Is NOT a dwarf planet. It is a possible dwarf planet CANDIDATE.
It is NOT the farthest known object in the solar system. 90377 Sedna goes out much, much further as do most of the non-periodic comets.
It is the farthest object OBSERVED in the Solar System. Both Sedna and Dwarf Planet Eris were closer to the sun in their long, elliptical orbits when they were discovered. That is key here. Farthest observed.
How can I be so sure about these things. Very simple. I wrote THE BOOK on Dwarf Planets!
So this is exciting, but we have to keep it in perspective.
It has now been over 10-years — YES, 10-years — since we have had a NEW dwarf planet. There is politics here and possibly even some second-thoughts and regrets, Maybe they were hasty in coming up with the classification ‘dwarf planet’. Minor planet and trans-Neptunian object (TNO) might have sufficed.
But, I will keep you posted.
