U.S. Police Really Should Be Better Trained To Handle Diplomatic Immunity Claims — In Light Beverly Hills Qatari Clown.

OK. I understand and appreciate that the police could NOT arrest him because they did not see him race either one of the cars. Got that.

But, it says that he, this clown, told them that he had Diplomatic Immunity. And here is MY POINT.

They, i.e., the police, should have been able to verify that, within minutes, with the State Office. There has to be a SYSTEM. We need such a verification system.

I speak of one who did have bona fide Diplomatic Immunity for 3 years (maybe 6) — and even after that, with appropriate authorization, drove ‘CD — plated’, i.e., ‘Corp Diplomatic’, cars in D.C. and Paris (since my adoptive parents were real Diplomats).

I even remember the first time I heard the phrase — ‘diplomatic immunity’. It was in the early 1960s in Ceylon. The Burmese Ambassador to Ceylon chased his wife, down the road, in central Colombo, and shot her dead, in public. Then he, quite rightly (as was his due), claimed diplomatic immunity and just walked back to his residence. He left Colombo a few days later. The police could not touch him. My parents, who even then were staples of the diplomatic scene, knew the Ambassador and his gunned down wife. There was much consternation in our household.

Many decades later, in August 1992, the phrase again cropped up this time in ‘our’ household. My adoptive mother, 62, with various illnesses (though none truly life threatening), died, unexpectedly, in her sleep, in Paris. The French authorities wanted an autopsy performed. My adoptive father said there was no need for one — and reminded them that ‘they’ had immunity, i.e., French laws did not apply to them. I did NOT have a say, and all this happened even before I knew of the death — because I was in the U.S. (and had my phone ‘off-the-hook’ because I had just got back from a gruelling trip to Israel and did not want my Israeli colleagues calling me, as they were wont to do, at 6 am). I really would have liked to see the results of an autopsy.

So, I speak with someone who knows a bit about D.I. — Diplomatic Immunity.

I have a feeling he did NOT have Diplomatic Immunity. Just because you are a royal does not give you immunity. Immunity goes with an official ‘post’ — e.g., an Ambassador. Yes, then his family get it — but I am sure it only applies to children who are minors. Immunity is granted, in each country, by the State Department of THAT country and they sure have a list.

IF this idiot did NOT have immunity he should have been arrested for making a FALSE claim to the police. That is my point.

Police in Paris, from my experience, were very savvy about D.I.

Police in D.C., from my experience, were not as conversant BUT knew some of the basics.

Police in Alton, New Hampshire, where I now live probably would never have heard of it. And that is WHY all police should be given at least 15 minutes of training SO that they know enough to call somebody …

Get it?

MGB pictures will have to be attributed to ‘yours truly’.

Yes, we know where they were coming from — ‘Castle in the Clouds‘ following the ‘British Cars of New Hampshire‘ (BCNH) and JANE (Jaguar Association of New England) ‘show-and-tell’ event.

Yes, we should have gone. We are BCNH members. But it is a question of time and priorities.

The Membership Person at BCNH drew my attention to this before I even realized. Once I had told him about my ‘crazy’ life — vastly complicated by my incurable addiction to writing — he asked me, via e-mail, point-blank: “aren’t you going to be TOO BUSY to attend our events?“. He was RIGHT! I should have saved my membership dues. But that is OK. Right now, as with ‘Comet ISON‘ and Pope John XXIII’s canonization I am working on a book — Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S. in September — that has a HARD deadline. So complicates matters further.

Devanee, understandably, was bummed. But, the kids understand. I feel bad for them. But they do get to go many places.

Before anybody gets on their high horse and even starts to think about ‘animal anything’ let me please assure YOU that tamed elephants in Sri Lanka are treated much the same way as pet dogs are treated in the U.S. or Britain. They are pampered and cherished. They are also a very expensive investment and commitments. So there is no hanky panky when it come to elephants. They do not get mistreated. If they are running that is NO DIFFERENT to having a dog run. These elephants will do, just like a dog, just about anything to make their ‘leader’ happy. So this would have been great fun.

There is an article about working elephants in Burma, in the 1920s, in the April 2015 issue of the “Reader’s Digest” that I have been meaning to talk about. Though it is written in praise of elephants the incident talked about bothers me — though it was done voluntarily by the elephants. They used their rumps to divert HUGE logs to teak timber floating down a fast flowing river. I don’t know about YOU, but an elephant using his rump to divert huge, 40 foot, logs bothers me. It has to have hurt.

It is the featured, cover item in the latest issue of the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog. I never did understand why we are on their distribution list since we are way outside their demographics. This is a catalog for the rich. Not last Christmas, but the Christmas before, I kind of felt guilty that I keep on getting the catalog so I ordered one of their cheaper offerings — a supposedly foldable, portable, crank-powered slot-car racing kit. The kids like slot cars, but they tend to destroy the track. The promise of this kit was that the track neatly folded back into a case so that it would not be lying around to be stepped on. Here, I found a picture.

It was fun, especially being able to adjust the speed of the cars by how fast you cranked — but the track sure did not fold back, neatly, into the case as promised. I would have get it. But, Deanna was having none of it. As far as she was concerned it did not do what it was supposed to do. In general she, being American, takes care of returns. I have never really mastered the whole notion and always feel bad if I have to return something. I think that is my British upbringing. I gather Hammacher Schlemmer was outstanding and gave us a full refund — including the shipping. I am impressed.

Now this $28,000 gizmo is a counterbalanced turntable for vinyl records — the World’s only counterbalanced turntable. Wow. The counter-rotating platters, like duo-props on a boat, eliminate sonic aberrations. I am not sure I buy all of that. Long, long time ago, before I had any kids and had at least three rather healthy sources of income, I used to dabble in high-end British hi-fi equipment, such as Naim.

More or less what I had bought c. 1982.

Naim amplifiers, then and now, only have ONE knob — that for volume. You don’t adjust anything else because you would only be messing around with near-perfection. I used to use a Linn Sondek LP12 as my turntable, which also featured a suspended turntable.

The Lin, 30 years ago, cost a few thousand. I see that they are now selling for about $12,000. So that is still less than 1/2 the price. I bet you could not tell the sound difference between a Lin and the $28K turntable — none of our hearing, despite what we think, is that good. One of these days I really should round this post off by talking of the exquisite Linn Isobarik Speakers.

Lake Winnipesaukee, NH — What We Need, Zapta Racing. WOW (and Remember I Own ‘WOW NH’)

We need to bring back the BIG, mass appeal crowd pleaser attractions to Lake Winnipesaukee, which of late has turned into, much of the time, sleepy, backwater. I have heard that there used to be big water skiing extravaganzas like you would see in those old Hollywood movies. I have also read stories of the old wooden cigarette boat races. I remember, vividly, two ‘Off Shore Racing Boat’ races in the Broads, c. 1999 — maybe 1999 and 2000. Those were cool. That was exciting. We went by boat. They were helicopters filming the race. It was Florida in NH. Plus you could go to Weirs and look at those huge, long boats with giant engines. Now, nothing. Lets have Zapta Racing. That would reinvigorate the Lake and surrounds.
