Rejoice! We Have Licked COVID. ‘Christmas Revels’ In Cambridge, MA, Will Happen In 2021!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. I got this in an e-mail from ‘Revels’ this morning.

This made me so, so, so HAPPY. Wow. Best news of 2021. Confirmation that life is going back to NORMAL. Rejoice!

Of all of the COVID-induced tribulations of 2020, the one that impacted I the MOST was not being able to go to ‘Christmas Revels’ in Cambridge. I was crushed. My Christmas/New Year are NOT complete without Revels — Revels in Cambridge. I moped about this for months!

I had been hoping, in private, that Revels will be back in December 2021. Appears that it will.

Wow. I am so, so, so HAPPY. Did I already say that. This is great. This is fabulous.

I have already openly lamented, multiple times, that NOT going to ‘Christmas Revels‘, in Cambridge, was the WORST COVID-related DEPRIVATION I suffered in 2020! Think about it. Not going to restaurants, not going to Acadia, not going to Boston — missing ‘Revels’. Moreover, as my 14-year old daughter, another HUGE ‘Revels’ fan (who has been to at least 11 Revels) will attest, I was worrying about it getting cancelled way back in March! That was how early I was thinking about Christmas ‘Revels’ — & that from a man notorious for refusing to plan too far ahead. We, i.e., she & I, had even agreed that we would go to the LAST show — going to last shows something we like doing.

So, getting this video was a consolation.

Needless to say, it is VERY GOOD. Brilliant. Nice to see some familiar faces & hear some voices we know so well.

A BIT put out to see folks seated in MY SEAT in the balcony! That is supposed to be where I am. SMILE.

Watch. Enjoy. Plan for December 2021.

NOT going to Christmas Revels this year (viz. 2020) has been the BIGGEST impact COVID-19 has had on my life!

I was worried that this would come to pass in May 2020 — & ALAS it did.

I checked it out. IT IS GOOD. Well worth the money to rent or even BUY.

We have to SUPPORT Revels. We need them back, LIVE, in 2021.

So, come on. Be a sport. It is Christmas.

It will cheer you UP. SMILE.

NO LIVE ‘Christmas Revels’ 2020 In Cambridge, MA — I Am Beyond Crushed, My WORST COVID Nightmare.

by Anura Guruge

My family will testify that I had been DREADING this — i.e., NO live Cambridge Revels — for MONTHS! I just had a horrible feeling. I am crushed. Feel cheated by COVID, feel lost. Yes, I fully appreciate that in the bigger scheme of things that this is but mere bagatelle, but it is something that I truly look forward to year-to-year.

Way back, maybe as early as April, I was going around saying: “I hope Christmas Revels will not get cancelled“. Just a few few ago, my 14-year old daughter, who also likes her Revels assured me that there was plenty of time for them to get the show on stage. I knew otherwise & it has proved to be the case. I am crushed.

Truth be told the COVID-19 pandemic did not impact me much. This was the biggest & bitterest blow.

I am a bit of recluse as the best of times. Other than my mandatory daily walks (including the mile at night) I can go 5-days without ever getting in a car to go anywhere (& I do have 5-cars). I am happy to be at home & write. Plus Teischan was already been homeschooled. So, there was no change there.

Yes, I do miss going out to eat. That is a big change. I probably used to eat out at least 4-times a month. Now I haven’t even done fast food or take out in 5-months. But, it hasn’t bothered me too much. I still eat & I can always afford to lose some weight.

Vacations was another change. Normally, at a minimum, we would have gone to Acadia for a few days at the end of June. But, we have been compensating for that with our weekly, day-trips. Plus, we have something planned for later.

But, Revels. Aahhhh!

I am crushed. Teischan & I had already planned to go to the LAST showing — which used to be our custom. Same with the circus. Go for the last performance (in town). Now nothing.

Virtual does NOT cut it with I.

I understand. It would have been near impossible to have pulled it off. But, I am, nonetheless, sad.

2020 will NOT feel right without Revels.

I will always blame COVID-19 for depriving us of Revels.

Wow. I guess it was inevitable. With all that has been going on, I had not thought of them in particular. Must be quite a few other shows too — not to mention Broadway.

I have, however, been worrying about Christmas ‘Revels’. My daughter keeps on reassuring me that it is a longs ways out!

Wow.

Poor ‘Cirque du Soleil‘. Who would have thought.

I am sure they will come roaring back. Hear that they already have some folks talking of a buyback.

We have seen 3 (if not 4 (or more)) of their shows.

‘Revels’ (Cambridge, MA), The Good Folks They Are, Send Out A ‘Summer Solstice’ Musical Greeting — Though They, Like I, Revel In The Winter Solstice.

by Anura Guruge

They are GOOD FOLK.

Definitely more charitable than I! I REFUSE to celebrate the Summer Solstice. I HATE the Summer Solstice. It depresses I NO END. Winter is coming. Days are getting shorter.

Yikes. I can’t wait for the Winter Solstice. Ahhhh! Revel.

This came as an e-mail from ‘Revels North‘ (New Hampshire & Vermont) this morning.

I was impressed, pleased & proud. Good on them. Bravo. Thanks.

Last week ‘Revels’ (Cambridge) proclaimed their support by sending out a musical video of children singing for peace.

This is why I am such a BIG fan & booster of ‘Revels’. Their heart is always in the right place & they know exactly what note to strike.

Thank YOU.

‘Blow The Man Down’ (2019) Amazon Movie — Decent Story, ‘Poorly’ Produced, ‘David Coffin’ Was A Waste.

by Anura Guruge

YouTube trailer.

With no cricket being played, anywhere in the world, I am kind of lost. So, I am forced to watch movies on Amazon during my TV time. Hence, this movie.

It is set in Maine and the description was fairly enticing. It was an ‘OK’ movie. It could have been better.

Having ‘David Coffin‘, THE MAN from Revels (Cambridge) was a treat & a kick. I did NOT know he was going to be in it, but I recognized him as soon as he appeared. Ironically, I am not sure why they had him in the movie! I could be very wrong BUT I am not sure he added anything. His sea shanties, all of which I was familiar with, were incongruous in this movie — in my opinion. They were loud and made the movie seem unnecessarily heavy-handed and dark.

That it was in Maine and that it revolved around lobstering was cute. Liked that.

Story was OK. Not great. Production was BAD. It could have been muck slicker and having David Coffin was a waste! Sorry.

2019 Christmas Revels (Cambridge, MA), ‘American Experience’ — The ‘Thank You’ Video From The Gang.

This year end ‘Thank You’ video (at Vimeo) is now becoming another Revels (Cambridge) tradition. A nice touch. A welcome year-end reminder, when the days are truly dark and damp, for those of us who were fortunate enough to attend a performance, as to the ever uplifting gaiety of a Revels. For those, alas, who could not attend, it gives you a quick glimpse of what Revels was all about.

We attended the December 19th show. The sixth, seventh or eighth  Revels we have attended at Cambridge. Overall, I have been to about 20 between Revels North & Cambridge.

2019 Revels, by definition, was good. They are all good. That goes without saying. It wasn’t the best. The backdrop was the 1930s Dust Bowl and as such it wasn’t as gay as if it was set in a Stately Home in Europe. SMILE. But, it was OK and that is what counts. We wouldn’t have missed it for the world. Already looking forward to 2020 Revels in Cambridge.

Enjoy this ‘Thank You’ video. It captures what it is all about.

Happy New Year 2020.
