New Hampshire: How Long Before Permanent Plastic Driver’s License Arrives (To Replace Paper) — 2017

by Anura Guruge

In my case: 24-days.

Thursday, July 12, 2017 to Saturday, August 5, 2017.

Went to the main Concord DMV office around 3pm on Thursday, July 12, 2017.

Was issued paper license valid for 60-days, i.e., until September 10, 2017.

Plastic, READ ID, license arrives, much to my relief, on Saturday, August 5, 2017.

3 weeks 3 days = 24 days.

This came with the license (and another letter about renewal in 5-years). Click to ENLARGE and read. Interesting stuff about ‘Read ID’ and the validity of non-Real ID licenses for federal purposes (read TSA) till October 2020.

I did request a ‘Read ID’ license and mine does have a STAR on it — top right. Seems rather incongruous that this is how Real-ID is designated. There is, however, a lot of encoded ‘barcode’ information at the back of the card. I suspect that police and other agencies will read the license with a scanner and get access to all the back-end data.

24-days is NOT bad. Pretty good, if anything.

In mid-2015 we noticed 28 days.

It was 20-days in 2012. So, not bad.

Hope this helps.

How Long To Renew A ‘Green Card’ (I-551) In 2016 — 2017? About 5.8 Months.

by Anura Guruge

greencard

Got my new Green Card, valid till 1/19/2027. I was relieved and happy.

It took 177 days from online application for renewal (along with the (now) $450 processing fee). 5 months and 24 days. Not bad. Just short of six months.

I had applied for renewal on August 1, 2016. I had meant to apply two weeks earlier. My 2007 Green Card was set to expire on 1/12/2017. You can’t apply for renewal more than 6 months ahead. I had ‘lost’ 2-weeks and essentially applied 5.5 months prior to expiration.

Within 10-days I had a letter with my fingerprinting appointment — on August 26, 2016. So that wasn’t bad. 25 days into the application.

I had my fingerprinting done in Manchester, New Hampshire. A new facility (closer to Bedford) than the one that I had visited 10 years ago. Very nice. Very slick. Very friendly. It was a pleasure. The lady who did all the ‘biometrics’ stuck a neon, hightech sticker on my existing Green Card and told me that it was now valid until May 26, 2017. 9 months out! I was kind of shocked. I asked her whether it could take that long. She smiled and said that sometimes it does and that they just give themselves leeway. I was hoping it would not take that long.

It did NOT. I am impressed and happy. Very smooth and slick process. It even came with USPS tracking — though the envelope was very innocuous. I am happy and proud about the tracking. That was my suggestion from 10-years ago and I had been assured that they would look into that. They had. IMPRESSIVE.

So, caveats as to how long it might take. So mine took 5 months, 3 weeks and one day.

But:

  1. I have had a Green Card for 30-years, and as such they know me quite well. Yes, since August 1986.
  2. I tend to stay in one place for relatively long periods and had been at this house for over 9 years when I applied in August. That minimizes the searches they have to do.
    ….
  3. I do not have a criminal record! That, I am sure, helps because I do know that they run some elaborate fingerprint searches.

So, that is as much as I can tell you. Hope that helps. 6 months, as a rule of thumb, sounds good.

The new card is AMAZING. High tech beyond imagination. Wow. No, I am not going to post an image of it. {SMILE}

P.S., They are concerned about it being read wirelessly! Will have to see what that is all about.

This really is a sad and classic case of the ‘known devil‘ syndrome — as I also pointed out last year. I have been with Avast for a very, very long time. Last year I did quite a bit of research to see if i should switch and in the end ended up keeping them because they were MY ‘known devil‘. And for that I got instant grief.

This year I just did not have the time to do any research on alternatives and I will not switch unless I do my own research and due diligence. So I waited until I had just 24 hours left on my subscription before I renewed because in the past Avast has not tagged on the renewal to the days remaining on the prior subscription. Well I wasn’t doing to lose any days I had already paid for, so I waited till the 11th hour. Avast, shamefully, was VERY OBNOXIOUS about it. For weeks it had been sending me messages and plastering my screen with Popups demanding that I renew. On Tuesday morning, with still 24 hours remaining I got a totally UNETHICAL and probably illegal popup telling me that my protection has been DISABLED — though I am savvy enough to know, from looking at my task tray icon, that this was a bare faced lie.

I wish Avast wasn’t so obnoxious. Ages ago they used to be a really nice company. Now they are constantly in your face and I know that they monitor everything I do on my PC. I wish they were not so obtrusive. But yet again it is the ‘known devil‘ syndrome. At least with Avast, having had them for so long, I have a rough idea as to what they are up to. I can even tell from the sound my hard drive makes when they are updating their definitions.

My recommendation with Avast, as ever, is TURN OFF everything other than the most basic. See above.

Well I will try to keep you posted. All the best.

clarksonflk19821a

From my all time favorite newspaper in the whole world, the U.K. “Daily Mail”. Click to access original at the “Daily Mail”.

The media, the British public (that cares) and the ever-excited Argentinians are ALL losing sight of one very significant fact!

Bloody Jeremy Clarkson,
provocative and doltish in equal measures,

put the ‘982 FKL’ plate on a FRIGGING Porsche!

Clarkson is taking the micky out of us patriotic Brits too!

article-2631959-1DF6920900000578-313_634x917

Yes that is indeed Clarkson before the birth of his 4th child. Of course it is from the “Daily Mail’. Click to access original and read about the childbirth.

Get it? He is promoting OUR GLORIOUS VICTORY in the 1982 Falklands War using a German bloody car.

Give me a break.

I have never been a fan of Jeremy ‘bloody’ Clarkson. Though I will admit that he is clever and articulate he aggravates me intensely. While I am noted for my irreverent humor — I have bounds. I respect history’s greats, property and my country. We just watched a ‘Top Gear’ program (from 2013 I think) where he makes fun of Dr. Livingston and the source of the Nile. That does not sit well with me. But it is his wanton will to destroy cars and other property (e.g., grand pianos) that really irks me. I believe that Clarkson cheapens the BBC and what we stand for as a nation. Though the kids and Deanna like ‘Top Gear’ I only record it for them. I would be happy never to have to see its interminable drivel. This is why I started recording “Fast N’ Loud“. Though they too like to destroy cars they don’t do it on every show. I also can’t abide Clarkson’s obsession with German bloody cars.

So, PLEASE lets get this into perspective.

IF ‘Top Gear’ wanted to commoerate and celebrate our MAGNIFICENT victory in the 1982 Falklands War they would have put that number plate ‘982 FKL’ on a Jaguar.

Get it.

Just ignore Clarkson.

I got the top e-mail yesterday — ENH kindly trying to renew me for 24 months at a 44% increase! Given that I had been here just a year ago I knew that I had to be on my guard. Last year, as documented here, they tried to renew me at 8.117 cents/kWh BUT immediately agreed to a 7.89 cent rate when I called them up.

There was no way in HELL that I was agreeing to 11.39 cents for 24 months when the CURRENT PSNH rate is 9.78 cent.

Be careful. Be very careful. ENH lied to me. Said that PSNH has sent out letters saying their rates are going up to 15 cents in December 2014. I called up PSNH and did some Web research. NOT SO.

Plus remember — you can go back to ENH or find another provider whenever.

So DO NOT get suckered in by ENH Power.

Do not renew IF their rate is above that of PSNH. Play the game. They are not doing you any favors.

You cannot trust any of this bunch. I am still smarting from getting burned by ‘Resident Power‘.

So another Public Service Message for you — having to do with ‘Public Service of New Hampshire’ (PSNH).

I had started to notice on Tuesday strange, inexplicable ‘lag times’ and ‘anomalies’ on the Amazon ‘server cloud’ (though not with Amazon per se), Yahoo (particularly Yahoo Finance), MarketWatch (which is a part of WSJ) to name the biggest and the ones where the ‘issues’ were most pronounced. It appeared, from where I sat, as if they were weathering a medium-scale ‘denial of service’ (DOS) attack. The servers weren’t down (and out) they were just struggling to keep pace.

I think what I have seen could be the TIP of the iceberg. This Shellshock could turn out to be HUGE — and have the potential to make the Internet grindingly slow.

What we also don’t know is how much damage has already been done.

This one is BIG. I would keep a very close eye on the Internet. In terms of privacy, financial data, e-mails, images etc. we are ALREADY screwed. ‘They’ have probably ‘scraped’ up trillions of bytes of data. Too late to worry about that. We are all screwed. Now lets just focus on keeping the Internet up.

So much for the up till NOW much vaunted security of Linux. What a relief that Windows has escaped this mortar attack though just at the client end. 90% of the servers we use run Unix or Linux.

You have been given a good heads up.

Avast Internet Security invisible, secure browsing

Click to access Avast description of this latest (annoying) feature.

For the last few days I have been getting these ADDITIONAL, very annoying notifications from (paid) Avast Internet Security (2014 …) telling me that Avast could make my Web browsing totally anonymous by making me invisible.

Of course I did NOT take up their intrusive offer.

Even a quick glance at the notification informs you that they provide this via a ‘Virtual Private Network’ (VPN). That means that you first have a VPN connection with an Avast server, somewhere East of the Iron Curtain, and then your browsing is done using that server as a proxy (or surrogate). Yes, it will work and it will work well. Yes, there will be a small performance hit. The VPN connection itself will be encrypted end-to-end, which has performance implications, and you have now added ANOTHER intermediate server into your Internet access path. I can live with all of that.

As I have always maintained antivirus programs like Avast are the epitome of legitimized Trojan Horses. They know and report back on EVERYTHING you do on your PC! You have no privacy. That I know and I accept as a fait accompli of contemporary PC culture. But to do all my browsing through an Avast server just seems tacky. Makes me cringe. It is really is letting ‘Little Brother’ watch EVERYTHING you do.

Also when it comes to my Internet habits I am like Pope John XXIII and his impromptu walks in the Vatican Gardens. I really don’t do anything scandalous and as such have nothing that I really want hidden. So my advice on using Avast’s invisible browsing. Unless you routinely do dastardly deeds on the Internet, that you don’t want folks to know, I would stay well clear of it. With the Avast option, Avast will know everything you do — and maybe even have a legal right to that information BECAUSE YOU explicitly or implicitly agreed to use THEIR server.

Avast did it AGAIN! They FORCED, no, COERCED, actually TRICKED, me into upgrading to a version of (paid) Avast Internet Security that I did NOT want to be at.

I knew that there was an Avast 2014.9.0.2013 for some months now — BUT had not updated this, my main PC, to it. Avast had not bugged me about it. I maybe got 1 notification quite a few weeks ago and that was it. I was cool. Things seemed OK plus I am not that worried about ‘protection’ on this PC since I am fairly careful and diligent as to where I surf from this machine.

I have the same Avast Internet Security, off the same 3 PC license, on my backup PC as well (which is on another network).

So here is the first funny thing.

I had received quite a few notifications on the backup machine asking me to upgrade! Not sure how or why? The same underlying Avast IS. So why more notifications on one rather than the other. Maybe there is a notification setting that is mismatched.

Well, I do like, especially when it comes to Avast, to try new versions for a couple of weeks on the backup. Make sense right? So I had updated that to 2014.9.0.2013 about a month ago. Seemed to work. But, I really don’t use the backup machine.

On Friday morning I got my second (as far as I can remember) update to 2014.9.0.2013 notification on this PC. I ignored it. Then that evening it started displaying the annoying ‘needs attention’ icon in my icon tray. That drives me nuts. It is like having the ‘check engine’ light on. I like this PC to be in good shape at all times.

On Saturday afternoon after my walk around Wolfeboro I did a few Googles to make sure that 2014.9.0.2013 was copacetic. It appeared to be. I powered on the backup and checked that it was indeed on ‘2014 — 2013’. IT WAS but there was a message saying that 2014.9.0.2016 was available. I was surprised. It had not been bugging me to upgrade. So I didn’t do anything on the backup.

I got back on this PC and told Avast to update the program ASSUMING it would update me first to ‘2013’ as it had told me on the notification.

NOT SO.

When they finished their hacking around, I was, to my distress, at 2014.9.0.2016. Damn Avast!

Luckily it appeared to work.

So yet again I had two different levels on my two PCs. Now the backup was down-level. That didn’t help me. So I updated that as well. So both machines are now at ‘2016’.

For weeks now, on both machines, I have been getting these annoying GrimeFighter notification.

As if I would EVER LET Avast do anything to my PC beyond what it already does.

Well with ‘2016’ you can disable GrimeFighter. See image above.

Per Avast’s own FORUM GrimeFighter is USELESS. Just another excuse for Avast to stick its stubby little fingers in other parts of your PC. Another thread on the Forum.

Disable.
