This, by any measure, was a defining moment in human history.

The first legal rights granted to commoners.

This day should be noted and you should give thanks. It was the start of democracy as we know it today.

I have been to the site of the signing, at Runnymede. It sure makes you think.

So, take a moment today and reflect. A staggering 802 years ago.

I have my hands full keeping tabs of the pope and the Catholic Church. So I pay scant, if any, attention to what happens in the U.S. Episcopal Church. But when I saw this, in the U.K. “Daily Mail”, which I read, religiously, online, every morning, before getting out of bed, I knew I should share it with you.

The Skybox TV next to the DirecTV Genie. It is pretty small. The tall box directly below that is the DirecTV Wi-Fi ‘modem’ and next to that is my 2nd DVD/VCR player. On the shelf above is a Philips DVD player/Sound Bar. The 47″ Philips TV is above all of this.

It was GREAT! It made my day.

To be able to see all my West Indian and Indian ‘buddies’ in action again, FULL-SCREEN on my 47″ TV, in near HD quality, with none of the jerkiness associated with streaming video.

This was a delight. I was so happy.

The picture quality is sure better than what I was getting with DISH.

So it is indeed possible to get ‘TEN Cricket‘ on your TV independent of ESPN 3. That is real good news for us in the U.S.

I was using the Skybox TV device kindly provided to me by ZEE TV USA.

It is a little box that connects to your TV using HDMI and gets its content over the Internet using Wi-Fi. It is extremely easy to setup. Just two cables: power and HDMI. Then just type in your Wi-Fi network password. Bingo. Bob is your uncle. I am currently getting about 25 International channels — one of them TEN Cricket.

I can’t rhapsodize enough about the quality. I am always skeptical about video quality with streaming. The quality with SkyBox TV is beyond acceptable. As good, if not better, that what I got with DISH. No ghosting. No delay. No jitter. Just like broadcast TV.

I got to watch the 60 minute highlight package of the 2nd West Indies Tri-Nation Series played on June 30, 2013 between the West Indies and India. It was a good, tense match with some great hitting and some good wickets.

Johnson Charles played an innings of a lifetime. At the start he made Chris Gayle look pedestrian. His first 20 runs were all in boundaries. In the end he hit four sixes and eight fours. Though he perished, unnecessarily at 97, it was an innings of a lifetime. Reminded me of Collis Kings, unforgettable 86 (off 149) at the 1979 World Cup Final with Viv. I was THERE. I still remember the electricity of that innings and most of all Viv applauding Collis when he was finally out. Viv made a century but it was Collis’ that won the match. Johnson Charles’ innings was as worthy as that — and yes the West Indies won by 1 wicket with 2.2 overs to spare. Chris Gayle disappointed again. Of course I love Chris when he is firing on all cylinders, but as I have said before I have major doubts about his technique. And yet again in this match it was his technical ineptitude that let him down. That is why Dhoni has an average over 50 and Gayle has an average below 40. Ditto for Pollard and Samuels and possibly even Sammy. But it was a real fun match. So glad I got to watch it.

I will write more about this Skybox TV as I spend more time with it.

Right now, I am so happy to be able to watch TEN Cricket on my TV in the U.S.

Thank YOU ZEE TV USA.

Yesterday afternoon, around 4:15, the phone ran. It was a Akhilesh Gupta, the Director of Content Distribution for Asia TV USA — the ZEE Network affiliate in the U.S., based out of Manhattan. TEN Cricket is owned by ZEE.

Mr. Gupta had seen my rant about us in the U.S. losing TEN Cricket (other than for the short, online ‘clips’ on ESPN 3).

Mr. Gupta and I had an extremely pleasant and very productive conversation. I was very impressed, He was very forthright and gave me a lot of information — much of it which I will not share because it was of a sensitive nature.

I explained to Mr. Gupta the pain that us U.S. cricket fans are feeling. He understood. But, I think I managed to get through to him that ESPN 3 is not the answer to our needs.

The bottom line, as some of us had already deduced, is basic economics. Obtaining rights to major sporting events is not cheap. Networks have to recoup that money — as NBC clearly demonstrates every 2 years with the Olympics.

The issue in the U.S. is STILL the lack of adequate demand for PAID subscription.

It is a story that I am so familiar with and suffer in my own right. The Internet coupled with piracy (from Asia) is undermining so many ventures. It was like music and Napster.

Though we in the U.S. have a burgeoning population of cricket lovers many are unwilling or UNABLE to pay for it. I know that first hand. I don’t know many Sri Lankans in the U.S. or Canada. But, the few I know never subscribed to Willow or TEN. They watched cricket, for FREE, on the Internet. That is the problem. Many, and I know the same is true with Indians, have to be ‘careful’ with their expenditures because they send money back home. Kind of money. If you recall the people who advertised the MOST on cricket channels in the U.S. were the likes of XOOM.come, i.e., those that transfer money from the U.S./U.K. to India! So understandably the folks living in the U.S., to use a lovely expression from N.H., are ‘close to their dollar‘. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. IF we want something better than cricket on ESPN 3 we have to pay the piper. Simple as that.

According to Mr. Gupta, ZEE in the U.S. is exploring offering an ‘Over-the-Top’ (OTT) set-top, Internet powered solution. I think it might be this IPTV solution I talked about on June 15, 2013. Mr. Gupta is trying to see if he can get me an OTT box to try out. IF SO, I will, of course, keep all of you posted on my experience. IF it is a viable solution we will have to PULL TOGETHER to make that box a success in the U.S. So the first step is to try and get my hands on one.

I am in touch with Mr. Gupta by e-mail. I also have his phone number. This is good. Finally, WE, i.e., us cricket fans in the U.S., have a credible contact at ZEE.

I will keep you all posted. Thank Mr. Gupta. He did good.

Thank you Mr. Gupta.

I get to see on a daily basis the number of folks who are still upset that they lost TEN Cricket in the U.S.

This is the company that own TEN and is up to all the shenanigans.

Don’t even bother trying to contact them.

For a start, best of luck, trying to find somebody who can even speak broken, pidgen English. I have tried.

Bunch of Indian cowgirls — not manly enough to warrant being called cowboys
(and I apologize to our U.S. cowgirls in advance since they have class).

That is IT.

We, U.S. cricket lovers, remain screwed.

Many thanks to Satyajit who brought this to my attention this morning in the form of a comment.

damnfingESPN3

This is terrible.

I for one can’t get access to ESPN ‘bloody’ 3 on my PC because my Internet provider, TDS, is not on the authorized list.

I have as much chance getting TDS to sign up for ESPN 3 as I have of getting a pig to fly.

Plus, as I have said before I do not want to watch cricket on a PC.

I want proper broadcast TV.

Plus the little coverage I have seen from ESPN 3 is beyond garbage
and the commentators they have come across as having
no idea of cricket.

A sad day for US in the US.

I am sure this was another filthy lucre based deal by the
Indian Board of Control.

I am so mad. I am so disgusted.

With This Post I Claim ‘First Use Rights’ Of The Term ‘Infactrivs’.

Of course there is a reason. There is (and has always been) a method to my madness.

I just want ‘first use right’ if this ever, ever came up (not that it really can because among other things book titles cannot be copyrighted!)

I did a Google & BING search just to be sure.

Beauty of today’s blogging. A WordPress post which is timestamped and preserved (forever by WordPress) is such a wonderful and totally free way to establish a claim.

With luck all will become clear soon.

In the meantime try out the word. It really does roll off your tongue. Yes, ‘today’ (actually yesterday since it is now 1 am), it having been Deanna’s birthday, we went for a long walk on Old Orchard Beach, ME. This word came to my head while I was walking. The joys of befriending your brain.

As promised over the weekend I sent on e-mail and made three calls.

As I had said I had had a fair number of interactions with DISH’s V.P. of International Programming over what used to be an unpopulated electronic program guide; i.e., the description for each program just saying ‘Cricket’ rather than what the actual match was. So you folks really should thank me for the schedule that you now see on Willow. Though not perfect you can at least see the listings for the Tests, ODIs, T20s and IPLs. I went to the CEO of DISH with this. Unlike the CEO of TDS, the CEO of DISH (or his office to be fair) had the V.P. of International contact me.

The V.P.’s name was ‘Chris Ku….‘. Though he went at each other on e-mail, back-and-forth, he was a DECENT guy. And towards the end we had made the peace.

Then in September 2011 I lost my ‘Cricket Pack’ — though I was paying for it. I hit the roof. It transpired that I needed a SECOND DISH to get the ‘Cricket Pack’. Read about it here.

I again went to the CEO. This time I heard that he actually read my e-mail and made a few calls.

It was funny the next morning. I was getting calls from folks, all agitated. Suffice to say the 2nd Dish was installed within the day, and no cost.

I also had two gentleman give me their phone numbers and say, PLEASE call us next time before you e-mail the CEO. Nice.

I hadn’t chatted with Chris K. in months. Sent him an e-mail over the weekend. It bounced. He was gone.

This morning I called up one of those numbers. An Indian gentleman called ‘Amir‘. He had left Dish too. Confirmed that Chris had indeed left. He said that quite a few folks had left.

OK. These are the folks that got the first Cricket Pack.

V.P.’s of large corporations like DISH do not leave just for the heck of it.

So there must have been issues.

Bottom line I am without contacts at DISH. Yes, I still know how to contact the CEO. But, doesn’t seem worth it. I am probably leaving DISH anyway.

So this is just a FYI. Also a chance to again stress the difference between Dish (and GoDaddy) and TDS.

Given that I do NOT follow the IPL I was not aware that we were AGAIN embroiled in yet another cricket match fixing uproar! This beyond the pale.

I happened to visit BBC yesterday to see what they had on THE Queen’s 60th when I saw the above article. I was shocked and angry.

Some of you, devoid of cynicism and possible exposure to corporate high-finance, may jump up and down when I say that this match fixing COULD in the end have repercussions on Willow and TEN Cricket. The underlying connection is MONEY.

Cricket floats on a huge sea of money. The TV companies that own the rights to cricket, of course, have a lot to do with this money. Even if they are in NO WAY involved with the match fixing all this money is interconnected.  So, I think there might be repercussions — and by that I only mean possible lack of match coverage because contracts get pulled or the money supply dries up.

What has happened with TEN Cricket and the U.S., i.e., DISH and DirecTV, has all to do with money. They want more money. I can now see Willow and TEN asking for even MORE money. So all of this is not good.

Check the links at the bottom of the BBC article above.

Stay tuned. I am going call DISH in a couple of hours. [+3 time difference].

DISH Network & DirecTV Might Merge By Year End! So, A Heads Up. Don’t Switch Without Factoring That In.

In terms of cricket channels, right at this moment, there is no difference between Dish and DirecTV. Both are only offering Willow. I haven’t checked in the last 4 hours, but I suspect that Dish will probably give you Willow for $14.95. I cancelled my entire ‘Cricket Pack’ out of chagrin — thought they claim that they will still give me a $5/month discount in addition to the nice 3 month ‘bennie’ I got when I complained that NEO was not available.

Just want to make sure that none of you switch from one to another just in the hope of getting more cricket. Will not do you any good.

Yes, I am thinking of switching to DirecTV. I have been with Dish for 3 years. All my DVR equipment is old and I pay, even without the cricket, close to $100/month — and I don’t pay for any premium movie channels.

Kind of funny. Over the last 72 hours I have ‘chatted’ on line with DirecTV. Today, I get, through the mail, a special, ‘please sign up‘ offer. Yes, I am going to check it out.

The goal of this post however is just to give you all a heads up that down the road whether you are with Dish or DirecTV might be all moot if they merge.
