It was an unmitigated delight to see this cheery Food Truck pop-up on the corner of ‘our’ road & Route 28. Let me be precise, the corner of ‘Prospect Mountain Road‘ & Route 28, by the YMCA camp.

They have bought the large grey building on that corner. There used to be vehicles & truck bits in the parking lot — presumably for sale. I gather it used to a restaurant & bar way back. I have been here 13-years & the eatery business precedes I.

But, it has all changed for the good. Genevieve Michaud (from Barnstead) has bought the property & will open it up as a CAFE when the pandemic is ‘history’. That will be cool. To have a nice cafe at the end of our road — & I can already tell that it will be ‘nice’.

In the interim, Genevieve has a delightful Food Truck out there. This is all good. I am so pleased.

In marked contrast to the McDonald’s in Alton (as I pointed out (& they have ACKNOWLEDGED), the Food Truck is TOTALLY CONTACTLESS. I like that. That is how it should be.

The Food Truck (which will morph into the Cafe) is on one of my walking/running routes. So, I will be going by it, on foot, at least once a week. Will I stop & get a coffee? That is the question. That will disrupt my sacrosanct routine & discipline. Will she EVER be able to tempt me to have some of her ‘Apple Pie Bread Pudding‘? Yes, her name has ‘Eve‘ in it, BUT I know, for a fact, that I have better discipline than Adam! SMILE.

Well, now you know where the Food Truck is. You even have the menu. Contactless takeout. ALL GOOD.

I wish them all the best.

‘Dollar General’ in Barnstead, New Hampshire Is Now Open.

by Anura Guruge

Saturday morning, July 16, 2016, we set out for Barnstead [NH] to check out the farms that were supposedly participating in the “Barnstead Farming and Gardening Network” Open Day. That proved to be a bust. Noticed that the much talked about “Dollar General” (on Route 28) was open and looking very fresh and resplendent. So on the way back to Alton we stopped in. I think it is only the third “Dollar General” I have visited — and by far it was the nicest; it being very yellow, very bright and very new.

Good selection of stuff. Not “Walmart” but not bad for a local store. Lots of name brand products. Deanna was impressed with much of the pricing. So we can’t wait for the Alton “Dollar General” to open — possibly within the next month. That would be good.

Some of the stuff is expensive compared to “Walmart” or “Dollar Tree” — and I am a confirmed “Dollar Tree” addict. Given that we all take one a day, I buy lots of 14-tablet packets of generic Zyrtec Allergy Relief at “Dollar Tree” (at a $1/packet) or Walmart (at $0.84/packet). They had the SAME packets as “Dollar Tree” but for $4. Wow! That was a shocker.

Definitely good news for Barnstead residents. Happy for them. Can’t wait to see how the Alton store will work out. It will be closer to us than Hannaford.

I Am All In Favor Of Median Rumble Strips In New Hampshire Lakes If It Keeps Bikers From Riding The Middle.

by Anura Guruge

Centerline_Rumble_Strip

Three weeks ago they were scarce but suddenly they are everywhere — especially on Route 28 in and around Alton, New Hampshire. Centerline (i.e., median) in most places and both centerline and shoulders in other places.

I am glad — especially of the centerline rumble strips. I am so fed up of seeing bikers riding the centerline, often with their leg sticking further out, as if they own the damn road. It is dangerous for them and it is dangerous for us. The rumble strips should provide all of us with some separation. Let’s see. Bike week will be upon us soon. That will be the test.

Yes, the noise will be a distraction to those that live on the roads with rumble strips. Hopefully they will get used to it in time.

This was PRETTY AMAZING and AWESOME.

It will be open on Sunday, November 1, 2015. Go take a look.

It is at the corner of Route 28 and Hamwoods Road.
It is put on by Gary Sullivan.

Gary Sullivan, the Master Architect.

Gary has been doing haunted houses for 21 years. But this is his first year in Alton. He moved to Alton from Farmington. Deanna had seen him, over the week, setting it all up. She kept on saying we need to go to the first house on Hamwoods. It was not a house we had normally stopped at in previous years. So I was a bit confused. But then I understood. It was definitely the highlight of the night.

Next year it will be bigger, laid out into the adjoining forest, ADULTS ONLY and there will be a $5 charge. It is FREE this year.

Gary has a HUGE investments in the props that are displayed. I was amazed. Go see. Tell him that the Brown Guy sent you.

IF you want to reuse these pictures go ahead.

Wednesday, October 7, 2015.

I had to pick-up Teischan from school at 4pm — she was doing after-school yoga. She likes the XJS. She claims that it is her car given that Devanee owns the MGB. So she likes it if I come and pick her up in the XJS. I try to oblige. It was 68°F (20°C). I wore some fleece since in my old age I do feel the cold and these cars generate their own wind chill.

My goal is to keep the XJS topless as long as possible. Definitely into November. We took the MGB out, topless, on December 30, 2014. Not sure I would do that with the XJS.

Beautiful day. I took some pictures of foliage using Devanee’s old Samsung. These pictures were taken, in between those of the foliage, on Route 28, when I would park and walk around to get the angles I desired. I didn’t want to take my Lumix FZ1000 out. Still ‘babying it’ given that it is just over a week old.

Did WMUR (Again) Intentionally Mislead Folks About 4th Of July 2015 Weather Forecast In New Hampshire?

All week, leading up to the 2015 4th of July (long) weekend, the WMUR weather forecasters were tripping over themselves to proclaim who perfect it was going to be — hot with lots of sunshine BOTH Saturday (the 4th) and Sunday. Even at 9am Saturday morning they were claiming that it would be a perfect day — while I am looking out of the window seeing lots of clouds.

Well, at least in most parts of New Hampshire, we had a fair amount of clouds, rain (albeit it light) and COLD temperatures for most of Saturday afternoon. Yes, the rain, fortunately, ceased before most of the town firework shows BUT most people had to contend with a not very nice 4th of July afternoon.

Click to hear Judge’s apology, Sunday, July 5, 2015 IF you do NOT believe me.

This morning, on Sunday, Josh Judge, WMUR’s megastar weather forecaster, APOLOGIZED for getting the forecast SO, SO WRONG. Check it out here >>>>

Well, to be honest, I do NOT buy it. WMUR has done it before and I have mixed feelings about it.

As a Lifetime Granite State Ambassador (GSA) I have a vested interested in promoting tourism in New Hampshire. Yes, we need EVERY cent we can get from those from other States.

So I fully understand the motivation to mislead tourists about the weather on KEY holidays. I just worry that in time THEY will cotton on!

I have been watching this for years — with WMUR. To me it has become kind of a joke.

WMUR consistently, across all 4 SEASONS, will dupe folks into believing that we will have good weather during important holidays — whether it be the 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, New Year’s (for skiing) etc.

So I am just giving you a heads up. Just be leary about WMUR weather forecasts when it come to HOLIDAYS.

I took this picture, at Deanna’s behest, with my Canon T3i, at 10:45 pm, 4th of July, off Route 28, in Alton, New Hampshire (right off the ‘Circle’) coming back from the Wolfeboro concert & fireworks.

That is Merrymeeting River or Swamp. Not the lake. Lake is much further away in New Durham.

I think the yellowness had to do with the smoke from all of the 4th of July fireworks.

Another picture taken, roughly from the same place, in April 2015, Easter Sunday, when the river was partially frozen.

BIG, 4MB images to give you BEST detail.

Original June 9, 2015 post following a query on the Web.

I took these pictures on Sunday, June 14, 2015, around 4pm using my refurbished Canon Rebel T3i with the stock (rather unsatisfactory) Canon EFS 18 -55 mm lens it came with. I wish I had the Canon EFS 55 – 250 mm zoom that Deanna had got me for Christmas 2014. That would have given me some great pictures. I had not been planning to take any pictures of the camel. This was serendipitous. Deanna remembered my post and said “see if the camel is there”. It was and I did not have the zoom. This was on the way back from us going swimming in Lake Winnipesaukee. I had taken the 18 – 55mm on purpose. I only planned to take ‘swim’ pictures and the zoom is too narrow. Yes, I should have taken the camera bag. This will be a lesson. Or I can somehow raise the money to get the new Sony RX10 II that I am pinning over. That would have covered both my needs with one lens — though alas the 200mm lens on it might prove to be limiting in the long run.

Anywho. The Camel. It doesn’t appear to be on “Camp David” — on Route 28. It was in a pen NEXT DOOR. That is also a farm of sorts. They grow and sell flowers and vegetables — and sometimes litters of puppies. I have seen a Harrier there (like Braxton). It is a very attractive property. The camel was at the back of a barn on that property — or that is what it seemed. “Camp David”, which has two large structures, shown in the two bottom pictures (above), had some cattle (also shown).

I will try to do better the next time. Promise.

June 16, 2015 post with pictures.

Yes, I have seen it, briefly. I meant to stop and take a picture but that never worked out. Deanna has seen it too. I can’t be 100% sure whether it is a Dromedary (one-hump) or a Bactrian (two-hump). I was driving when I saw it. There might have been a Llama or something else with it.

Why am I talking about a camel in Alton, N.H.? It is, even for idiosyncratic Alton, a bit unusual to have an animal associated with hot, dry, waterless deserts in 10′ of snow Alton. But, the reason I am talking about it was that somebody was SEARCHING for it on the Web, and this blog tends to popup on Search Engines anytime “Alton, NH” is mentioned — as it should.

The Camel is at “Camp David” on Route 28, outside of Alton (towards the Barnstead side) — and maybe a mile or so from the turning to ‘Prospect Mountain High School‘ (PMHS).

“Camp David” is a kind of enigma as this post highlights. The amount of work that was done on it has abated.

But other than some unexpected animals — including cows — you don’t see much.

Yes, I do know a LITTLE about it. It is the work of an ex-Alton selectman — whose first name might have been “David“.

I also think it is meant to have a Biblical David association. The ‘camp’, I was initially led to believe, was going to ‘religious’ — and that is par for the course for this area in that we have LOTS of religious camps in the Lakes Region. So “Camp David”. Makes sense — plus the owner is a David …

The Bison theme, on the sign (up top) and on the gate, amuse and intrigue me. I would like to see Bison there. I am very partial to Bison meat. But Camels and Bisons are incongruous. I don’t think Bisons figure in the normal Bible (though I have to guess them must make an appearance in the “Book of Mormon” — which I have yet to look at).

I will, now there is an interest, stop and get some pictures. Deanna has lost the ‘fancy’ (and kind of expensive) Olympus ‘point-and-shoot’ I got her before we went to Arizona. That means I have to use my Canon T3i to get decent pictures. But stay tuned for the Camel in Alton, New Hampshire.
