App.

You will love it.

Well, what I said had to be said. The bundle, indubitably, is good value for money. I would NOT have got it, after all the months of research, if it was not. But you just need to be aware.

So far, so good with the camera. Here are 4 more images from the camera — DRAMATICALLY resized in terms of image size. The originals of these, in V.Fine quality, generate JPEG files as big as 18MG! What I am posting are 317KB! So a huge difference in size and hence quality!

Picture Quality Of CNBC On Dish Is Beyond Atrocious — Worse Than SD.

cnbcdish12121As I posted here, 3 weeks ago, I noticed that the Dish HD picture quality, on our two HD TVs, was far, far, far inferior to that of DirecTV.

Kind of came as a shock since we had switched from DirecTV to Dish — and the two TVs were the same.

I remember, from 2 years ago, that we all noticed that the DirecTV picture quality was ‘infinitely’ better than that of Dish, when we switched from Dish to DirecTV. [Yes, the 2 year contract game.]

I also know that this inferior picture quality has to do with Dish transmitting LESS bandwidth (and as such ‘lines’) for certain channels OUTSIDE of Prime Time. Yes, CNN on Dish at 10pm can look dazzling. The difference is that CNN and all other channels with DirecTV looked that good ALL of the time.

Though I turn on CNBC on TV, as soon as I wake up (around 8:20 am), I don’t really watch it. I listen to it while I read the news on the U.K. “Daily Mail” on my Pad.

This morning I had a real close look at CNBC per Dish.

OMG. OMG.

Its was dreadful. Grainy, out of focus and at a resolution far below SD — never mind HD. Now if I was getting this on an Internet connection you could blame connection speed. But I am getting this BROADCAST down from a satellite. So I can’t control the bandwidth.

This is bad. Very bad. Dish should be ashamed.

directvdish1212We have had Dish HD TV (again) since last Thursday, June 4, 2015. I had finally managed to cancel my accursed and detested DirecTV account on May 31 — 3 weeks ahead of schedule. Just a few minutes ago Deanna took the pre-paid box with the two Genie receivers to the Post Office. No doubt DirecTV will find something wrong with them and charge me for it. What is new. That is all that DirecTV did for 2 years — lied and cheated at each and every turn.

Well, I am back with Dish. Yes, they are no angels either, BUT I don’t think they are as bad as DirecTV. Maybe I will learn.

But we noticed something right away.

Dish Network picture quality is POOR — one could even say downright bad!

Compared to DirecTV HD it is about 50% as good. I guess they just don’t transmit as much bandwidth.

This may come as a surprise but quality of a HD picture is DEPENDENT on how much resolution is transmitted!

Yes, every once in a while I have seen Dish do decent HD — typically at night during prime time. During the day their HD really sucks.

I remember this NOW from when we switched to DirecTV two years ago. Despite all the other problems with DirecTV we all could BUT not notice that the picture quality was stunningly vivid.

Well we are back to ‘so so’ HD with Dish.

No it is NOT our TVs. We still get BRILLIANT HD with the Roku 3 when watching Amazon Prime. Teischan right now is watching “Mansfield Park” on Amazon and the picture quality is worth writing home about. [Plus we now have DEDICATED 15Mbps, wired, TDS Internet to the Roku! More on that later.]

But ONE good thing on the Dish Hopper. So far I have NOT encountered ANY sound loss. That is good.

But I have to say. WOW. Picture quality of Dish is atrocious. Good job we don’t watch much Dish. 85% of our TV viewing is now on the Roku. I got Dish primarily so that I can have 24×7 CNN and CNBC.

Catch Up‘ for TEN Cricket, essentially a server-side DVR capability that will go back 30-days became available on Skybox TV last Sunday.

I have, as was the case when I had cricket with DISH, been watching cricket every night from 10:00 to 10:45 pm — before coming up to do another 2 hours of work. All this week I used ‘Catch Up’ to watch the 2013 West Indies v. Pakistan ODI series. Great series. 3rd ODI was a nail-biter. Good cricket. Amazing bowling. Some memorable batting performances. The new tall West Indian bowler, Jason Holder, who can also hit, appears to be a GREAT FIND. Joy to watch him bowl. Reminds me of the greats from the 1970s and 1980s. And then Pakistan has the 7′ Irfan.

I wasn’t sure about ‘Catch Up’ since I had never used it. I like it. Saves me having to record the matches. They are there … on the menu … and you just select them. The 30-day window could be a problem. Maybe I could get them to extend it, at least for ‘TEN’, to maybe 90 days. That would work.

Quality has been GOOD. Actually GREAT. No delays, no jitter, no breakup of the video. Actually it is better than what I was getting on DISH. Yes, one program was only 1/2 recorded, 57 minutes out of 2 hours. But, I think that was an initial glitch. Yes, I have told them about it and they promised to look into it.

So, I am a very happy camper.

Had another call today from somebody who wants a box. Here is THE LINK.

As I had anticipated, based on what I had been told by the Skybox TV developer, ‘Catch Up TV’ was available as of Saturday, August 17, 2013, for TEN Cricket.

I actually used it. 10 to 10:45 pm is my de rigueur time slot for my daily dose of cricket. So I tuned into the Skybox TV. Saw that TEN was now appearing in ‘Catch Up TV’. Of course selected that. Saw a West Indies vs. England ODI — labeled as a Classic from 4 pm that day. Selected that. It was a match from 1997. It was good to watch the likes of Lara, Hicks, Walsh etc. Picture quality was very good. Kind of funny but I would even say that the TV coverage was also better with Picture-in-Picture (PIP) insert to show what was happening at the wicket while the ball was heading towards the rope. I miss that in the modern coverage. Good game.

Catch Up feature seems to work well. I am delighted. This is getting better by the day.

No question whatsoever. Skybox TV is a REAL VIABLE option for getting TEN Cricket in the U.S.

I noticed that the TEN Cricket schedule, for the day, was on display when I switched over to the Skybox TV on Thursday night for my nightly dose of cricket.

That was good news. Having the schedule was a prerequisite for the 30-day, DVR-like ‘Catch Up TV‘ feature. So as promised we might have this feature soon, maybe even by this weekend. Wow. I am excited. Then I can go and pick and chose what I want to watch in terms of matches.

catchupten

I chatted with one of the Skybox TV developers (in Canada) this afternoon. We had been ‘chatting’ briefly on the phone and on e-mail over the last 10 days, but this was the first time we had a long, productive two-way dialogue about my impressions of ‘TEN Cricket’ with the Skybox TV and what was coming down the pike.

I had been told from day one that a DVR-like Catch Up feature would be available for TEN Cricket.

There is one Indian-program Catch Up TV channel on the Skybox right now. I actually played with it tonight. It is cute.

TEN Cricket is the next channel to be added — SHORTLY.

They are just waiting on getting the electronic schedule since this is key — as with a DVR. When activated you will be able to go back a month and pick programs, in the case of cricket fan, specific matches, we want to watch. This will be great. Can’t wait.

I will get updates in the coming days and I will keep you posted. This will really be a breakthrough. We might even get to see Tri-Nations.

Stay tuned.
