What The Heck Is Wrong With The South African Cricket Team — Is It Voodoo?

by Anura Guruge

From: cricinfo.com.

Given the amount of cricket I watch, I have seen a lot of teams — and the recent West Indies team readily comes to mind — play horribly. But, the South African performance against Australia in the 1st T20 was beyond comprehension. It was an absolute, bloody abortion. Jesus wept. I nearly did too.

Yes, there is definite Munda Logic — i.e., African thought process, or, in this instance, to be precise, lack of thought process all together. I think the world of Quinton de Kock. But, as captain he is demonstrating what used to be joked about him. He is NO intellectual. He seems utterly lost as captain.

The dropped bloody catches. I have never seen anything like that?

I don’t believe in that mumbo jumbo, but many of them do and is it possible that they think that they are under a Voodoo spell. Sire played like they were under a dark cloud.

Yes, then there is the possibility of CORRUPTION and match-fixing!

What is going on right now is NOT right. Something is very, very WRONG.

I am very upset. I like this team, BUT not when they play like this — like a bunch of teenage girls all having their monthlies at the same time.

2019 Cricket World Cup: Appears South Africa Is Going To Torture Me — Has Amla Become A Liability?

by Anura Guruge

South Africa got a wicket with the 2nd ball of the game, and then they go onto LOSE by 104-runs. Didn’t even make it to the 40-over mark.

Wasn’t their finest ‘hour’.

I hate to say this, BUT I just don’t get them.

Ngidi & Rabada bowl like GIRLS. They are not good enough to bowl throat balls. They disappointed I.

de Kock was GREAT but got out, as he often does, unnecessarily. Shame. If he hung around they might have had a chance.

DEAR, poor Amla worries me. I THINK THE WORLD OF HIM. But, he is struggling and I hate to see that. I think he has got too old to handle genuine Jofra Archer ilk speed, i.e., 90 mph. I think he is having eyesight issues again. Yes, he did well the warm-up game, but they should DROP HIM.

But, still a long way to go. But, it was NOT a good start.

England was bloody impressive. Clinical.

Cricket World Cup 2019: Who Do I Think/Hope Will Win It.

As with so many decisions in my life, I have two choices — one based on what I think (i.e., what my heads says) and the other being what I want (i.e., going with the heart).

Despite their poor performance in the warm-up game against Australia (on Saturday), I, like most of the professional pundits, think that England can pull this off. Nothing wrong with that. As a proud Brit I will, of course, rejoice. But, I don’t have an empathy with any of the current English players. They just seems so robotic.

On the other hand, I genuinely like quite a few of the South Africans. I have really got to admire and enjoy the South Africans over the last few years. They have usurped the West Indies, a team I ardently supported for over 40-years, as the team I look forward to watching and rooting for.

What I like most is their genuine, fondness for each other — irrespective of color or religion (given that they have white & black, Christians and Muslims). That team exemplifies what Nelson Mandela wanted for all of South Africa. I think part of my fondness for them is my devotion to Nelson Mandela. Supporting this South African team is like paying homage to Nelson. That appeals to me. Plus, some really exciting cricketers: Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada … They all remind me of the West Indians that I should to adore.

Well, the 2019 World Cup hasn’t even started yet. So, a long way to go. But, it should be fun — especially with U.S. coverage available with Willow TV.

South African Quinton de Kock’s 168* Against Bangladesh In The 1st ODI Was Brilliant. Scintillating.

by Anura Guruge

I have been publicly raving about young Quinton de Kock for over 2-years now. From the first time I saw him, in an ODI, I recognized at once, that he was a rare talent — and it did not require any genius on my part to do so. This ‘boy’ exudes class, confidence and competence. He can bat and his wicket-keeping is pretty special too. South Africa is very lucky to have him.

His innings, with my other perennial South African favorite, Hashim Amla, was amazing. They both paced themselves so well. Quinton, one way or another, got most of the strike, 145 balls to Hashim’s 112. I don’t think Hashim minds. Now that he is getting older I get the feeling he is quite content to accumulate runs, slowly, and keep his end up.

Before we even got to the halfway mark of the South African innings I kind of felt that this was going to be a 10-wicket victory — as it was. But, they did drop Quinton, on the boundary, right at the end when they only needed like 6 more runs. That would have been sad. But, luck prevailed.

Where Does South Africa Find Batting Talent Such As Aiden Markram?

This might be sacrilegious to say so,
BUT he reminds me of Barry Richards!

Barry Richards, in his glory.

I saw him for the first time today, opening for South Africa in the Test match against Bangladesh. Wow. He oozes class! Not even 23-years old.

A few years ago it was Quinton de Kock. He is now one of my FAVORITE cricketers. Now  Aiden Markram.

South Africa is blessed. Hashim AmlaAB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy … and that is without mentioning the likes of David Miller. These guys can bat — bat seriously. What a batting unit.

As with Quinton de Kock, mark my word. Aiden Markram is going places.

P.S., I knew Barry Richards. Saw a LOT of him, playing for Hampshire between 1975 – 1979. I was a Hants. Cricket Club member during that time, and lucky enough to have Barry and Gordon Greenidge open for Hampshire.

Hats Off To England & New Zealand For Their ‘Out Of Their Skins’ Performances At #ICCWT20.

by Anura Guruge

hatsoffsaeng16111

Wow. Wow. Wow.

I watched the highlights of both  ICC World Twenty20, #ICCWT20, games — Australia v. New Zealand & England v. South Africa — back to back, from India, last night.

I was amazed. Exceptional cricket. I was also wrong as to the outcome in each instance.

I was sure that New Zealand were at least 40 short of what they needed. But, I was wrong. As they did with India they pulled off a brilliant win. Impressive, cohesive team. They most likely will get to the final. Possibly even walk away as the Champs. Well done.

As for England, I am humbled. In awe. I was sure that they wouldn’t get within 60 runs of the target. Boy was I wrong. What a run chase. Who knew that current teams could chase such large totals.

Yet AGAIN South African CAPTAINCY was poor! Just do not understand what they are thinking. This time it was Faf du Plessis. He should have brought in Imran Tahir during the Power Play to TRY and stem the tide. He didn’t. He persevered with pace. You had to take pace off the ball. I think that is what cost them the match. Poor captaincy. Don’t get it. Very clever and talented bunch. Feel real bad for my favorites Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock (who I have raved about for 12 months). Great innings for nought. AB de Villiers, per his standards, played a poor innings. C’est la vie. That match alone could have cost them the Championship!

South Africa In Shocking Pink, In the 4th ODI Against England, Deliver The Thrills …

by Anura Guruge

sainpinkSouth Africa, these days, is the team that I most enjoy watching — particularly so when they are in their shocking pink (to support the fight against breast cancer). They look good. I actually think that every series, around the World, should have a Pink Match — for the same cause.

I knew that the highlights of the Pink 4th ODI would be on tonight. I was looking forward to it all day. Though I also had the option of watching the 2nd T20I between India vs. Sri Lanka, it was a no-brainer. It was a thrilling match. Some great cricket. I really wasn’t sure that SA was going to win. It was close. Morris played a brilliant innings. I was crushed when Amla was out without scoring. I love watching him bat — and of Quinton de Kock. I rated him from the time I saw him against the West Indies.

So two dramatic games in two nights. I am blessed. 5th ODI on Sunday. Enjoy.

amlafgdsgdMark my word, something is wrong with Hashim Amla — the captain of the woefully struggling South African’s in India.

I think he has among OTHER things an eyesight problem! In the First Day of the 4th Test against India, in Delhi, he dropped 3 slip catches. Amla dropping catches! I bet prior to that he probably hadn’t dropped three catches in a calendar year. Not right.

He is also getting out CHEAPLY. This used to be, just recently, the World’s #1 Batsman! Something is not right.

In the 3rd Test Match I noticed a MARKED bruise under his right eye. Did he get hit by a ball. That could have done some damage.

I like Amla. What is there not to like. Great cricketer and seems like an all-round nice guy.

BUT HE IS NOT A GOOD CAPTAIN.

His handling of Imran Tahir in the 3rd Test Match showed that — graphically. Not his fault. Being a cricket captain is not something you can be taught. You either have it in you or you don’t. Amla doesn’t. That is fine. Let him go back to being the World’s best opening bat.

He has made a LOT of bad decisions. Another is the omission of Quinton de Kock. Jesus wept. Quinton is class. The new openers. Quinton is better than all of them put together. Plus he is a better wicketkeeper than the one that is struggling like crazy.

And they have AB de Villiers, the ex-captain, in the team. This rotation of captains is silly. Yes, it is a very taxing job BUT if you are good at it, like AB was (and he is good at everything he does) let him have it for life.

So just a heads up. Mark my word. Remember this post.

No, with Hashim Amla, I don’t think there is any match fixing. WOW.

AB_de_Villiers_glove_(cropped)Talk about an abundance of riches. The South African batting line is ‘crazy’ in not a GREAT way. Quinton de Kock, Amla, du Plessis, AB, Duminy (who has blossomed in the last 12 months), Behardien and Miller! What a nice problem to have.

Abraham Benjamin “AB” de Villiers at #4 is a waste — and he knows that. Yes, of course, I know that he is wicket-keeping as well, BUT I think he is plenty fit. He should open with de Kock — who I think is THE most EXCITING young cricketer on the scene at the moment! I have seen a lot of him and there is a lot to like. Very pleasing on the eye.

AB coming in at #4 does NOT give him enough overs. That is the issue. AB #3 and du Plessis #4.
