Sony E-Mount, PZ 18-105mm — Updating Firmware To Ver. 04.

This, the Version 04 Firmware update, was released on July 27, 2017 — 4 days ago. I read about it on DPReview which I religiously scan, at least once a day, for just such information.

I had never updated firmware on a Sony lens. So I had some trepidations. To be fair to Sony they use the same update mechanism as that for their cameras. So that at least was comforting.

The update proved to be straightforward, painless and quick. Worked just as it was supposed to. Was done in minutes.

However, I have NOT noticed any difference in the lens’ autofocus (AF) prowess. If anything it was worse than it used to be! And I am not kidding. So …

Just letting you know. I would NOT rush to upgrade. Wait and see what others have to say. Check the DPReview forums.

Sony a7 II: Updated The Firmware From 3.30 to 4.0.

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

I have had the Sony a7 II for exactly a month and this was my 2nd firmware update!

I am NOT used to updating camera firmware that often. But, to be fair, for reasons that nobody seems to be able to explain, my a7 II, with zero shutter actuations, came with downlevel firmware, i.e., version 3.10 which had been released in November 2016, 6 months prior to me ordering the camera.

Updating to 4.0 was a breeze. Updater worked, flawlessly, first time around. Took about 14 minutes from my reckoning, but I wasn’t keeping careful track. It was pretty quick and the progress bar was moving along nicely.

Took about 80 pictures following the update. Didn’t notice anything awry.

This is what 4.0, released just a few days ago, viz. June 8, 2017, is supposed to do:

Sony a6500: Updating The Firmware From v1.01 To v.1.02.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Successful update of my Sony a6500 to 1.02 from 1.01.

The Sony a6500, though it has only been available as of November 29, 2016, is already at v1.02 of the firmware, 1.02 having been rushed out in early March to fix a rather nasty ‘dead camera’ scenario.

Version 1.01 was released on January 25, 2017 — just 57-days into its product life. Makes you think.

Version 1.02 was released 41 days later.

At this rate 1.03 should be out soon!

To be fair, the updating to 1.02 was easy, painless and quite quick. I didn’t time it, but I think it only took about 6 minutes. I could be wrong since I was not paying attention and was doing other things.

What I wanted to share with you was that updating to 1.02 was NOT an hassle.

Didn’t notice any changes after I did, BUT I have yet to run into any unexpected snags with this camera.

Updated The Firmware On My New Full-Frame Sony a7 II From 3.10 To 3.30.

Sony’s ‘Updater’ utility for Sony a7s — running on Windows 7.

Click image to access Forum post I started at DPReview.com

Firmware version 3.30 for Sony a7 II (i.e., ILCE7M2) was release on November 18, 2016.

Since I ordered my Sony a7 II from Cameta Camera (via Amazon) on May 11, 2017, I had just assumed that it would be at 3.30.

It was NOT!

It was at 3.10. There were ZERO (‘0’) shutter actuations and the camera does look new. So, I am hoping that this is STILL a brand new camera. IF SO, this does not make sense.

I have e-mailed both Cameta Camera and Sony seeking an explanation.

******

I was NOT happy being 2 version down on the Firmware.

So after some Googling to make sure that 3.30 was NOT a total dud, I went ahead and started the upgrade process this morning using the Sony instructions and tool.

On Windows 7 (64-bit) had to download the Sony ‘updater’ TWICE. First download was somehow corrupted and would not run. Though the download finished, without issue, the downloaded file was 169MB — when it should have been 219MB.

Second download was fine, and was 219MB.

After that everything went without a glitch.

Took 14- minutes — which is pretty damn close to the 15-minute Sony tells you.

So, I am happy with that. Not sure I notice any differences. That AF might be a tad faster might just be wishful thinking on my part.

The Beginning Of The END Of South African Apartheid Happened This Day, Just 25-Years Ago — March 17, 1992.

WOW! Just 25 years ago.

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then.

25 years.

Nelson Mandela had been released from prison 2 years earlier, 11 February 1990. I remember it well. Watched it LIVE, on TV, and CRIED!

MF Global Holdings settlement

A friendly heads up if you are or were a MF Global Holding investor — who got burned. There has been a $64.5 million settlement and ‘proof of claim’ and ‘release’ documents have been sent out, to those ‘on record’ — and these are due back by December 3, 2015.

IF you think you qualify and have NOT received the forms, which arrived c. August, you should contact: www.mfglobalsecuritiesclassaction.com

I have the forms BUT still haven’t got around to filling them. I should do that today. Mine shouldn’t be hard to complete.

I bought MF Global JUST for this type of settlement! SMILE. I paid 20 cents a share. So, YES, I could still end up losing money but it was worth the gamble. I did good (SMILE) with Bear Stearns. I bought some shares, the morning that they went belly-up, for $2.00. That was one heck of an investment.

I still think that Jon Corzine should go to jail but that will never happen.

Well, I hope this helps.

As you can clearly see from the above images I now have, without doubt, the new Roku ‘My Feed’ feature. That is good. I just noticed it today. I took it for a drive and it works.

Here is the strange thing. My software version and build has NOT changed. Check the picture (above) and what I wrote in this April 8, 2015 post. Version 6.2 Build 3332. You can’t see it in the picture BUT it also say, to the left, that the software was last updated April 6, 2015.

STRANGE.

So, maybe it was a ‘My Feed’ ACTIVATION at the Roku ‘Mothership’ with the same software.

Just letting you know.

So YOU too should now have ‘My Feed’.

Check the software version.

That is all I can help. I don’t want to bother them and bust their chops as to how it suddenly became available without a software upgrade. I suspect that it was ALWAYS in Build 3332 BUT needed to be activated.

Are we cool?

myfeedrokudsfsfYes, there was a new software update for the Roku 3 on April 6, 2015 — the day they announced Search, Voice Search and “My Feed” on the Roku 2 and Roku 3. That update was Version 6.2 Build 3332.

Though released on the same day as the announcement THIS update does NOT have voice search and “My Feed” for existing Rokus. The text Search, however, is there and works. Works well, though I still can’t get used to not having a ‘search’ within the “Streaming Channel” store. Yes, the search searches the ‘channel’ store BUT you have to exit the store to get to search. Not right. Very strange.

Voice search and “My Feed” right now are only available on Roku 2s and Roku 3 that shipped as of April 6, 2015. Got that?

The post April 6 models are: Roku 2 (4210R) and Roku 3 (4230R). [I have a Roku 4200X].

Another update is scheduled to enable these two features of existing Rokus.

Got this from the horse’s mouth no less. Hope it helps.

So be careful when reading some of the online posts talking about these new features. Existing customers don’t have them as yet.

This gets me worried about the Roku 4. Seems strange to refresh the Roku 2 & 3 if a Roku 4 is in the wings. My druthers is that it might have got pushed back into late Summer or early Fall.
