Poignant ‘Hymn’ To Combat COVID-19 ‘Isolation’ By Welsh Legend & Treasure, ‘Max Boyce’.

by Anura Guruge

I had an urge for some ‘Max Boyce‘ MAGIC tonight & went looking through YouTube.

Saw this. I had NOT heard of it & obviously NOT seen it.

It is blinking beautiful. And it talks about MY SWANSEA.

Please watch it. It will do YOU a power of good.

Max & I go back 50-years. I grew up on Max. And yes, as some of you know, next to cricket, rugby is my other sport.

For those of YOU (alas) who are not familiar with Max Boyce let me please share two of my favorites. Very different, but they show you what Max can be. Please check him out on YouTube. You will NOT regret it.

An England v Wales Showdown Is NOW Possible At The Rugby World Cup 2019 — WOW!

by Anura Guruge

Click to access my post from just 3-days ago.

That was a turn for the books. New Zealand trounced by England at a World Cup — this time in Rugby. New Zealand did NOT look like the team that I had seen in the previous matches.

What was that statistic I heard — New Zealand’s FIRST World Cup loss since 2007! First loss in 19 matches. England last won against them in 2012 (albeit not in a World Cup).

So, this was quite sensational. Quite the match. I watched the (above) highlights TWICE — just to make sure.

Wales go in as FAVORITES.

So, we have a good chance. Fingers crossed.

Who do I support: Wales FIRST, England second. SMILE. At my core I am Welsh. SMILE.

Wales v England Showdown Is Possible At The Rugby World Cup 2019, But Unlikely.

by Anura Guruge

For it to happen now, both England and Wales will have to win their respective semi-finals this weekend. That would mean a England v Wales final. That would be great for us the British, but, alas, I just don’t think it will happen.

Why? The New ZealandAll Blacks‘ — defending Champions from not just the last World Cup, but the one before that too.

They have been awesome. Just magical to watch. While England, obviously, has played well to get to the Semis, I just have a sneaking feeling that the All Blacks will outgun and outrun them come Saturday.

But, we can keep our fingers crossed.

Japan Has Made The 2019 Rugby World Cup Quarter Finals — But Many Of Their Players Are NOT Japanese!

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. From the world cup official site.

Yes, I fully understand and appreciate that a lot of countries have foreign players in the national sport sides. But, what surprises I is that the Japanese are SO, SO into racial purity and to put it bluntly are renowned for being racists — considering everyone who is not Japanese inferior! Thus, to I it seems the epitome of hypocrisy that Japan would employ foreigners to represent the country.

Just Google “japanese racism” to see what I mean.

One Memorable ‘Haka’ — Farewell To The New Zealand ‘All Blacks’ Rugby Team By Airline Staff.

by Anura Guruge

So this is the ‘Air New Zealand‘ staff doing a spirited haka to wish farewell to the ‘All Blacks‘ heading for the Rugby World Cup 2019.

Not often that you get to see women doing the haka and to I it makes this even more special.

Would appear that the whole team (probably upwards of 22) were not there — up front. From what I can see just 4, in orange vests, came as representatives. Not sure what the logistics were. But, you can see that there is genuine passion and affection on all sides.

Just for the record, this was 2015, when the ‘Air New Zealand’ staff did a welcome haka for the victorious ‘All Blacks’ after the 2015 World Cup.

Good News For BUSY Rugby Fans, 17-Minute Highlights Of 2019 World Cup Matches, In HD, Available On YouTube (FREE).

by Anura Guruge

Just a very partial listing from YouTube.com.

Given that NBC holds the U.S. broadcast right for the 2019 World Cup I did not expect to see much on YouTube.

I was pleasantly surprised. NBC, for a change, is being NICE. Yes, they are but 17-minute HIGHLIGHTs but it is in HD and appears to capture what is needed. Yes, it does leave you feeling a bit lost and empty at times, but it is better than nothing.

To be honest, I am quite cool with this. I do NOT have time to watch a full 90-100 minute game — not with my writing and also watching cricket! So, this suits I.

Yesterday, I watched two matches, back-to-back: New Zealand v South Africa & Fiji v Australia. They were both beyond excellent. Must watch. Honest. Some of the running. Will leave you breathless.

New Zealand Rugby Team ‘Haka’, At The 2019 Rugby World Cup, For The South Africans.

by Anura Guruge

The New Zealand, ‘All Blacks‘, rugby teams, over the years, are who made the ‘Haka‘ famous.

They, big, brawny and formidable are the ideal troop to do this.

This, at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, ongoing right now, is good. Can’t say it is classic, but it is good. This was the first ‘Haka’ of this World Cup. The New Zealand team will do a ‘Haka’ at the start of each game.

It is, actually, a TRIBUTE to their opponents! Not a challenge. It is honoring them before the battle commences. A very nice gesture. This ‘Haka’ was for the South Africans (in green).

Look at the size of one of the players who stands up and walks to the front. I used to play rugby and would have hated to come up against that guy. He is HUGE.

“The Professor And The Madman” (2019) Movie On “Amazon”: A ‘B-‘ For Effort, A ‘D’ For Veracity.

OK, I will admit upfront that I am not your typical audience for this movie — which is about how the classic ‘Oxford English Dictionary‘ came to be created.. For a start, one of the settings in this movie is my old school, Mill Hill (in London). Moreover, I have read THE book (by Simon Winchester on which the movie is based), know additional bits about the history of the Dictionary and furthermore adore ‘THE OXFORD’ and what it stands for. So, I was not going to be an easy customer to please — though I desperately wanted the movie to WOW I. Alas, it did NOT.

For a start, it misrepresented the history involving Mill Hill and the scene they show involving Mill Hill does NOT show anything close to what Mill Hill looks like! And that was how the movie started. So, I was not impressed. It would NOT have been difficult to have shot the scene at Mill Hill since the buildings, from the time, are still there. Plus, they show Dr. Murray’s son playing field hockey. Yes, we played hockey at Mill Hill but the school is more of a rugby and cricket school. So, that was part irritating. Then the movie gets the dates and facts WRONG! The Murrays did not move to Oxford as soon as he became Editor. The first five-years of the Dictionary were at Mill Hill. So, the movie misrepresents that.

Yes, it is NOT an easy story to tell and the ‘Madman’ (viz. Dr. William Chester Minor (who cuts off his penis)) was not as central as the movie makes him out to be. Yes, he contributed, much — but so did thousands of others. It is the typical conflict between a good book and a movie that tries to tells its story. In this case, as it happens so often, the movie falls short.

My recommendation: skip the movie, read the book!

I Am Finally Bionic.

Right now, for the first time in my life, aged 65, I am CRIPPLED!

Totally tore my main Quadriceps Tendon this morning. I slipped and fell while shoveling snow.

There was an almighty CRACK and my leg was at an unusual angle.

I, from all my dry-slope skiing in the U.K. and rugby am a veteran of dislocations. Thought I had dislocated my knee. But, it was more serious than that. I could not bend it or put much weight on it.

Eventually, with help from wife, went to the ER at ‘Frisbie Memorial Hospital‘ in Rochester, NH.

They initially suspected that I had broken my knee cap. Yes, they took X-rays. Knee cap was fine but something else was wrong.

So, off to a CAT Scan with contrast. They also checked my entire leg artery for possible damage. Artery was fine.

But, Quadriceps Tendon was totally separated from the knee. It was flapping around …

Yes, I need surgery and they were going to do it tomorrow! That was too FAST. I needed some time to recover and get my head sorted out.

But, I already met with the Orthopedic team! That was pretty impressive. 6-hours in ER and then being able to meet with the surgery-group the same day.

Getting surgery next week.

Will not be running for a few days — at least. Definitely no skiing in March.

Something that TOTALLY bummed me. Running is a major cause for this injury. You just can’t win.

Well, I will keep you posted.

I am OK. The morphine IV helped.

Smile.

Today Is ‘Michaelmas Day’ 2018 — Happy Michaelmas, Enjoy Your Goose.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michaelmas

Since I am not into angels this is really not my thing — though I am always happy to eat goose (even once, 40-years ago, in Thailand, eating swan thinking it was duck).

But, when I hear ‘Michaelmas’ it does bring back memories — now filtered by decades of time. As some of you know I had a very traditional British upbringing, including Public (i.e., Private, fee-paying) School and British Universities. At Mill Hill, in particular, ‘Michaelmas’ was always used to denote the Fall (i.e., Sept. to Dec.) term. I associate that with Rugby.

So, it crossed my mind that I should share with lovely, quite British tradition with some of you — as a de facto ambassador for the Brits.

Enjoy.

If you are into Angels this is YOUR DAY.

Wonder whether geese know of angels
