The Beginning Of The END Of South African Apartheid Happened This Day, Just 25-Years Ago — March 17, 1992.

WOW! Just 25 years ago.

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then.

25 years.

Nelson Mandela had been released from prison 2 years earlier, 11 February 1990. I remember it well. Watched it LIVE, on TV, and CRIED!

9:30am (Eastern) Was THE Time To ‘Buy’ Post Brexit ‘Leave’ Vote. SMILE.

by Anura Guruge

crmpostbrexit

Chart for “Salesforce.com” (CRM), on June 24, 2016 — day after Brexit. From “marketwatch.com” of course — who else? Click to ENLARGE and marvel.

I stayed up till 1:30am (Eastern) watching the Referendum results, LIVE, on BBC 1 on my Roku, “UK TV” channel. [To my disappointment BBC election coverage came across as primitive compared to what we have got used to in the U.S.!]

I was surprised by the result and I really do have genuine, mixed feelings. I am not wildly euphoric that we voted, in a non-binding referendum, to LEAVE — though, deep, deep down, my sentiments are with LEAVE, which is how I voted, 41 years ago in the 1st Referendum.

I don’t believe that this is a done deal and a lot of water will flow under the collectives bridges of the EU before we see anything definitive 2.5 years, minimum, from now.

That the markets reacted the way they did was hilarious to I. It is crazy. Why sell stock today? What has changed?

But I was glad. I had been waiting, biding my time, for a pullback of this magnitude. SMILE. That is what clever investing is all about.

Was on Fidelity at 9:30am. I had NOT factored in that Fidelity would be slow! I should have remembered from past days like this. But it wasn’t too bad.

I wanted to buy more “salesforce.com” (CRM) and “Facebook” (FB) shares — some for the kids. Got it done. I was all done by 9:35am.

Why would AMZN go down $20 in the day? How will Brexit impact AMZN? I don’t think it will. Strangely AMZN options, my bread-and-butter, were not cooperating. Shame. But that is OK. I am not greedy, never was.

More on my feelings on Brexit in another post.

But for now, SMILE. SMILE. SMILE.

P.S., If Scotland AGAIN tries to break away I will be beyond bummed.

With Polling Stations Open For Another 5 Hours, German Cinema Shooting Could Sway Brexit Voting!

Crossed my mind as I was watching the breaking news. We don’t know the details BUT if it was in any way ‘immigration-related’ it could have an impact on the Brexit referendum.

Food for thought.

Polls don’t close till 10pm London (GMT) time (today).

I Am Strangely Calm & Ambivalent About Brexit Referendum — Cool With EITHER Outcome!

by Anura Guruge

I should not be ambivalent and incredibly calm about the outcome of the Brexit referendum.

I should be agitated and anxious as I was ahead of the Scottish Referendum two years ago.

I had, for decades, been extremely ANTI-European Union (EU). I voted in 1975 AGAINST staying in the EU.

To start with I was, of course, in the LEAVE camp.

Then I started having second thoughts. Though I will, alas, never get the chance it is kind of nice to know that I could go and live anywhere in the EU that I wished, say Italy or Holland. Would hate to lose that. Also the unhindered travel.

So in this case, much to MY surprise, I can see ‘positives’ in either outcome. Amazing.

So I am very calm. Emotionally unattached, so to speak.

The results will be interesting and I will stay up to watch them — if need be.

Would U.S. Voters, Like The Swiss, REJECT Guaranteed Income For All?

by Anura Guruge

swissguaranteedincome

Click image to access “New York Times” original.

Kind of like Social Security retirement FOR LIFE irrespective of age. The Swiss were talking $2,560, to each adult and $640 for children under 18 PER MONTH! That is more than what most people get in Social Security.

Of course the question becomes how will you FINANCE such a guaranteed income plan?

Of course TAXES will have to be raised and other entitlement program, possibly Social Security, would have to be trimmed back.

The Swiss, a savvy bunch, rejected it because they understood the consequences.

That might not be the case in the U.S. IF it ever, by some miracle, makes it to a vote for referendum. But to be fair there will be a large percentage, possibly 50%, who would vote it down because of the tax implication and Federal Government involvement. Food for thought though.

It is the definitive insider’s guide to Pope Francis’ visit to Washington D.C, New York City and Philadelphia in September 2015. Check it out. Amazon has the descriptive blurbs so I won’t regurgitate them here.

Did a lot of research for this book and that, as with some of my other pope books (e.g., Popes and the Tale of their Names), is what sets it apart. Lots of information that is not common knowledge. I enjoy the research! This book, like so many of my others, was basically an excuse for me to do the research. I don’t see a point of doing research if you don’t share it with folks.

This, in the end, proved to be a long book. 170 pages, 7″ x 10″, in paperback form and 213 pages as an eBook.

Given that the pope will arrive in D.C., from Cuba, on September 22, 2015, I had a very HARD, immovable deadline. I wanted to get the book out a month prior to his arrival. So in the end, given that I didn’t finish my previous book till mid-May, I only had 3 months to write this book — though I had started doing some of the research earlier in the year. My goal was to have it published a month ahead of the pope’s arrival. I missed that by a day, but I am not too upset by that. This book was a lot of work and for the last 6 weeks I was working heads down whenever I could — BUT at the same time trying to make sure that I spent time with the kids and took them places they wanted to go (like ‘Polar Caves‘ & ‘York Wild Kingdom‘ last week). The kids, actually, are kind of funny about my books. They are so used to me writing and having books published that they think it is the most normal thing in the world. So yesterday, when I told Teischan (9) that I had finished my latest book, her words were: “Oh, good! That book took you forever to write. You have been working on it for 3 months!” Wow. The expectations I have created. Three months is plenty of time to get a book done. Yikes.

I am taking at least a 2 week break after this book. For a start I need to spend time with the new camera I plan to get — hopefully ordering it this week. I do have a list of about 5 book titles in my head. Tempted to write a book about Buddhism next! So the sequence would be … popes, popes, orgasms, popes, Buddhism. That is me. Versatile. There is, however, a dynamite ‘pope’ book that I want to write. So it is going to be a tussle. PLUS, a new resolution. Going forward I am NOT going to work on a book everyday! I am going to take 2 (maybe 3) days OFF a week. Yes, I will still write — as in blogging etc. — BUT it will not be on book. That way I can get some other stuff done. So that is the plan.

The Glorious British peerless pageantry at its very best. Makes me so proud to be British.

The Queen’s actual birthday was on April 21. She turned 89!

Trooping the Color is to mark her official, public Birthday. A Royal thing.

Trooping the Colour is a ceremony performed by regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies. It is a Battlefield tradition having to do with displaying once FLAGS that goes back to the 17 century.

The overriding impetus for Pope Francis’ September 22 — 27, 2015 visit to the U.S. is to participate in the 8th, triennial, “World Meetings of Families” being held in Philadelphia.

Archbishop ad personam, Bishop emeritus of Terni–Narni–Amelia (Italy), Vincenzo Paglia (70), as of June 2012 has been the President of the Pontifical Council for the Family. It is this Pontifical Council that is responsible, at the Vatican end, of organizing the World Meetings of Families — which by definition (as stated in its name) is a Global initiative. So for Paglia to be accused of and be officially investigated by Italian prosecutors for fraud and embezzlement is NOT good. Not sure whether he did it for his then diocese, the Church, personal gain or a combination of all.

It should not impact the event or the Pope’s visit. Just more embarrassment for the pope and Vatican. He definitely would have been in the pope’s retinue for the visit — possibly coming well ahead of the pope to make sure that all the details have been taken care of.

Interesting.

The issue closest and most dear to my heart is that of the
EU Referendum.

As I have mentioned, more than once, I voted AGAINST EU membership
in the FIRST referendum on this matter in 1975.

I have NEVER been a believer of EU membership.

We, THE BRITISH, don’t need the Europeans —
as much as they need us …

PLUS, and this is VERY important …

We, THE BRITISH, have
Glorious British Commonwealth

MY Glorious Commonwealth.

This 62% landslide in Catholic-Ireland is an embarrassment and blow to the Pope and the Church.

You have to ask: “What was God thinking?”

Yes, yes, I know all that stuff about Free Will and that God does not micromanage. But when you are talking about an entire Catholic nation it is hardly micromanagement. It is a MACRO event that affects the whole Church. The way I read this — God was in favor.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin’s statement, shown above, makes it very clear that Pope Francis, despite his infamous ‘who am I to judge‘ statement, is vehemently against gay marriage. Francis, contrary to what he pronounces, is a very-correct conservative, orthodox Jesuit at heart. He may claim not to judge but he is 100% behind the teachings of the Church that homosexuality is a sin! That is the dilemma of — and with — this pope. What he says in public is NOT what he actually believes in. It is a strange kind of papal lip service.

This Irish referendum will be a challenge. He will have to comment on it — this coming week. Lets wait to see what he has to say. God’s Will etc.
