Struggling IBM Should End-Game Mainframes & Milk Existing Revenue Stream For 10 Years!

Last week’s IBM results was the 21st consecutive quarter of declining revenue! That is plainer English is 5.25 years of declining revenues in a row! That is bloody stupid. And all of that since Gin-and-Tonic Ginni Rometty took over as Chairman. Forget political correctness, she has to go. But, that aside.

It is time to stop being sentimental and emotional about IBM mainframes — and this from one who loves IBM mainframes and made a living thanks to those big, blue iron. But, you have to be realistic. Mainframes, FINALLY, after 53-years are on their deathbed BUT will keep going, without any sustenance, for another 10-year, MINIMUM.

That is the beauty of the LEGACY business. The legacy will continue even once the ‘legacy-maker’ is dead.

Developing new mainframes and mainframe features is an extremely costly business. IBM should stop ALL mainframe development efforts forthwith.

IBM has a rich and very profitable revenue stream of mainframe leases, mainframe maintenance and mainframe software maintenance. That revenue will continue as long as IBM keeps the mainframe running — via just maintenance.

Remember when Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 7 etc. are end-gamed. But people, including I, keep on using those operating systems. Well, it is much better when it comes to mainframes.

IBM can end-game mainframes tomorrow and mainframes revenues will continue to pour in for at least 10 years. But, IBM can save many millions, maybe even a billion, on development costs.

So, mark my words.

While IBM’s results continue to confound and contract, Amazon and Google are riding high.

To hear Amazon described as a TECH GIANT cracks me up (and partly because I am an Amazon shareholder and as such have not been able to stop smiling all day).

Amazon’s market cap is now more than TWICE that of poor IBM.

Amazon is better positioned to truly exploit the AI magic of ‘Watson‘ than IBM.

Think about it. Amazon already uses some sophisticated AI to tell us, daily, as to what we should be buying next. Amazon with Watson will rule the World.

Amazon probably does NOT need IBM’s much vaunted, by increasingly long in the tooth, server technology. But it and Google should divi it up.

Don’t for a SECOND think that this is a strange suggestion and that pigs will fly before this will happen.

Remember, remember Wang and DEC from the 1980s. In 1984, Wang was 2nd to IBM in computer revenues. Today it is GONE. GONE. GONE.

DEC for so long was a GIANT, slightly dwarfed by IBM. Today is a buried, forgotten, somewhere inside HP!

So this is not off the charts.

Just remember who told you about this first — on Friday, October 23, 2015, a day when AMZN shares were up 6% on the DAY. SMILE.

Talk about irony.

This unprecedented, hard to imagine (let alone quantify) exponential explosion in data over the last 2 years, and IBM, in theory the BEST company to have profited from it given that it has servers, storage, software and services, saw its revenues decline — over that very same period.

This is not right. This reflects on management.

Not Just Netflix, All Of Us Will Be Impacted By Credit Card Insertion — Adding 30(+) Sec. Per Transaction.

Credit card chip enforcement (EMV).

Now that credit card chip enforcement (EMV) — i.e., insert vs. swipe — is in use have you noticed that it is taking 30 to 40 seconds LONGER for each transaction to be authorized. At least that has been my experience at Walmart — one of the FEW retailers, around here, that have moved to ‘insert’. Maybe that is just teething troubles during this first month. But then again it could be that the additional processing, which why we have a chip on the card in the first place, will always take longer — though possibly, with luck, not 30 to 40 seconds longer.

Unless we are travelling I don’t do too many credit card transactions a day (compared to others that work in a city or go shopping at Malls on a regular basis). But let’s say we, on average, do 4 credit card transactions a day. The extra 30 seconds would then translate to 2 minutes a day of WASTED time where we are hanging around, in front of a credit card machine, waiting to complete our transactions. That is a pretty amount of time — in my book. But let’s work this out. 2 minutes a day is 14 minutes a week. Now you have to admit that that is starting to get your attention.

1 WHOLE HOUR A Month!

1 whole hour.

That is 1/2 a Day each year.

A full day every 2 years.

Get the drift. This is NOT good. As some of you know I have a phobia about wasted time. Time is my greatest and most valuable possession. I really resent my time being wasted.

So a BIG heads up.

Check this INFOGRAPHIC about how much time we already spend inline — just on vacation. Credit card insertion will ADD to that!

Netflix balming credit card insertions for their DROP in U.S. revenues AMUSED ME — and I am a NFLX shareholder (and I own more than a couple).

Read between the lines.

This is what I think they are saying. There was a LOT of fraudulent credit card transactions on Netflix!

The chip-based cards are weeding out some of this FRAUD. That I think is the real cause.

Interesting slides. I thought YOU might enjoy seeing it. So the State component of our Property Taxes only account for 16.4%. Wow, Meals and Rooms tax. Nearly 12%. I guess that is how we tap into the tourist traffic. $98 million from Interest and Dividends tax. A quick back of a napkin calculation shows that that would mean that all of the TAX PAYING residents of NH make about $1.2 Billion/year from Interest and Dividend. That seems a tad on the light side. Maybe I am wrong on that. Maybe that is a lot. I will have to ask around. I am, however, so relieved to realize that I am not the only one paying it.

Interesting stuff. Food for thought, maybe matter for nightmares.

So What Is The Story Here With The 10-4 Vote For Belknap County Medicare Rehab?

BelknapVotestory1

BelknapVotestory2

I saw and quickly skimmed through the story in yesterday’s ‘Laconia Daily Sun’. Kind of made sense to me. I didn’t stop to tally the votes.

Then I saw the ‘Repeat 4th Grade‘ letter this morning. Kind of cracked me up and also got me thinking whether that would be 4th Grade with or without the ‘Common Core Curriculum‘.

I have no axe to grind on this. I do actually see both sides to the ongoing County budget war. Yes, I do NOT want the County portion of my Property Tax bill to go up ‘9%’ (or whatever). That is a given. My tax bill is high enough already — thanks. So, I am totally behind any and all efforts to keep the tax increase of my bill under control.

But, I also understand that the County has obligations that we have to pay for, whether we like it or not, because that is how things work. As ever I would like some meaningful COMPROMISE. So that is where I stand.

This Medicare reimbursement ‘issue’, at least at first sight, and as reported in the paper, seems innocuous to me — and today’s letter appears to echo that.

Plus I just, as is my wont, did some sums. There were 14 State Reps present for the vote — with 4 AWOL. Of that, reading between the lines, 9 were Republicans, 5 were Democrats.

So in the 10-4 vote, 5 Republicans joined the Democrats to make the 10 votes. So, 5 Republicans voted FOR, and 4 Republicans voted against. I find that very odd. That is my concern.

Why did the 4 that vote against, do so? What did they fear that the the other Republicans present, did not.

I am curios.

Though he is a Republican, I have always found that Ray Burton, our NH Executive Councilor, invariably has a sound, common sense approach to what is good for the people of the State. I have to say that I would concur wholeheartedly with what Ray set forth in the above letter — just adding that the NH ‘Department of Revenue Administration‘ is another alternative.

I have never understood the opposition to casinos in NH. I think it will be wonderful: create jobs, generate MUCH NEEDED revenue and provide us with another in state destination.

I have never understood this argument about having to protect people from themselves — when we permit guns, smoking, alcohol, prescription drugs and newspaper editors driving at 90 mph. It seems so ironic in the ‘Live Free or Die‘ state, though did YOU know that Alton has a total ban on fireworks?

Yes, I find it amazing that this country actually enacted prohibition. Wow. Well trying to ban casinos for social good is in that same sorry boat. As Ray quite correctly points out NH permits, if not ENCOURAGES, gambling in the form of the Lottery. Just double standards and hypocrisy.

Yes, I know that at least in ultra-rich, Alton, I am the only one impacted by the increase in property tax. Hopefully there are others in less wealthy towns in NH who share my concern as to ever increasing property taxes.

Please take some time to think about this. Ray, at the end of his letter, encourages you to contact him. I know that he will help. He takes his job very seriously. So, please lets try to make casinos a reality in NH so that we can crawl out of the eternal income deficit hole that plagues NH. Thank you.
