My Garmin MARQ Expedition on my wrist for the first time.

Saying Goodbye to my trusty Fenix 5 Plus. I will miss it!

The Twelve (12) Trackers I Have Had In The Last 2-Years

The Packing & Box

Yes, I know I am VERY fortunate (but I did a fair amount of writing to earn this). Basically, I did NOT have to pay for it. I traded in my 7-month old (and in IMMACULATE condition) Fenix 5 Plus and called upon ‘virtual $$$s‘ I had banked away for technical & writing services rendered over a 6-month period. Though I now rarely charge folks for my writing, I still get rewarded for it. This is the most visible example.

Impressive watch — but I am not sure whether I would have paid $1,750 for it! Given that I didn’t have to part with any money, at all, at all, it feels GREAT.

The Titanium body looks good and the Italian leather strap does look pretty good.

Now this is nowhere CLOSE to the most expensive watch I have owned. I wore a Rolex, with diamonds on its face, for 26-years. This watch is 1/4 the price of the Rolex.

Garmin has tried to make it upmarket. The box it comes in is HUGE and weights a ‘ton’. The dark gray plastic box (which feels metalish) is about the same size — and looks just like — a 6V lawn mower battery. Garmin is trying to compete with the packaging of high end watches and I am not sure whether they truly succeeded. 15-years ago, I sold my EMPTY Rolex box, since I had no use for it, on eBay for $98! Doubt whether I could get $22 for the empty MARQ box.

Though the straps are 22mm Quick-Fit the black plastic strap they include in the box has ‘larger’ (nicer) wrap-around ends over the Quick-Fit mechanism.

All the screens have been jazzed up and are much more appealing though it is still the same old TIRED display from the original Fenix 5. That is definitely a negative.

It has this ‘Body Battery’ feature, oxygen saturation and fall-detection. I haven’t worn it for long enough to determine if the ‘Body Battery’ or oxygen saturation is for I. For an old guy my oxygen saturation, at 96%+, is adequate.

So, this is my first cut review/impression.

I am GLAD I got it, the WAY I did.

I will keep you posted.

They Really Do Have ‘Rolex’ Watch Faces For The ‘Garmin Fenix 5’ For REAL — After My Joke Suggestion.

by Anura Guruge

My post, on this blog, from a few months ago.

Today, I got an e-mail from a Garmin ‘insider’ telling me that two Rolex watch faces are indeed available in the ‘Garmin Connect IQ store’.

I went looking. Sure enough.

Click to access the ‘Garmin Connect IQ’ store.

Yes, I downloaded them. They didn’t blow me away. Appears that you have to PAY for the ‘read’ face. I might do that when I get a Garmin Fenix 5 Plus.

I don’t think either is as good as the watch face I created, in minutes, on PowerPoint.

Maybe They Really Should Make A ‘Rolex’ Watch Face For The ‘Garmin Fenix 5’.

by Anura Guruge

It started this morning with this post, by a new member, on the ‘Garmin Connect Users‘ on Facebook.

I couldn’t resist.

Took me less than a minute to dash this off using PowerPoint and post it. But, I did provide some MAJOR clues.

Folks, quite understandably, liked it — though one person did not fully appreciate my humor or being pedantic that I had NOT used ‘photoshop‘, since I had used PowerPoint.

Got me me thinking.

Maybe Garmin and Rolex should partner. Create some watches under license. Charge BIG, BIG bucks.

Well I was having so much fun and it only takes me seconds — on PowerPoint. So, I did this too. Those who know me will appreciate the IRONY.

Bulova’s New ‘TurnStyle’ Watches, With The Rotating ‘Diamond’ Segments, Look Too Gaudy To Be Classy.

by Anura Guruge

As I have mentioned once or twice, I still get an occasional e-mail from Bulova because I once considered getting a CURV to replace my 26-old Rolex I gave to my son.

Since I have a partiality for nice watches I do look at their e-mails just to see what is happening in the market.

This new ‘TurnStyle’ collection did not impress me much. Way too gaudy to be classy. But, that is just my opinion.

Bulova GRAMMY Edition Watches A Tad Too ‘Clunky’ For My Taste — I Still Prefer The Timeless CURV.

The CURV

I still get an occasional e-mail from Bulova because I once considered getting a CURV to replace my 26-old Rolex I gave to my son.

But, that was before I got the Fitness Tracker bug and strapped a Garmin (Vivoactive HR then and now a Vivoactive 3) to my wrist — last June. Now the only fancy watch I will consider is the Samsung S3 Frontier that I did treat myself to at Christmas.

Bulova does makes nice watches and they are GOOD VALUE for money.

With GRAMMY Edition they are, of course, trying to make a statement — and if you like bold, brassy watches then one of these will work great for you. Just not my cup of tea.

I Have Graduated To Having Two Activity Trackers, Garmin Vivoactive 3 & Samsung S3 Frontier.

by Anura Guruge

I refused to wear the Rolex I had for 26-years, 24×7 even though I was told it would keep better time because it would always be at my body temperature.

But, since I got the Garmin Vivoactive HR in June 2017 I have got so used to having an activity tracker on my wrist that I feel LOST when I don’t have one. Well, when my new Vivoactive 3 died and I had to wait 8-days for a replacement I was very distraught.

Santa owed me a birthday present from way back in September. So, I called in my IOU. So, now I will have a backup if one of them fails, PLUS the Samsung makes a pretty decent dress watch.

Contrary to what Deanna says, I will NOT wear both at the same time to see if they record the same data. No way. This, for the picture, was the first and last time that they will grace my arm together. And no, I cannot wear a watch on my right wrist.

Garmin Vivoactive 3 In ‘Slate’ (a.k.a. ‘Gun-Metal’) Will Be Available October 20, 2017.

by Anura Guruge

A good video.
Worth watching IF you are considering a Garmin Vivoactive 3.

The stainless-steel nor the white appeals. As some of you know, I, having worn a diamond-studded Rolex for 30-years, am fond of nice looking watches. Wearing the Vivoactive HR has been rather ‘different’ at times.

That was ANOTHER motivating factor to consider upgrading to the Vivoactive 3. With a leather or metal mesh strap it could look halfway dressy WHEN I am dressed up.

So, I want the slate model.

Got it from an insider at Garmin itself today. Shipments of the slate model are slated for October 20, 2017. I had heard that on the rumor mill too.

The white model is already available at Best Buy — BUT not at Amazon.

I might have to buy the slate model directly from Garmin.

What I am going to do with the Vivoactive HR is SOLVED. Devanee is going to take it!

I Will Upgrade To A Garmin Vivoactive 3, From the Vivoactive HR, When It Starts Shipping.

The better heart-rate & ‘fitness’ monitoring is ideal for my needs.

As I pointed out in this post from just 2-days ago, the Garmin Vivoactive HR, which I bought on June 14, 2017, has CHANGED MY LIFE — for the better. I have not taken it off my wrist, from day 1, and I never thought I could go through life wearing anything on my wrist. I use it all the time and even keep my 10″ Android tablet close to my desk to make sure I have a connection!

Though it has NOT helped me lose any weight it sure has made me exercise MORE. I run further (33%), wearing more weights (83%) and do it FASTER. The later is the most amazing thing. Having ‘pace’ staring at you, as you run, just forces you to stretch your stride.

I check my heartrate …

The Vivoactive 3 has a BETTER (i.e., near constant monitoring) heartrate monitor. I would have upgraded just for that. But, it gets better. It has ‘fitness monitoring’ feature as well as one for ‘stress level’.

Plus it looks SLIGHTLY nicer than the Vivoactive HR. Wearing the Vivoactive HR is a bit strange for somebody who wore a diamond-studded Rolex for 26-years and has a collection of fancy looking watches.

I got the Vivoactive HR basically for FREE — using Best Buy reward points I earned when he bought (the accursed) Samsung Refrigerator. I will ‘trade it’ in for the Vivoactive 3. (But that is another post. {Smile})

I will keep you posted. Oh, I will get the black with the gunmetal bezel.

Van Heusen Wrist Watch.

by Anura Guruge

During the 1990s and the early part of the new millennium the only non-white shirts that I would wear were ‘Van Heusen’.

I was a virtual shirt rack for them. My white shirts, which had to be french-cuffed and monogrammed were ‘Stafford‘, but there was this visceral attraction to anything from ‘Van Heusen’ when it came to colored shirts. It kind of became a ‘joke’. If there was a colored shirt that caught my eye, whether at a store or on somebody’s back, the chances were 90% or so that it would be a ‘Van Heusen’.

So, when I saw this CHEAP ‘Van Heusen’ watch at ‘Marshalls’ the other day, I had to get it. So, it became another Christmas present. Now that I gave my diamond-studded Rolex away, I need cheap watches to grace my brown wrists. I haven’t worn it yet. But I think I could get used to it.

Oh, it won’t be the watch I wear all the time. I currently have about 6 (maybe slightly more) cheap watches. I wear different ones as it suits my mood. That is one of the GOOD things about not having the Rolex. I don’t feel that I have to wear one watch all the time.

KIA U.S.A. Again Displays Its Stupidity Post Lying About Mileage — Now It Won’t Let You Lease A Sedona Van.

I went to Team KIA, Concord, N.H., this afternoon to lease a Sedona van.

I had called them up on Saturday and told them I was coming.

When I get there they tell me that KIA U.S.
does not lease Sedonas.
You have to buy them outright.

That is STUPID.

Another example of KIA just not understanding what it takes to do business in the U.S.A.

They were STUPID to lie about their mileage … and then get caught.

By the way, they have yet to pay us the supposed rebate. So they lied about that too. Must be how they do business in Korea.

When I was a consultant I did a ton of work c. 1994 – 1995 for a Chicago leasing company. Father and son. Father had set up the company nearly 30 years ago. They were extremely successful, loaded and very generous. 95% of all of my business meeting with them were in very exclusive and expensive restaurants and clubs in and around Chicago. Until I started working for them I never realized that Hotels have secret, hidden away private clubs. You could stay at the hotel and never know that there was a huge club that you entered via a hidden door. Well, they taught me a lot about leasing. The father would say, repeatedly: ‘as long as something has a residual value that can be determine, you can lease it’. They leased Rolexs and sail boats — in addition to cars, trailers, planes and high-end IT equipment.

I remember that a few years ago Hyundai and  KIA didn’t do leasing at all.

Now that they do, to say that they don’t lease certain models is stupid.

Yes, I lease a KIA Sportage.

I like leasing. We don’t do that much milage. We don’t commute. We have two cars. No the Sportage we average 750 miles/month. So leasing is great for me. Hand it in at the end of 3 years and get a new car.

Bloody KIA. I sent them one of my polite e-mails.

Another way to interpret their reluctance to lease a Sedona is to assume that it is a piece of junk with NO RESIDUAL value after 3 years. That would make sense. If after 3 years it is worth nothing then leasing does not make sense to the lessee. So that must be it. The KIA Sedona is worthless after 3 years. That is what KIA is saying.

Now I will have to lease a van from Nissan or Chrysler.

I like Team KIA. They were 100% upfront when we leased the Sportage. That is why I was going to get another KIA. Well screw them.
